Thank you for bringing these insights into the translation. I should not be surprised that there are layers to what sounds like a party song from the first note. I guess I should also not be surprised that a toxic portion of the fanbase exists. I'm glad that Babymetal powered forward to keep F. Hero onboard and glad F. Hero stayed onboard. Came back to add that, should a 4th album drop, the only expectation that I have is that it will be quality. After 3 albums and 10 years of performances that I have seen so far, I have 2 takeaways: 1. No one puts Babymetal in a corner - they will do their own thing on their own time. 2. Trust the process.

I don't comment very often (or maybe enough) but I really want to thank you for all the huge amount of time and effort you put in to your walk-through videos. I watch every one and in every case find a thousand more reasons to love the miracle that is BABTMETAL. So glad you carried on when you had doubts, your hard work behind the success is much appreciated, and I know for sure not just by me! I can only echo the sentiments others have mentioned here about the abuse received by F Hero. Obviously there is alaways going to be a bit of fan emotional excess around any band (or as you say, TV show or whatever), but I have never seen such unwarrented bitterness from any (so claimed) BM fans. Clearly those involved completely missed the point of just about everything BABYMETAL stand for! And missing Yui is no excuse for vitriol. Like all of us, I miss her dearly and always say a "Aw, Yui" with a big tear in my heart every time I see her, but I think she would be appalled at such treatment of a fellow artist. A dark moment for The One, and I truly hope that F Hero realises how much the massive majority of us appreciate his excellent contribution to this brilliant song. And OMG what a spectacular staging. IMHO only challenged by Arkadia for sheer visual assault! It would indeed be quite remarkable if the girls were just portraying their enthusiasm, but I always like to think thst they are loving every milisecond of the show, just like us. The outpouring of joy they always have by the time they get to the "we are..."s surely can't just be their stage faces can they?...or maybe they are just so relieved to get to the end of another full-on performance :) Many thanks again, AJ, much appreciated. By the time you get to the end of Metal Galaxy we should have the new album... ;)

I really appreciate this. You are right, I constantly think about stopping doing these, so your encouragement really helps. It's not just the time it takes to think them through and record: it's oddly anxious-making because I often feel like I'm not really adding to the conversation (so much of what I say has been said before by other fans). As I've said to others on his thread, other people know more than I do. I'm just a reader, I guess, and sometimes that doesn't feel like it's enough to justify putting these things out into the world. But supportive comments like yours keep me going. Thank you. I guess we are all F. Hero...

That was truly outstanding, professor. Getting a deeper meaning besides the obvious funny context has been mind-blowing. And intellectually pleasant (and unexpected!). I wasn't part of the fandom back in mid 2019 when the song premiered in Yokohama but I've read about the story about the criticism and so... I know I'm still a newbie but one thing I've learned so far (and probably the hard way) is to always expect the unexpected (as I said a million of times). And also to get rid of any prejudices (I still have plenty of them) and just enjoy the music and the amazing performances. Until next time!

Thanks for the deeper reading of the lyrics, hadn't thought of it that way, but it does fit. The thing that grabbed me about this song was always F.HERO and the story he tells about his part, and how welcoming team Babymetal was throughout, from including the Thai elements, to being there and reassuring him in the moment. F.HERO has said that he did not understand why koba chose him, BABYMETAL is a band that could get anyone they want, but I think that's exactly why they chose him. A truly talented musician, who as far as I can tell(don't speak the language) is a genuinely decent guy. He earned a non Thai listener in me, like with BABYMETAL I don't speak the language, but the emotion and point comes through in his music regardless. Especially Alarms, that song never fails to move me.

Something Mikiko said in an interview long ago. Yui and Moa love to perform, go on stage and put on someones face for a song, in essence act like you said, they beccome someone. She also said that when Su goes on stage, she doesn't become someone, she is someone. Su let's it all hang out in honesty. Album 2, what's your favorite song? Moa, party line - Karate, the current single. Su - her mind, Meta Taro. Album 3 same question - Moa, Pa Pa Ya, current single. Su - Oh! Majinai!. I believe Su's joy on stage is authentic, and the authenticity is what makes her able to bridge and fuse kawaii/jpop and metal better than anyone.

Another fantastic video Professor. I think the melding of elements is what makes Babymetal Babymetal... and it didn't take me too long to get into the song. What was strange about the initial backlash to me was that a lot of it was against having a rap section at all... which is highly strange to me given that all of the Black Babymetal songs are essential raps... and of course iine has a small rap section. As for the song, I love the fact that the whole Pa Pa Ya chanting through the song is revealed to be F Hero all along at the end of the song. (Koba et al do not get enough credit on their song construction). As for the video, debuting like 36 hours after they performed the show was ridiculously amazing. And... how about that Avenger (Kano). 14 years old, first time with Babymetal, biggest audience of her life. Yeah, she nails it.

