The moving alto aria Agnus Dei - recorded here for All of Bach with conductor Jos van Veldhoven and alto David Erler - forms the first part of the finale of Bach’s all-embracing masterpiece, the Mass in B minor (‘Hohe Messe’). The violins play the same plaintive part, unisono, thus underlining the pleading call of the alto: Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Het is preciès deze uitvoering van NBS die mij diep treft. Echt zò perfect. De gehele uitvoering is terug te vinden in All Of Bach . Deze uitvoering heb ik dan ook gedownload en bekijk en beluister het zeer regelmatig terug. Elke keer een genot! Dank NBS !!

This group is great. Everything they perform is wonderful. That said, I'm not fond of countertenors. Sorry to say that. I know it's authentic, and this soloist is excellent, but give me a female singer!

@@prss1563 Don't get me wrong: this solist is excellent and using a counter tenor is historically correct, but not nearly always done so. I don't think you did not know this when you said that. As far as I know, historically it was done because women were not acceptable as singers in Bach's time. So this wouldn't be an argument today. The directors have strange double standards in this regard: trying to be historically correct in some ways but not in others.

We at the Bach Society do not care whether the singer of the alto part is a man or a woman. For each performance, we cast the singers based on the part and the wishes of the (guest) conductor. In doing so, we look for the right sound and timbre, regardless of the singer's gender.

@@bach Gender issues have nothing to do with this thread and also no one accused anyone of any shortcoming. An Alto just sounds different from a counter tenor, and I just like that better in the case of this _"Agnus Dei"_ , that's all.

@@TheSoteriologist The 'authentic' sound is probably that of a boy Alto - counter - tenors were not very common in Bach's Germany and castrato male altos were only used in catholic countries - women were not allowed to sing in church - Bach was seriously reprimanded when his wife Maria Barbara sang for him in rehearsal at St. Thomas', so, to be as true as possible to the sound that Bach might have heard, a Counter -Tenor is probably your 'best bet' - certainly David Erler sounds suitably 'boyish' here.
