On a first hearing, 'Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr', performed by Reitze Smits for All of Bach, might only just count as a chorale arrangement, as we have to wait until almost the end to gain a recognisable glimpse of the popular melody, a German adaptation of the Gloria. But just as in BWV 662 and 663, the theme is actually everywhere (the virtuoso runs skirt or ornament the melody), only now Bach is hiding it behind an exuberant dancy piece pervaded by Italian elegance.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on November 29th 2013 at the Lutheran Church, The Hague. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

Das ist der beste Bach und wahrscheinlich der beste Organist auf dem riesigen "Orgelfeld" unserer Zeit.

I have returned to listen to this work several times. Each time I encounter segments, when I get goose bumps of pleasure. If this is a piece of heaven, then I am signing up.

I have to bow in the presence of this creation, its performance and the instrument used for it. Greatest respect.

It is a mighty world of wonders we live in today, but stop and think a moment on a pipe organ. There is no electricity, no power grid. We believe that the hydraulis, literally "water (driven) pipe (instrument)”, goes back to the 3rd century BC of Ancient Greece. After centuries of development, when JS Bach is born in 1685, this is the most complex machine for music ever devised. Rank upon rank of pipes large and small activated by rows of stops. Multiple keyboards for one person’s ten fingers plus the pedals to keep the two feet busy. The amount of practice to be an expert player and then to write the music that we love today. It really staggers the imagination!

The reason for so much cheerfulness is not only a musical one, although Bach has clearly enjoyed himself in the clear, virtuoso sonata style from across the Alps. He even gives two imitations of the arpeggios or broken chords heard so often in Venetian violin music. But Bach goes further and imbues the piece with strong Trinity symbolism that is deeply rooted in Luther’s sermons. If we regard BWV 662 as a rendition of the Father and 663 as the Son, then this chorale arrangement is unmistakeably a reflection of the Holy Ghost, the Giver of Life, whom Luther always portrayed as the source of joy and comfort in his Whitsun sermons. The Holy Ghost promises that mankind can share in the lightness of the angels. So nothing could be more natural than two (heavenly?) voices tumbling over one another above a simple baroque bass line. And when the original melody does surface suddenly amidst their revelry, that is where you hear Bach’s genius. In order to emphasise his devotion, he also signed the work with S.D.G.: ‘Soli Deo Gloria’.

This is one of the many chorale preludes on the hymn. It is actually just as hard as other movements from Bachs 6 trio sonatas. The thrills in the middle of the piece are pretty tough 😬 But this rendition is very very good and the performer just has an excellent touch. Great videography as well (as one expects :) 👍🏻

Yes, this is actually one of the hardest pieces, rhythmically, I would say this piece is harder than the trio sonatas... I hope I can play it one day and wish the same to other aspiring organ students. P.S. Mr. Smits played this beautifully!

Yes indeed. The performer here does full justice to this lovely piece. We are very lucky to have such treats available to us now on RU-vid. About these trills, not everybody plays trills. One person who doesn't is the excellent Liudmila Matsyura, whose performance is on RU-vid. Mordents are written in the score, for what that's worth. My own feeling is that trills would need to be done if this piece was to played on a pedal harpsichord, which it could have been, but since the notes can be sustained on the organ why play trills unless you actually like them? Personally I don't.

Do you guys intend to release these amazing performances on CDs or other platforms like Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer or even Spotify? I'd very much prefer to have them in a more convenient way and I don't mind paying for it. Though I understand if this work is non-profit. If that's the case can you provide the lossless audio files through video description? (as FLAC, ALAC or WAV). It's a shame that such beautiful audio and video mastering can't be properly enjoyed because of youtube compression.

Prachtig, prachtig, prachtig. Bach schreef misschien wel de allermooiste muziek die hij kon bedenken bij dit lied. Allein Gott in de Höh sei Ehr! Hoeveel keer komt het voor bij de orgelwerken? 4 of 5 keer toch zeker. En allemaal even wonderbaarlijk mooi. Verheven, sierlijk En Smits speelt het zo mooi. Dank!
