OK that would explain why Sis Anger was the one song Duane Metal refused to translate (he said something like the language and some expressions were too strong and inappropriate I think) and why the translations I have seen in the past always looked like they had been watered down ... and why Yui and Moa apparently couldn't stop giggling when they first saw them. I've always liked Sis Anger, the contrast between the black metal instrumentals and Yui and Moa with their sweet vocals just works.

I think you mean Duane Metal, the guy who did the 'Learning Japanese with BABYMETAL' videos . He decided to skip this one, and mentioned in one of his other videos that he thought the language was inappropriate for girls of Yui and Moa's age. These subtitles are definitely exaggerated though. Du-metal has a translation on his site, with a lot more context: du-metal.blogspot.com/2016/04/sis-anger.html

Koba Metal, creator of BabyMetal is a huge X-Japan and Metallica fan. Metallica said " That’s what ‘St Anger’ really means to me: being able to express anger in a healthy way, instead of just shutting up and being intimidating and then raging out on someone when it all builds up." It is commonly regard as a homage to Metallica's St Anger. So it can be interpret as girl fed up with her loved one or against a random guy doing inappropriate things. Releasing her emotions. Some fans wonder why (Amuse let) BLACK BABYMETAL sing these somewhat offensive lyrics. Yet Moa Metal said like "I hope 'Sis. Anger' would encourage many people." and Yui Metal said like "This song made me stand up straight when I sang it, so I hope it can motivate the listeners even a little". du-metal.blogspot.com/2016/04/sis-anger.html (More accurate translation here) There are two songs recorded by Black Babymetal, a duo comprised of Yuimetal and Moametal. First, could you tell us about the song "Sis. Anger"? Moametal: "Sis. Anger" is such a fun song. [Laughs] We couldn't stop laughing during our studio recording. The genre of this song is black metal, and its lyrics contain black humor. I think the song was born only because of Black Babymetal. Its lyrics are scary, but if you listen to the song, it makes you laugh and get energized. How about another Black Babymetal song, "GJ!"? Yuimetal: It's a reward song and sounds cuter than "Sis. Anger." Personally, I get motivated by listening to "Sis. Anger" and tell myself, "OK, I did a good job." I hope our audience listen to these two songs in sequence. www.billboard.com/articles/news/7318798/babymetal-world-tour-metal-resistance-album-ariana-grande-interview

It's called BLACK BABYMETAL, when only Yui and Moa are on. About the translation of the lyrics: they're a lot less explicit, in Japanese. But, they were considered 'risque', nonetheless. Overall, the tone is similar, I guess: "If you're a poser, trying to impress us, being fake, and with your 'tough' attitude: take a hike!" (Or, "F-off", if you want to be more explicit. :-))
@jeffschreifels8651
@jeffschreifels8651 4 года назад
Yeah it's obviously not the image that Babymetal is trying to forth so I doubt very much that this is the intended translation. That doesn't necessarily mean the girls attitudes aren't more like this in their private lives, but as Babymetal I highly doubt it.
@MrFloppyHare
@MrFloppyHare 4 года назад
@@jeffschreifels8651 It isn't an accurate translation. But, even explicitly telling off someone, is considered "not done", in Japan. Some of the lyrics where, therefore, considered quite risque. In their private lives, who knows? I think that, at least, Yui is quite a bit more tough and explicit than her BABYMETAL persona allowed her to be. She grew up with two brothers and hinted multiple times at wanting to be more casual and explicit.

If the translation isn't making you a little uncomfortable that the language is coming from Yui and Moa at that age, then it's not doing its job. Whether and how much a translator chose to use curse words is a judgement call, but they do have the desired effect, while a tame, inoffensive translation misses the point.

Many thanks for your reaction from Japan 有難う💛。 The lyrics in English looks too strong for me. Translating lyrics into different languages with subtle nuance is very difficult. The original lyrics makes me feel that little girls (sis) are trying to encourage elder guys who are in a blue mood or in depression. The words used are not dirty like "asshole". They are trying not to scold us but to inflame our guts in a little bit harsh manner. So tens of thousands people at the concerts felt happy when they were called "idiots" and "stupid" by cute girls. BTW, I love to hear my granddaughter say "you moron , grandpa".

As a duo Yui & Moa were known as Black Babymetal, as in Black Sabbath, but in the lore of the band it corresponds to a "fallen" version of Babymetal; they gave in to temptation and strayed off the path ordained by the Fox God. In Onedari Daisakusen they gave in to Greed, and became materialistic and manipulative towards their fathers (the calculated "Operation: Beg Dad For Stuff"). In Sis Anger they gave into Anger towards lame boys and unleashed their fury in a torrent of Death Metal. You shouldn't expect to find anything similar in the lyrics of either Black Babymetal's other two songs, or in the rest of the Babymetal discography.

