Who ever made that ”collection” he edited it badly 😅 many of those songs were cutted the way it didn’t give the right picture how those songs really sound because it was just a short cut from chorus/hook

Fintelligens were really big , but a few years after came Cheek, his success made hiphop almost "too mainstream" for a while. His hit singles are the most streamed and most watched finnish rap tracks. The other half of Fintelligens, Elastinen has his own record label and been doing Finland's "The Voice" for many years now. He's quite popular still from toddler to grandparents.

Oh baby Oh baby I love you very much Why does your father has to be a provost? Otherwise we would be kissing each other, Driving to the sunset. You are beautiful and I am strong, Ah, you have a wonderful toe! I would very much like to take off your shirt, To see your lovely tan lines. I would very much love to kiss you. Why the heck is your father a provost? It's a beautiful summer night. School work isn't bothering us. I will always remember you, I hope you will remember me too. Baby I will do anything for you, I will freeze my grandma, I will fly to you. (chorus) I would like to be with you "that way", You know what I mean. I would love to touch you so, but what if your father finds out? When I see you my pants are throbbing. Oh baby check out this cannon! Ah now hormone is oozing, Why does your father has to be a mormon? Ah how lovely is your form, I would love to have your body completely to myself. It would be nice to have sexual intercourse with you, But I couldn't be bothered to kill a person (for that). (chorus) I would love to make love to you, Otherwise a gasstove is calling my name, or a hanging rope, or a razor blade. Come here baby, let's do a set. Ah I love your scent! I wonder how your dad figured out, What we were doing in the bathroom When we took each other's virginities. (chorus) ... And then the dude who is singing this song tells us how he got traumatized, but I will not write the lyrics here because it is not a nice image. (chorus)

Avain/Asa (the same dude) is someone you should definetly look in to, that dude is a sick writer, his lyrics are top notch. Fintelligens was great, they were a duo from which Elastinen went main stream/pop and made some very popular songs solo but he kinda left his roots a hiphop artist. Man, check out Huge L! The dude has made like at least 40 albums, propably 1000 songs, all produced by himself and is also considered to be the best freestyler in Finland according to most rap artists. True underground and self made DIY-hiphop artist. He also has an alter egos Pohjolan Molli and Herra Huu, both awesome. I'm not really a fan of hiphop and I hate like 95% of that type of music, but I do love Tupac, Ice Cube, Nas, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill and Wu-Tang Clan. British acts like The Streets, Gorillaz, Bob Vylan. I also found Ren couple of days ago and he's brilliant! I do not like Finnish hiphop in general, but Asa is good, Paleface has couple of good songs and so does JVG (mostly party stuff). But Huge L is out of this world with his beats, flow and lyrics. So chill, but still very rattatata like you said. Check his songs "1sanal", "Joo Joo", "Melankoholista (feat. Asa)", "Fressi", "Ma Ottaisin Laskun", "Oon Nahny" and "Mittasuhde Maailma". In that order too, 'cause 1sanal means with "oneword". Great rhyming with great flow! Oh, and one of the new acts I recommend is a group called Good Boys and a song "Niinku Saakeli". Great flow and one of them is like Finnish version of Busta Rhymes. Really fast!!! But good flow.

Finland has a very sizeable hiphop community, compared to it's size. It is probably one of biggest sub cultures here.. Been for a long time. As you can see, finnish hiphop dates back decades. It's gotten big enough to have broken into mainstream even since late 90s.. So yes. Finland has rap. Like real hiphop, not just any random rap. People take their hiphop pretty seriously too here. Now what comes to that "level went up past 6 years" the overall lyrical skill of hiphop has gone down, but hiphop has still gone even more versatile.. So there's something for everyone now. Back in 90s and 2000s it was all about lyrics. Now there is more all kinds of hiphop.. And that same effect reflects in the surface hiphop all around the world as well now. Gettomasa won the biggest finnish freestyle battle championship in 2012 and he still raps till this day.

