Oh I wish I would have done more songs with actions when my son was younger! Singing has not come naturally to me at all as a new mom! He's 18 months tho and it's getting easier.

My friends and some family members keep asking me if I checked with the doctors that 3 languages are not too much for a child. Everyone thinks thats its sthg to slow down his development:/ Sometimes they even say: you shouldstick to 1 language, he doesnt need more. Ohhhh its sooo frustrating how uneducated we are when it comes about 3 language families!

I watched some of your videos a few months ago, and just recently I found out I am pregnant. Both me and my fiancée are native portuguese speakers, but I am trilingual (portuguese and english fluently, advanced spanish), intermediate in french, and he is learning english. We have plans to move to Canada in around 2 years time, and I wanted my child to have english and french as a second language. But both would mainly fall on me until we move, especially because both our families speak only portuguese and where we live multilingual nannies are hard to find... our country is very monolingual in general. I would have to stick to english the first few years, right? At least until I get better at french. And get a lot of resources so the child has access to native English.

Hi, not really. You should use Portuguese as you main language. That's the most natural thing to do in your case. You can get material to start exposing your children to EN and FR but focus on Portuguese for now. Having a strong 1st language is crucial to building other language on top successfully. Check out these courses that will help you get on track with the language development of your children (www.multilingual.family/services)

Dear, I watched and subscribed to your RU-vid channel and also received emails from you.... Thank you I found you really excellent. I want to ask you a question and get your advice. My son is 10 months old... My husband and I are from Egypt... I speak Arabic as a mother tongue and I also speak English and German... We live in Hungary for the next two years and after that we will live in Germany or Egypt. We haven't decided yet.... My son goes to kindergarten, but I don't want him to learn Hungarian, because we will leave Hungary and there will be no point in learning it. ...Unfortunately, we can't change the nursery...At first I applied the OPOL curriculum so that I speak English, German and my husband Arabic, and then I changed this thing is that I made every day a different language in the exchange because my husband spends most of his time at work and he is a resource Arabic. For example, I did Saturday for Arabic, Sunday for German, Monday for English, and so on alternately.... After that I had to work, so my husband and I were always at work, and my son was in daycare. We spent most of the day working and very little time together....so I was afraid that my son wouldn't speak the mother tongue, which is Arabic, so I always spoke Arabic...but I thought of something, which is to work 5 days a week and 2 days off.. What do you think that the two days for the Arabic language and five days for the exchange between English and German ... I am confused? Because I'm trying not to settle on principle with my son, and I'm afraid he'll mix up languages and not speak well. I hope you will advise me. Also, I want to ask you.. Is it enough for me to talk to my son in the normal way I talk to anyone? For example let's eat... let's prepare food etc.... Will my son be able to talk or should I do it in a different way like pointing to and saying colours, objects? What are the sources of raising a child in the tenth month of his life? Regards Yasmina Rezk

Hi Rezk, I'm honestly not a fan of switching the language each day. Multilingual children need to develop at least one language at a normal pace. That means they need at least one strong language to build other languages on top of that knowledge. Focus in the first years mainly on your strongest language. Use the OSOL method for the other languages but only after your main language is well established. I really recommend you consider taking the mini-courses that I created (www.multilingual.family/services) exactly for cases like yours. You will learn tons, gain lots of clarity and feel reassured and empowered afterward. I've worked with thousands of multilingual parents and what I teach in the course is the essence of what really works when raising multilingual children. It's necessary to analyze your whole situation and family plans to choose the best methods to get the best results possible. If you wish more help, here is what I can offer: www.multilingual.family/services Kind regards, Andrea

A great resource. I need to work on giving positive reinforcement to my child when he speaks. One question, which I think you may have answered in another video: in OPOL are we supposed to pretend not to understand our child when he speaks in the majority language? I just tell him the word in the minority language
@MultilingualFamily
@MultilingualFamily Год назад
Thanks! I personally don't like the approach of "pretending not to understand". Just repeat and paraphrase the sentence in the minority language.
@sdoken

Will he still learn the language if i do not Make him repeat after me but just repeat it in the minority language myself? These days I make him repeat after me but i may not be able to do that when he speaks in longer sentences.

Hello I've been watching your videos Im about to give birth to my first child but still cannot decide what's the best plan to follow. I'm French, married to a German and for now living in Germany but I'm not fluent in German and speak English with my husband and the people around. I know I want to speak French with my son when Im alone with him, same for my husband, he'll speak German when alone with him, but what about our family times around the table or in the car, should we switch between the 3 languages depending on who talks to whom? Isn't that gonna be super confusing and tiring? or during the times in german speaking circles? Is my son gonna be all confused if I speak English to people who speak german to me 🙈

Hello Alexandra! Congratulations on your pregnancy. It is best if you stick to French at all times and your husband always to German, even at the dinner table, until your child has developed a strong bond to both of you in your languages. You can speak to your husband in EN, every time you address your baby, you switch to French and the same thing for your husband but in German. If you mix the languages, your child will also mix and eventually choose his/her strongest languages to communicate with you. If your goal is that your child also speaks French, then you need to stick to as much as possible for the coming years. I have courses were I show you step by step how to organize your multilingual family to reach your goals. If you have questions while you go through the course, we can also schedule a call. --> www.multilingual.family/services