This is maybe why she was the Ninth student council president. ;-) And Babymetal and SG in general: maybe also why Rob Halford said: the fearless Fox Gods. About Su-metal we know: "Ayami was asked [on Night of Spica] to tell one memorable Karen Girl's episode, and she mentioned a Su-chan trivia in their Saitama Auper Arena live 6 years ago. Back then the three were elementary schoolers and had not performed in front of huge audience like > 20k. Ayami and Yuika were kind of nervous under that circumstance. With that said, Su-chan was the one sleeping like a log at their dressing room until an hour before they went on the stage."

I'm only 7 minutes into the video, but as usual, I already like how they immediately make you smile. I agree 100%: No matter how often you watch it, it always make you happy like the first time. In this video it's the crowd engagement in particular that always leaves me in awe. Regarding your explanation of the first lines, it reminds me of the popular Japanese word "ganbare". At least in my understanding, it has those exact connotations: The important thing is how much passion and love you put into your efforts, regardless of your starting point and success.

Yes, the 'ganbare' theme is a very BM thing, isn't it? I think I raised it expressly in GJ and probably Meta Taro too. I especially love it when applied to artistic production, which is so often mystified in ways that belittle the sheer amount of work involved. Thanks!

Great lecture again & I appreciate it 有難うございます💛。And I have to say "thank you" to your mother-in-law. You two always make me aware of something that I should have known as a Japanese fan who can understand the lyrics. I did not notice that the first paragraph was question & answer. More importantly, the challenge by F. Hero was a very manifestation of the answer, as you suggested. At the actual venue, Su shouted "Come on F. Hero!" to summon him, then at the end she screamed "Thank you F. Hero!" and the three girls bowed deeply towards him to show their respect. That scene has always made me happy, but will make me happier after this lecture. I love this song especially because it was my first accidental and surprising encounter with BM (Glastonbury BBC footage in July 2019). To me, it was excellent, funny, playful but not "metal" song at all although the band's name was BABY "METAL". At a later date, I came to understand they did it intentionally. In the recently published book "10 BABYMETAL LEGENDS" authored by Kobametal, he writes "with the lapse of time, BABYMETAL itself may have become a formality and turned into a rigid established notion something like that metal elitists had stuck to. BABYMETAL, however, is like a creature that breaks its own shell, repeats casting off its old skin and grows transforming its shapes" [page 99]. (sorry for my poor translation) Oh! one more thing. At Budokan, I understood it was very hard to keep swinging towel above your head for 4 minutes all along. BM concerts are good for my fitness. (My smart watch indicated 600 kcal consumption after their one and a half hour show 😄 )

Nice review. There was a lot there that I never really considered with this song. Mostly cause I don't speak Japanese or Thai. But I enjoyed it from the moment I heard it. since I'm from NYC and old enough to remember when rap first became a thing in New York. Any time I hear someone rap and do a good job of it. I just smile. This song is full of smiles. And I am sad to learn how F hero was treated. It reminded me of the 80's when rap and metal could not mix. Which was a lie to begin with. But there were folks on both sides that wanted it to be true. Then we got a song by Aerosmith and Run D MC that changed all that. Still it lingers like a bad smell. In the beginning of rap there was no such thing as rap music as we know it today. The music part of rap songs came mostly from sampled rock songs and other sources. So rap started off with a bad "rap" for stealing other artist music. Rock fans hated the part about their songs being turned into another kind of music that didn't sound like rock. And some racism thrown in for bad measure as rap was mostly done by the minority community while rock was done by a mostly white community. So the lines were drawn from that. But as time goes on and folks get see how the two can play together. Things do change. But still there are knuckle heads in life who want to just be haters as they say. And that's what F hero got. But thankfully he stayed on and did the show and we got this wonderful performance. From what I've read Babymetal really were having the time of their lives performing this. Moa has mentioned the waving of the towels and how much they enjoyed seeing that. And how they wanted to see more of it in future concerts. For song everyone says is just about Papaya salad, there sure was a lot to say about it. That's one of the things I love about Babymetal, there's always more to it than you think when you first listen to them. I gotta say I look forward to your reviews.