The most popular genre in Finland is pop in Finnish. The most popular genre among the Finnish youth however is hip hop. Different Finnish cities can have their own hip hip history and sound. The performer of the first Finnish hip hop song, General Njassa aka Jyrki Jantunen was experimenting with different genres, hip hop included. The song was actually a hit of a sort in France: "HIP HOP avec Sidney! 13 (With General Njassa)". The song was on a collection album 'Art of Breeding', which was produced by Jimi Sumén and Kari Kalén. Sumén is pioneers of Finnish synth pop: "Jimi Sumén - (No More) Home Movies (1981)". The same year Jantunen rapped as General Njassa, he also sang in a band Musta Paraati, which is one of Finnish goth rock pioneers: "Musta paraati - Jää". So during those first years of "Finnish hip hop" producers and artists from different genres were experimenting with it, often humorously:"Bat and Ryyd - Ehtaa Tavaraa". That being said, MTV was airing in Finland too and 'Fame', 'The Message', 'Beat Street' were hits in Finland also. In 1985 Finland was already street dancing on an international level: "Disco Freestyle, Breaking ja Electric Boogie SM 1985". One influences to this was dance teacher Aira Samulin, who worked with the youth and had family in the US. She's credited E.g. for introducing Aerobics to Finland: "Virus Dance! Pop Corona! Performed By Finnish Dance Legend Aira Samulin Age 93!". Some early graffiti: "Floorphilia Crew presents Helsinki Graffiti 1985-199? Part 1". Some beatboxing: "Beatbox - Felix Zenger". Paleface is Finnish hip hop's grand old man. According the story he got his nickname when he was an exchange student in the US. Fintelligens is the most legendary of the Finnish groups. The first credible and commercially successful group rapping in Finnish. Elastinen from the group has performed also as a solo artist. Gettomasa is popular. JVG is also popular, if you liked them.
@aleksisuuronen5969

Yes well but hip hop is.. kinda mostly pop in mainstream Finland. If you wanna actually write complex lyrics with innovative flows.. it's propably not gonna work out for you (Are ja Stepa kouluttautu opettajiksi koska ei vaan musalla tee massia ja Are on yksi kovimpia kirjottajia ja freestailaajia Suomessa). Neither is if you tap into street culture and not into mainstream, finnish people do not get it or really like it. A bit over 10 years ago there was a Great balance of both and now you just cannot make any money by putting more effort into rhymes and talk about more complex topics in more complex way. Even someone like Huge L who just does what he wants knew it won't be a ticket to more than just about making barely the minimum pay by liking to actually play with words (tulee mieleen esim: Asmaatikolle syötän pölykapselin. Kapselin pölyä. Kaiken täytyy olla niin suoraan sanottua suomiräpissä eikä voi olla tälläisiä ovelia sanaleikkejä). So he always kept his original job as a mail-man, does not do gigs, has maybe released only two more so serious albums. Otherwise just puts out like.. 6 albums a year just because why not. Even tho on top the dude also makes some of the best finnish beats. Then someone like Skandaali at the start of 2000's was and still is Super skilled, but he leaned on what people wanted to hear to get the money out of it and have fun. The down-spiral started when the small labels died and big labels are super strickt with what they let you put out and it will mostly be targeted to mainstream. Because Finland is a small country and most do not simply understand hip hop culture or like it or pay attention to complex lyricism. So it is what it is, do not work long-term if not going into mainstream more poppy or rock rap or it will just after your time become a hobby with a real job (aka skills will get rusted). Finnish hip hop isn't really in very good place from pure hip hop standpoint, just the truth. Only very few like Pyhimys have managed to kinda dance on the line and even he knew they need to do mainstream radio pop hits with Teflon Brothers to make the money for the actual projects.

Occurred to me that you might find interesting what some of your countrymen have been up to in Finland. Starting with The renegades, who for awhile were more popular in Finland than The Beatles: "The Renegades - Thirteen Women 1966", "Wigwam - Freddie Are You Ready (TV Promo, 1975)", "Frank Robson & Hurmerinta-Sorvali Band: Storm (live 1976)", "Paul Oxley´s Unit Terry´s inside" and "Jussi Halme - Lori St. John - Love Pact (1985)". Ending with Raymond Ebanks, who is best known from Bomfunk MC's: "B.A.M. feat. B.O.W. and MC Stand'n'Tall - Make Ya Think / Our Philosophy" and "Bomfunk MC's - (Crack It) Something Going On".

