A piece for string ensemble that doesn't even bother to have parts for the violins? What a dream! 🤩

The original is for two viole da braccio, two viole da gamba, violoncello, violone and cembalo. Bach’s interpretaties of your dream.
@bobbwc7011
@bobbwc7011 3 года назад
@ijdoti Bach was a fan of the Bratsche (German name for Viola) and loved playing it. There is also a little controversy about this concerto; the parts for the Gamben (Gambe is the German name for the knee-violin / Viola da gamba) appear to be too simple or too meaningless compared to the rest of the composition. The Concerto no. 6 is known to be the oldest of the Brandenburg concertos, so there is speculation that it might have originally been a piece of traditional chamber music, a so-called Trio sonata for 2x Bratsche and Continuo, and that the rest of the music was added by Bach later where he recycled older material for some of the Viola da gamba sections.

Scholars think that this piece helped bach get fired from his post in Cöthen cause of his lack of violins

The spacing of the slow movement as it relates to Bach's counterpoint is astonishing. And the two violas make the entire piece thick and sinewy and yet lyrical. Great performance of something that shaped my thinking since age 14. Dog.

@mwmcbroom
@mwmcbroom 6 лет назад
Typical. This can be quite annoying. Like watching a bass player going 'thump thump' while a guitarist is taking a hot solo. If I were the video director in this or any other video in which music performers are being recorded, I'd insist that the camera person(s) know how to play at least one instrument. Or, if the camera people are wearing earbuds, then it's up to the video director to tell who to point at what. In either case, it is seldom done correctly.

Michael McBroom They should have a competent musician with a score directing the cameraman to focus on the important stuff. That’s Hildegarde “Hille” Perl. I found this bit of history about her de Gamba; “The man who gave it to me found it in a cloister in Tyrol in the year 1952-apparently it had been lying in the attic for a few hundred years. I am so lucky it found its way to me and I hope it will play on, long after I am gone. I know that in the year 1953, Ingo Muthesius brought it back into playing condition: He had to make a new neck for it but kept the original pegs and the lion’s head. The rest of the instrument is pretty much in original condition, except of course for the string holder, the fingerboard, and bridge.” stringsmagazine.com/violist-da-gamba-hille-perl-on-her-instruments-venerable-beauty/

The third movement is something straight from God to Bach. The syncopation. In my top ten favorite classical works. A DJ called it something like "carefree rollerblading". To me it is the music of the spheres, Bach's evocation of the passing of time in the turning of the seasons or the drifting of the universe. Insanely beautiful.

Above all, the music of Bach to me is driven, like a force of nature. I think of him as the most inhuman of composers and the one nearest to God. This interpretation captures that quality much better than the other, I think.

I notice differences in time (faster in this); the Mozart Orchestra is softer, less contrasting in dynamics. The tuning I feel is higher than in the other, but I have no absolute pitch.

@@b.j.n.g.354because there’re viola da gamba in this piece so to differentiate viola and viol, the viola part is written as Viola da Braccio I and II

My kitty Juju is a Bach scholar besides a catnip delitante and informs me the reason why Bach wrote this piece for Violas is because his patron the Prince of Cothen was an indifferent viola player and its composition was to accommodate the prince. Juju especially likes to dance the gigue to the 3rd movement.

Bach music resembles life. There is adagio in allegro, and sometime vice versa.

I hadn't noticed, until I listened through this series of interpretations, how each concerto uses sparser instrumentation than the preceding ones....

Oi, Euroarts... Get your facts sorted! Contrary to the credits which appear at the beginning of this video, the second violist who performs in this movement of the Brandenburg Concertos is NOT Ulrike Kaufmann, who is nevertheless a wonderful violist. Rather, the second violist who performs in this movement is the equally wonderful. but much underrated, and quite superb Annette Schmidt. Got That?