You've done it again! Another great video. Every time I watch one of these, my appreciation for the song deepens and I love it even more. There are still people out there who write Babymetal off as nothing more than a gimmick or a cynical cash grab, but when you see the depth of meaning and the layers to their songs, you can see that it's very much a passion project and that a great deal of care and attention goes into everything they do. I'm very disappointed to hear about the backlash against F. Hero when the song was first revealed. Behaviour like that goes against everything this band represents. Unfortunately, there is a core among the fanbase who seem to be unable to accept anything the band have done since Yui left and are determined to find faults in everything. On a slightly different note, I don't know how much demand there would be for it, but I would love to see one of these videos for a Sakura Gakuin song. I remember you saying previously that they weren't really your thing, but a lot of their songs are very meaningful, so I'd be very interested in your take. There isn't a whole lot on RU-vid, but the MV for My Graduation Toss is there, and that is one of the best choices you could make. Heart no Hoshi would be another good one.

Just so you know, this song is about getting over the dark days after Yui left and Mikio died. Papaya is life. Even when it’s violently smashed and pounded to a pulp it comes out sweet and crunchy. Happiness and sadness go together. Suffering is a part of life, but you can move on. You fall and you rise again. Take a trip to Thailand, get some summer sun, have fun by the pool, and eat Som Tam with Sashimi. It’s an ebullient and defiant statement of rebirth. We are back and we are ready for it. ‘Brrrring it on.’ The rap speaks of a very personal Babymetal experience of Thailand and not a Thai one. ‘Life is like a box of chocolates mixed with papaya salad and pounded together’ is a direct reference to Babymetal. Thais don’t eat chocolate, they would never purposely expose themselves to the sun, the concept of summer has no meaning, they eat Som Tam with rotten fish, and very few Thai women would wear a bikini by a pool. Thais do like to write songs about foreigners' experiences of Thailand, though. They are very proud of the joyful and transformative effect they have on visitors. I write this now because the lyrics for 'Leave it All Behind' are also very personal. Perhaps it's easier to say what you want to say subtextually in a foreign language.

Unlike Distortion, this song got full of meanings, just like you said, but of course is also super fun and that's even better. Not saying that Distortion don't have meanings thou :P I always comment about this song saying is an allegory of life and full of metaphors, just to quick resume, but yeah the breakdown is quite interesting. About the Thai dance i noticed that not only contains traditional but also modern Thai dance elements, you will see this on Mor Lam songs, more about this in the rap section. I saw that F.Hero interview, couldn't understand everything but it'd be nice if someone translate everything he said about this affair. But certaintly all those bs many fans said about this collab didn't help at all. I think at this point the fans who really love the group and the entire BM team (not only the girls) but also understand the BM essence, are still here and they (we) stay for good, I think many shady-fans after Yui left become full of hate towards Koba and any route the group takes, and sadly those type of things are contagious and spread among many others, you can still see those around soc-med complaining about merchs or any decision, i mean criticism is fine and healthy, but at certain point it becomes an obssesion for some of them, and they dare to give advices like they were succesfull CEO at some trans international company, jeez. Anyway i don't want a fuss about this, i'm just saying what it is from my perspective. I found two translations from this rap section and i think you missed the first line meaning, here the first one, probably less accurate translation from azlyrics: _"First it's Morlum rock rock"_ But the fate came back to knock knock knock Because life is like chocolate pok pok Being mixed like papaya pok pok Got knocked knocked knocked, fall and rise Mash mash the joy with grief grief grief Papaya is crushed crushed crushed So it's tasty, so it's munchy, so it's crunchy, crunch crunch *Tuk Tuk speeder from Thai rider* Hot and spicy, now it's summer What's riding for the thunder Som tum and sashimi, mix them together Yes baby girl sanaka Order bikini from Lazada Stop thinking of pool oh lalala The sun is burning, let's PAPAYA YES?' This one is from lyricstranslate: _Rap, Rap, Molam, Rock, Rock_ Let the fortunes bring something to us, knock, knock! Life is like a Chocolate Box Box Mix and mash up like Papaya-Pok-Pok Knock, knock, knock, struggling Pound our lives with some happiness and sadness Papaya needs to be pound hard So it can be yummy, crispy and delicious Live your life fast like Thailand rider. Make your life feels hot and spicy cause this is summer! *“I was Lightning Before the Thunder"* Som-tam and Sashimi we’re gonna have some fun. Baby, girls, Hanaka Go order your bikinis from Lazada Jumpin' in the Pool La La La Let the sunburn. We’re gonna PAPAYA Just like you, i came to know many things about Thai culture just for this song and rap section. "Morlum", "Mor lam", "Molam" or "Molum" according to almighty wiki, is a traditional Lao form of song, interesting they didn't said "genre", but anyways, it spreads across the country and Thai culture took it too making this -genre- more popular, also the dance choreo some girls do with these songs are also with traditional hands movements but since is pretty danceable is more rhytmic, less "artistic" more "popular". The "papaya-pok-pok" also means som-tam, the traditional thai food. _Hot and spicy_ refer to a KFC chicken flavor, another metaphor here, the lyricstranlate helps a lot on this one ;) _Hanaka_ is the name of Thai old snack, is a slang word means "awesome". Thanks for sharing this rich analysis and now grab your towel, wave it and just like our queen said: _jump jump jump jump!_ \m/