I remember seeing for example Nuera much earlier and when I checked they were active during 1989-2003. Fintelligens started around 1997. There were several groups I knew and made it seriously even if they did not manage to have publicity in broader audiences than the underground culture already had. That doesn’t mean they did not exist or didn’t matter.

Hi from Estonia! Been fan of Finnish rap since the beginning of 2000s. Fintelligens was good! Was fan of Skandaali, but his music modernised and I don't like him since. Elämä on peli was one of my most listened tracks in that time. Gettomasa is propably my favourite with his companions like Are and others. Could someone recommend me more Finnish artists similar to prevously mentiones ones? Also do a similar react video about Estonian rap music.

I really enjoyed this video, would love to see more of these! If you’re interested in reacting to more underground artists aswell, here are a few suggestions from the west coast of Finland (only listing songs with music videos): 1. FAKTIO - Viispäinen hirviö. This group, based in Vaasa, combines rap/hiphop/trap and lately some pop punk-tunes. This banger was their first release which happened during corona. 2. MATUKKA - Kuolinhuone. Matukka is a youtuber/musician who used to do rant videos, and shocked the audience with this diss track of Finnish youtubers. It’s like a lovely slap in the face. Also from Vaasa. If you look closely you notice he looks a bit like one of the guys in Faktio lol. 3. WALT MIGUEL - Hall käft. Walt is a Swedish speaking finn, but he also raps in Spanish and Finnish. ”Hall käft” is an ode to his home town and other ug/og rappers from Pietarsaari-Jakobstad (called Jeppis). Other bangers: Perros, in Spanish, and Liekkii, in Finnish.

The underground tape markets were going crazy all over the nordic countries in the 80's and 90's which is why metal and hip hop got so damn big so fast. Even punk got pretty big, and I mean actual punk and not just like pop punk Green Day or shit like that. Especially in the 90's death metal and black metal were massive scenes already in all Nordics

So if you're going to make a proper reaction video I'd check Mariska who was one of the first commercially successful female rappers in the early 2000's. Hip hop is very big in Finland and has been through the 2000’s. What I find strange personally though that the styles that historically formed in to hip hop being soul, rnb, funk and certain tempos of disco have not really ever had such mainstream success as hip hop has had in the last 20 years. I can dig out individual tracks from the past that groove in a very funky way, but those have not been the biggest hits in Finland by a long shot. Professional musicians in Finland have always been very hip to the latest international styles of the ”Black Atlantic” if that is a correct term to describe the roots of all of this music. Very good players and studio musicians have worked through the 60s, 70s and 80s and traveled to the U.S. and back to get influences and learn. But what seems to have been the most selling music for the ”general public” in the end has been rhythmically far from the root styles of hip hop. Most money for musicians in the past has always been in the more ”schlager” oriented styles of dance music for a lack of a better term. Or styles that easily cross over with classical music, like certain rock and metal more directly (Bach but on an electric guitar). What I think conceptually makes up a good groove (interlocking repetitive rhythms within a certain timespan, usually two bars following an underlying clave like rhythmic pattern) has not been the priority in most Finnish mainstream music of the 1900s and certainly not a thing in classical music at all, which is sort of more ”Finnish thing” than hip hop and other black music. There is one country wide commercial radio channel ”Groove FM” that plays rnb, funk, jazz and disco but it rarely features actual personnel in the studio curating the music, they just play playlists and programs bought from BBC (which are great! Like the Ronnie Scotts jazz show etc). As a lover of jazz, funk, rnb, soul and all the latin american and african styles of music I am super happy that actually through the rise of hip hops popularity, I think the core musical influences and musical substance (certain rhythms, jazz/rnb harmony, time feel manipulation, swing etc) have started to take more and more root in the mainstream Finnish musical landscape. But in terms of multicultural understanding it is important that in a mostly white country like Finland the history and roots of these global musical styles is understood. That is not always the case at all… With overt racism on the rise in Finnish mainstream politics (and all over europe), these kind of issues are more and more important. It is blatant hypocrisy to dance to beats with historic roots in Black Atlantic and African cultures but then say disrespectable things about the people when immigrants from such countries come to Finland.

