Kings and Generals animated documentary series on the history of Ancient World and Ancient Greece continues with the first video in the wars of the Diadochi - successors of Alexander of Macedon. Previously, we have covered Alexander's conquest of Persia ( • Alexander of Macedon -... ) and his campaign in India, as well as his reforms, plans and death ( • Alexander: Indian Camp... ). In the aftermath of his death, his generals - the Diadochi, started dividing his empire during the Council of Babylon and deciding who will rule the empire. Meleager's coup attempt failed and he was killed. To the west, the Greek city-states led by Athens rebelled against Antipater, leading to the Lamian War, while in Asia, Ptolemy famously stole Alexander's body, striking one of the first blow of the coming war ( • Lamian War - Greeks Re... ). This led to the First War of the Diadochi in which an alliance led by Perdiccas and Eumenes faced the alliance led by Antipater and Ptolemy at the battles of Camel's Rampart, Hellespont, Orkynia and Cretopolis in 321-319 BC, which Antipater and Ptolemy won, dividing the empire again during the Partition of Triparadeisos ( • First War of the Diado... ), which in turn led to the Second War of the Diadochi, the battles of Coprates river, Athens, Megalopolis, Gabiene and Paraitakene, the end of Eumenes, as well as Philip III Arrhidaeus and Olympias ( • Battles of Gabiene and... ). Initially, the winners were in accord, but at some point, new alliances formed with Antigonos on one side and Ptolemy and Seleucus on the other, leading to the Third Diadochi War and the battle of Gaza of 312 BC ( • Battle of Gaza 312 BC ... ). For Seleucus, this morphed into the Babylonian war, as he had to defend against Antigonus during the sieges of Babylon and the battle of 25 Abu.

@@lisboah true but look at the other wars with the greeks the roman had, like pyrrhus was defeated in 3 battles, Phillip V was beaten in 2 battles, and Perseus II was beaten solely at cynocephale. Its astounding the seleucids could field 3 armies to fight the romans. Also antiochus lost in Asia to the scipio Brothers so there isn't much shame in losing to some of rome's best.

And such thing has proven to be an invaluable asset during history. Look at the Roman Empire. Look at the French Revolution. Look at most Chinese dinasties. The moment you got a firm grasp of the capital, you could take the whole thing.

All in all Kassander gets the blame, but the other Diadochi were thinking of eventually eliminating the Argead line. Whether Antigonus, Seleukos, Ptolemy, or even Lysimachus had won the whole empire in another timeline, Alexander IV or Heracles would have been like the child emperors in China, served their purpose but now no longer necessary.

@@QuantumHistorian There's a pillar Seleukos has commissioned after the war that explained his point of view of the war. While parts of it were destroyed due to time and wars over that time, what historians have been able to decipher has been key to understanding the Babylonian War. Add to that the sparse Greek sources we have and speculations from modern historians and tacticians and you're able to get a more in depth picture than you'd expect.

How likely is it that Seleukos simply didn't get the memo about the peace between the Diadochi, because he was out campaigning to consolidate his power and the message never reached him or sth? And then when he never showed up for the meeting, they just assumed that he had made a statement by not attending, and that it was war. That is indeed correct; however Seleukos and Apama claimed she was Darius's daughter to gain political legitimacy in Persia and the broader region (as mentioned in the narration). It was part of a broader strategy; essentially what is outlined in the video in terms of buying out local support and using existing social networks present in Persia and Media from the Achaemenid period.

The map is a little inaccurate, Nikomedia wasn't founded until 264 BC (half a century after this timeline) and was actually called Astacus during this period. Also while it is true Byzantium existed during this period, Lysimachos founded his capital of Lysimachia ca. 309 BC which lay more west of Byzantium

The etymology of Babylon (5:38) is wrong, it's not Bab-Il (the gate of the god) but rather a contraction of Biet-Ba'al (the abode of Ba'al). The Lebanese city of Baalbek shares the same name but this time it's in the form of Ba'al-Biet (Ba'al's abode). Both cities are of course built around a huge shrine for Ba'al. BTW about 90% of ancient Babylonian texts refer to their god as Ba'al and yet for some reason the translations into English *change it* to Mardok which is not a name but a title: Holy Son. The word 'Mar' is used to this day in the region to refer to 'saints' (holy people), ask any Iraqi or Syrian Christian what they call St. Joseph and he'll answer Mar Yosef, while 'dok' means something like offspring.

Knowing the meaning of word is not enough you have to know the etymology and when it's used in literal sense and when in figurative sense. Anyway that's neither here nor there because Ba'al as a proper name for a god is well known and documented and is recorded in both the Hebrew bible and the Quran and the famous Carthaginian leader Hannibal name is actually Han-Ba'al-Brq or Servant of the Lord of Lightning en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baal#Etymology And as I said if you read the transliteration of Babylonian text they almost always say Ba'al and not Mardok. Some of it on the net if you google for it you'll find it.

interesting, no one tried to get allies among neighboring countries - Qidarites, Atropatine, Armenia. In Total War I would try to get those allies to secure the wings while I was dealing with the main enemy.

If the History Channel was still a compelling entity that made critically acclaimed history documentaries, they could make a great gamesmanship style of historical dramedy [drama-tragedy, not drama-comedy] about the Wars of the Diadochi that could rival Game of Thrones and Shogun. But alas, they are too focused on Ancient Aliens and the Curse of Oak Island. What God did I piss off to have to suffer through such miserable mismanagement of an IP. At least K&G always delivers. The Five Wars of the Diadochi was one of the first series I ever watched on this channel years ago. Glad to see it back in the limelight…Also, Seleucus should now be renamed Seleucus the Silver Fox for how crafty he was during the Babylonian War.