I actually like to think of this song as a middle finger to those who thinks they (Yui and Moa) are insignificant for Babymetal as a whole; that Black Babymetal are better in their role as "Dance and Scream" support for Babymetal, compared to the haters that had done nothing good either in main role or support role... But it's an open intepretation of course ahahahaha

I'm not Japanese so know very little about the language but I have seen this same song translated with much more tame lyrics. The point is basically the same though. They did say they were very surprised by the lyrics so maybe this is the actual intended mood of the song but i'm a little skeptical.
@Shoe-metal
@Shoe-metal 4 года назад
The tamer translation is from someone uncomfortable with the relatively coarse (esp. coming from young girls) language and feeling protective of Babymetal's image overseas. We've long heard that the lyrics come across rougher and ruder in Japanese. In the past I've posted an alternate translation in reaction comments from a Japanese person who wanted us to have a better understanding of the impression it gives. You get the idea right from the start when instead of "I dislike" it's "I _hate"_ . And if you think back to the Tokyo Dome video intro to the song you realize that has to be more accurate.
@jeffschreifels8651
@jeffschreifels8651 4 года назад
@@Shoe-metal i never said the tame interpretation was the correct one. I believe the one in this video his too far the other way. Reality likely lies somewhere in between. They are not going to push a goody goody image then abandon that for one song. Even with the tame lyrics, i don't think anyone has ever missed the point of the song.

Not only language barrier, but also cultural barrier exist in this case. It's a difficult topic actually. The song is conveying anger, and the lyricist doesn't hold back. But literal translation may sound lame for western culture who are accustomed to hearing strong languages in their daily life. With this in mind, I suppose the translators had to came up with words to carry the equivalent tone to its original intent with the influence of their own culture. Japanese day-to-day life is incredibly polite with several level of politeness, to the point where sometimes it became a mockery in other culture. At the same time though, Japanese expression in art often quite blatant, vulgar, and even unacceptable in other culture (even for other Japanese sometimes, and several BM works may fall into this category). Like it or not, it is the way it is :) Just my two cents. Do correct me if I'm wrong. :)

The translation of the lyrics is as bad as the compilations from this AMR channel itself. I can even tell that with my limited knowledge of Japanese. They are definitely not that explicit. They still use "gosh" and "butt" in their lyrics nowadays, so I don't think there's anything like "asshole" or "don't piss us off" in the lyrics when they were 16. It's not something you do in Japanese media, especially as girls/women who want to be respected and successful. Bakayaro, which was translated to "assholes", means idiot or moron. Difference between "baka", which also means idiot or stupid, and bakayaro is simply that the latter is not used in a funny or endearing way, only to really call someone an idiot. Which was probably tuned up to 13 by the people who translated this compliation and thus became "asshole". The song is simply about girls being angered by boys who try to act cool and don't respect when the girls want nothing to do with them. Not about wanting to kill them because they're assholes :D
@piotrtoborek2442
@piotrtoborek2442 4 года назад
Yeah? So where in this translation you saw anything about killing someone? Isn't "an asshole" one of the milder insults used by ill-tempered teenagers on the west? I've heard much worse than "piss off" from people younger than 16 y.o. (not that I like it, it's just a fact). Much harded than "bakayarou" is "konoyarou" often translated as bastard/fu**er/SOB so "asshole" is more than fitting here. This is the way it is...
@ANDOR-
@ANDOR- 4 года назад
Seems like you're the one who wants to kill someone. My remark at the end was obviously exaggerated in a non serious way, that's why I used the ":D" smiley. And the second thing you answered yourself in your first sentence, "in the west". You can translate the meaning of "bakayaro" however you want, but you don't use language like "asshole" in Japanese media if you're a teenager, especially a female one, if you want to have success and be respected in a field other than pro-wrestling or late night comedy. If you can show me one official video of an idol (which 90+% of female known vocalists are in Japan at that age) using language like "don't piss me off" or "asshole" and mean it like that and I will gladly accept what's translated in this video. Until that happens I stand by what I said. It's badly translated and not even because I hate compilations.

Being said that...there is no way there is any profanity from these girls being at that age and just coming from a private school... Nice try who every translated...but all of BabyMetal's songs are positive in nature. Trying to ruin the reputation of highly respectable artists...
