Kings and Generals animated documentary series on the history of Ancient World and Ancient Greece continues with the first video in the wars of the Diadochi - successors of Alexander of Macedon. Previously, we have covered Alexander's conquest of Persia ( • Alexander of Macedon -... ) and his campaign in India, as well as his reforms, plans and death ( • Alexander: Indian Camp... ). In the aftermath of his death, his generals - the Diadochi, started dividing his empire during the Council of Babylon and deciding who will rule the empire. Meleager's coup attempt failed and he was killed. To the west, the Greek city-states led by Athens rebelled against Antipater, leading to the Lamian War, while in Asia, Ptolemy famously stole Alexander's body, striking one of the first blow of the coming war ( • Lamian War - Greeks Re... ). This led to the First War of the Diadochi in which an alliance led by Perdiccas and Eumenes faced the alliance led by Antipater and Ptolemy at the battles of Camel's Rampart, Hellespont, Orkynia and Cretopolis in 321-319 BC, which Antipater and Ptolemy won, dividing the empire again during the Partition of Triparadeisos.

Eumenes was a brilliant man known for his photographic memory. While besieged in close quarters in Nora he even devised a way to keep the horses in shape by engineering a pulley system to hoist them with ropes and making them run in air while held in place. Quite ingenious.

His nickname was Eumenes the sly known to Philip as one of the most cunning and strategic minds of the time period. He was looked down upon by many Macedonians because of his heritage and stature. @praiza1481
@praiza1481 Месяц назад
The neglect is pretty ancient, it goes back all the way to Augustus. By demonizing the Macedonian kings and by extension the whole Hellenistic Era, he proclaimed a new golden age for Rome, a golden age of democracy like Athens' hundred of years before. This was all propaganda to appease the Senate and the Plebeians of course, as Augustus' Rome was a Hellenistic kingdom in all but the name. Augustus was such a political monster that his propaganda went all the way to the 20th century! Go to any ''old-fashioned'' museum in Greece today, one whose collection hasn't been studied for the last 20 years, and you'll find the most egregious commentaries towards Hellenistic art, for not other reason than the period it belongs to. Fortunately, this is changing now. For the last two decades, the Hellenistic Era is finally being studied under an unbiased prism. Not to say there wasn't any good works before, I could cite a few German, French and Italian researchers who kept the interest for the period alive, though barely. But as far as I see it, the Hellenistic Era is more studied nowadays than the Classical Era, which is quite something.

The upcoming Eumenes vs Antigonos showdown is one of the great, but unfairly forgotten, campaigns in history. I can't wait to see it play out in the next episode or two! Also, why has no one ever done a Game of Thrones type series on this era? It's even bloodier, more intrigue-filled, and more lethal for major characters, than even GRRM dared to be; has the star power of having Alexander there at the start; and, on top of all that, is a true story (although obviously any such series would inevitably change things up a bit).

Then his son Demetrius took macedon and fight the selucus , lyscimachus, and phyrrus simultaneously. Then he again lost to phyrrus . And reduce his territory to few enclave again. And then his son antigonus ii re-establish the his kingdom in Macedonia and antagonids rule Macedonia until romans tookover . Full underdog story.😌

“Alexander, son of Philip, and the Greeks except the Lacedaimonians...” We can very well imagine how completely indifferent the Spartans would have been to this inscription. “Except the Lacedaimonians”- naturally. The Spartans weren’t to be led and ordered around like precious servants. Besides, a pan-Hellenic expedition without a Spartan king in command was not to be taken very seriously. Of course, then, “except the Lacedaimonians.” That’s certainly one point of view. Quite understandable. So, “except the Lacedaimonians” at Granikos, then at Issus, then in the decisive battle where the terrible army the Persians mustered at Arbela was wiped out: it set out for victory from Arbela, and was wiped out. And from this marvelous pan-Hellenic expedition, triumphant, brilliant in every way, celebrated on all sides, glorified as no other has ever been glorified, incomparable, we emerged: the great new Hellenic world. We the Alexandrians, the Antiochians, the Selefkians, and the countless other Greeks of Egypt and Syria, and those in Media, and Persia, and all the rest: with our far-flung supremacy, our flexible policy of judicious integration, and our Common Greek Language which we carried as far as Bactria, as far as the Indians. Talk about Lacedaimonians after that! C.P. CAVAFY "In 200 BCE"

Yes. It’s great. Especially because he stays close to the sources and only adds little plots and narration to make some aspects of the time easier to understand

It is particularly intresting learn about the beginning of hellenistic empire, I highly appreciate the work that you have done with that video and the pictures quality spite of that I would be much intrested about the in-dept political circunstances around the alexander death rather a terrific number of battles.