Fintelligens were big back in the day. They now own a rap/hip hop label called "Rähinä Records" and people like Asa (formelly known as Avain), Kapasiteettiyksikkö, Timo Pieni Huijaus (formelly known as II or Idän Ihme), etc. are part of that brand. The brand is like Def Jam of Finland. Fintelligens are considered as pioneers of Finnish hip-hop and you should definetly look in to them and Rähinä Records in general.

Some artist info that you liked. Fintelligens as an act, by my rap standards, was one of the best ones around even to this day. Early fintelligens had a lot of lyrics and beats that i concider "the real stuff". They split later on and Elastinen started quite successful solo career, but it quite wasnt the same as the music had become more mainstream. Should check their song "Kelaa sitä". Paleface: His nickname came from the time when he was an exchange student in the states. He rapped in english and was quite successful in his early days. (later on he also made songs in finnish) Even to this day, the guy is still loyal to the cause, rapping/singing/giving interviews about imperfections in society. Should check the song "back to square one". Personally i also loved colgate soulmate, so special recommendation for that one. Gettomasa is arguably the biggest guy in the scene right now. Without a doubt a skilled guy. Personally i'm not a big fan of modern rap. Here are some recommendations to check out. Huge L (in my opinnion the best lyrics writer even to this day, regardless in the genre). Many good songs but for example Vihellellen, fressi, oon nähnyt, ei toivottu lastenlaulu or melankoholista. Asa (avain), especially his album "Via Karelia". Rockin da north, an act that had multiple "hot" rappers of the time. Same thing with Royal family. Should check songs "Naiset" and "kaikki yhen puolest". Ruger Hauer, especially their album "se syvenee syksyllä". Pyhimys, especially album paranoid. Peace!

We have really good, free education and a healthy culture (and subculture) sector, all sorts of culture funds from state and very good quality music education (classical AND popular), so it's no wonder we have a lot of good musicians. :) Honestly, I grew up in 90's and hiphop spirit was strong, and it gave good foundation for the future rappers to be inspired, tutored, and have producers and labels to work with. And you're right, finnish is a very angular language, we have a lot of double consonants that give great rhythm to rap.

Oh, and what happened past x years, in my opinion, was that the rap capital of Finland, Jyväskylä, breeded some young and talented producers and rappers who not only were able to eventually make rap mainstream, but also - probably by being tech savvy and had the unlimited access to the internet - were able to make world class quality audio with cheap or minimal equipment, as in a good mic and a home PC. Before that, there was low to no money to make in rap and hip-hop, so nobody had an access to a proper studio and professional producers etc.

A lot of mates there.. I grew up with the same circle of friends as the Nuera guys in Tampere and Ylöjärvi, and started DJing later around '96 when studying in Jyväskylä. Moved abroad 2006, so what was going on in Finland fell a bit under my radar. But I think things have really diversified and matured since then. Besides Nuera, I used to DJ at the same parties with Paleface, Ezkimo (rest in peace, homie) and Aksim and Yodarock from Kemmuru. Iso-H and Ewok from Fintelligens were sleeping at my student flat back in the days when they visited Jyväskylä. Aksim started producing and rapping earnestly around the same time I was DJing and we could instantly recognise his talent. He was always experimenting with sounds. He has also produced some non-Finnish artists, e.g. MF Grimm. He's still very much active, for example collaborating with Gettomasa. In fact, I moved back to Finland last winter and had one of my first DJ gigs at an event organised by Aksim. Couple of ones I would've added here at the latter half of 90's - early 00's (although it's of course difficult to be all compassing in a short video like that): Ceebrolistics with their "West Coast UG" sound (think about Living Legends, Project Blowed), Tulenkantajat from Lapland with their live band, Ritarikunta from Turku (although they were featured in one of the tracks as collabo), a group with one of the early 90's pioneers MC Nikke T (even if he himself is not that happy to bring up THAT history :D), Juhani, who's actually been back to producing beats (a thing he does rather well) lately. But great to see some Finnish hip hop being recognised abroad. We also have some good breakers and painters, so shout out to them!
