Prepare yourself to fall in love - with Baby Jazz!
Baby Jazz is about one year old. She arrived at Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) with a swollen face and extremely limited motion of her hip joints. The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals pulled her and immediately started consulting with our veterinary partners, including the wonderful people at Water4Dogs, to discuss her therapy and surgical options.
While the hematoma on her face subsided after being drained, we discovered that she had suffered old fractures to the ball portion of the ball and socket of the hip joint on both sides, requiring a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO). An FHO is a surgery that essentially removes the ball portion of the bone, with the leg(s) still being held in place by the muscles around the joint. We were assured that with the right amount of therapy and rest, the surgeries eventually would allow Baby Jazz to walk normally and without pain, so the Alliance (with the help of our partners) decided we were going to make it happen.
Despite receiving rescue discounts from both Water4Dogs and our partner veterinarian, Baby Jazz's surgeries, therapy, and boarding will cost the Alliance more than $5,000. UPDATE 12/31/12 - Baby Jazz's surgery was a few weeks ago. She's been on rest with slow walks, and ice applied to her hip after walks to reduce the pain and swelling. After two weeks, she began slowly walking on the underwater treadmill, and starting to use her leg in a more normal fashion.