I agree with your remarks on the lingering post-Yui toxicity among some fans. People get attached to the version of the band (or TV show or whatever) that they first connected to, so it's hard to see it evolve. I get that, and I accept that anyone has the right to decide that the new incarnation is not for them. But some of the negativity masquerading as rational criticism can get petty and spiteful. Thanks for the extra translations of the Thai. I don't speak it, so I'm reliant on other people. I definitely like the inclusion of the Morlum elements: totally makes sense. Thanks!

Sawatdii Sattrachan Hartley sabaai dii mai krab. Phom chob Babymetal. Phom phood pasa Thai nid noy krab. Hello Professor Hartley, I hope you are well? I like Babymetal. I speak a little bit of the Thai language (very little, beginner grade). I did try to join your live stream but I was away with work and sadly my phone kept dropping out so I gave up (a problem with Internet coverage in outback Australia). I am back in the city now and am just viewing your walkthrough. As usual, I am inspired by your insight and the way you allude to some potential, maybe, what if, scenarios in relation to the performance. Delicious. Professor, I really enjoy this song and am responding as I watch your analysis real time. As such, sometimes I might say things that you cover later in your video. Before the F Hero breakout: fun fact, you mentioned that F Hero wasn't a big star in Thailand before this song was released. However, I do think that he was quite popular in Thailand as I was familiar with some of his music before this song was released (even though he is a little more course in some of his music than he is in Papaya). I have even stumbled upon fans of F Hero finding Babymetal songs because of this colab, via a sort of reverse osmosis. So F Hero has brought fans to Babymetal as well. Kind of cool. Salad time: F Hero's kok kok kok ties in with the barking kon kon kon (of the kitsune), but I wonder if it is just an onomatopoeic prelude to the pok, pok, pok of the making of the Som Tam. I am continually amazed that Thai women will even say "pok, pok, pok" while they are pounding the Som Tam. (edit: yeah, I just saw that your friend told you that. But, it's true, they do say pok, pok, pok while mixing Som tam). The avoidance of the sun for fear of making their skin darker seems to be a common theme across Asia as this is common in Thailand as well. If you were to go in to most young women's bathrooms in Thailand you would find a tube or pot containing skin whitening cream. I also wonder about the choreo where the girls incorporate Thai dance movements. Many Thai dances have a particular cultural meaning and are performed at specific times. I know this because I had the honor of performing a Thai dance routine on stage at a big Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) here pre-Covid19. The performance was a traditional dance performed at New Years celebrations to the Thai song, Songkran. There was very specific movements that had a particular meaning in Thai culture that we had to learn. As a 'Farang' this was difficult as our dance teacher was very particular about the positions of fingers, hands, head, legs and feet. It took us weeks of practice to drill it down. So, this makes me wonder if Babymetal's dance has a specific meaning in Thai culture, or whether they are simply generic 'Thai looking' dance movements. Either way they would have taken a lot of practice. Thankyou for your analysis of Papaya. I have never looked at this song in the ways you discussed. I love how you can build an alternative story out of the lyrics and choreography of Babymetal songs. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next instalment.

I'm slowly going to make my way through all of your videos. Thank you so much for all this! Oh yeah and this may be one of my favorite 🎵 🎶 🎵

This was (once again) a cool analysis, thanks - who would've thought that this "summer festival party song" actually has a lot of meaning going on under its hood? PPY for me is kind of the "Gimme chocolate" of Metal galaxy, the most fun song.

At the start of the video: "probably nothing to say about it..." me checks video length. :-) 5:04 in Sakura Gakuin they used to say something which was often translated to: "perfect combustion" It always seems in Pa Pa Ya it's just Su-metal is flexing her skills with Rs to Japanese people. 15:33 "madness", something Babymetal has no problem with, their are so many unexpected things about Babymetal. 22:18 I think it's important to mention that the initial negative response he got wwas mych smaller than the positve response after I love, love, love how at the real show (not the MV with studio audio) Su-metal yells before F.Hero starts, something like: "Come on F.Hero !" If only in life we could all have a Su-metal call out to us personally that would have been amazing. :-) What you said about the stage lights, I remember in 2016 or so when Babymetal performed in NYC Moametal's microphone was still on when she walked off stage between songs and you could hear her say in Japanese of course and in frustration: "I can't get a feel for the audience.". It seems their were possibly multiple feelings coming from the audience. 27:45 so the "ring ring" sound in "bring bring bring it" could be a door bell of someone bringing something. 28:31 also reminds me how Babymetal always incorporates culture in many ways, movies are popular culture too so that can be incorporated. A title like From Dusk Till Dawn ? Or Catch Me If You Can ? Or in this case Forest Gump ? This is from an interview in 2014, a question for Kobametal: What was the inspiration for creating something so different? “[I was hoping] to incite that strange feeling that makes you go ‘what is this?’” KOBAMETAL explains, going on to give a concrete example; “Like the movie Kill Bill. I think Tarantino probably really likes Japan, and he worked hard on reproducing that in the movie, but it’s just slightly off, right? Still, it has a lot of originality.” For KOBAMETAL, that’s where the entertainment is. “[If] we were to do just straight metal-having the girls screaming-it probably wouldn’t be as interesting!” 43:27 I love the traditional instruments and I love how they do it live for real. I sounds great both ways. And going to Glastonbury straight away also fits the theme of the hard work. :-) Bringing it all back together in meta way: this still being a song about Babymetal like Road of Resistance, etc.

⚡ 💕 / 🌶 🌞 Lots of great points. I hadn't made that connection in the lyrics about all of the factors other than talent that are responsible for success. Although I did get how pounding the sweet and spicy ingredients together was a metaphor for life. I have to say that I was pretty embarrassed to be a BABYMETAL fan during some of the initial reaction to the song. We've all got genre preferences, but some of the anti-rap sentiment is ridiculous. It's a pretty diverse genre at this point. Not unlike Metal. It wasn't actually a leak though. That first Yokohama Arena concert was on June 28th, their first show in 2019. The digital single for 'PA PA YA!!' was released earlier that day. BABYMETAL's producer Koba went to Thailand to record F.HERO's track for 'PA PA YA!!'. He suggested adding accents in Morlum, the Thai folk song genre, and Koba liked the idea. They got a Thai producer named Thitiwat Rongthong to help with the traditional instruments. I already liked the rap section, but that brought the flow to another level. And as long as we're calling out folks for praise, how about "Baby Kano"? Riho Sayashi (a total pro of course) was on stage the previous night for the song premiere. This filmed concert featured Kano Fujihira as the supporting dancer. Kano was fourteen years old at the time. Like Su and Moa in their senior years before her, Kano was also Sakura Gakuin President.

Pa Pa Ya definitely leaked about a week before the official release. It was awful quality, which I think lent into the hate at the time.

Thanks, Rick. I confess, I didn't know all that. I often say that many of the people who watch these videos know more than I do, and I mean it. These are really helpful details. And I'm ashamed that I never mentioned Kano!

@@AndrewHartley OK. Well. Thanks. You bring a really unique perspective to BABYMETAL, largely from your literary and academic background. Combined with unabashed fandom. : ) It's very much appreciated. Looks like you were right about the song leaking in advance. I remember downloading it right away, but I'd totally forgotten about the leak before that.

@@AndrewHartley I think it's important to mention: nobody knows all the things in Babymetal. This is one of the great things about these videos are great, they bring knowledge in a central location.

I gotta be honest, all I wanted was an explanation for “pa pa ya”. Googled English lyrics then found your video. I saw it was 47 mins and I rolled my eyes. Lol. Stay with me… I started your video and considered skipping around until you got to the “pa pa ya” part but I decided to hear you out. Long story short, the next thing I knew I was at the end of your video. Glad I didn’t skip. I tip my hat to you sir for your dedication to the band, your own cultural curiosity and helping others like myself better understand. You have essentially built a bridge from my country to theirs. Which is what FHero was doing by rapping about his cultural staples. They extended their culture to him and he them. Anyone who says the song is about making salad is either shallow or dense. I do think you’re overthinking the phone thing though. Lol. I think she was just trying to sound more worldly by adding a tongue roll. Anyway, great video. I’ll be looking for you again if I ever need more than a Google lyric translation.
