Stewart W. Foster playing Johann Sebastian Bach's "Komm Süsser Tod" at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, home to the world's largest Church pipe organ.
Visitors have many opportunities to hear this magnificent instrument throughout the year; our Organ Concert Series features artists of world renown. Also, each week our Organist in Residence, Stewart W. Foster, presents half-hour preludes on Sundays at 10:30 am, as well as weekly free concerts each Thursday at 12:10 pm.
We are also home to the Los Angeles Bach Festival, the oldest cultural festival in Los Angeles, which began in 1934 under the direction of John Smallman and continues to be a cultural highlight each October. Our Cathedral Choir is made up of both professional and volunteer singers under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Jonathan Talberg. The choir performs a wide selection of sacred music and often offers special musical presentations as part of our morning worship.
First Church is also proud to be home-base for two nationally recognized choruses; Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, and Vox Femina of Los Angeles. Each of these organizations utilizes our space for rehearsals, and performs at least one concert per year in our venue. Members of these groups also participate in our Sunday morning worship from time to time.

With an organ this size, I would think that the registration could have been better. In my opinion, this piece should showcase the lushness of the beautiful strings and flues of this pipe organ.

This is actually the second largest church organ in the world. The largest is the organ at West Point Chapel in New York. This is the largest drawnob console, but not the largest church organ. And I also remember hearing something about this organ is actually two completely separate pipe organs just controlled by a single console.

+Logan Koller Wrong: This is the LARGEST in a church , not in a chappel, and all the 22,000+ pipes are controlled by TWO consoles, there's not two separate organs, but a combination of 5.

Logan, I would love to hear you play this organ. When I was on staff at First Presbyterian in Bakersfield, our organ was from the Navel Academy at Annapolis. It was an amazing instrument. I sat bench to page turn and record for a pastor/organist friend of mine. As Bakersfield is VERY dry, when Vern pulled a drawknob, the top popped off into the pedalboard. You should have seen me try to fish it out while he continued to play!! 🎶😂

@U. J. passau is the largest in Europe and has only 17,975 pipes - this organs got over 20,000. Passau has 233 ranks while this has 346. The West Point chapel is the largest organ in the world in a church/religious setting

I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. It was paced well, registered with great thought and sympathy for the work, and the instrument lends a richness to the performance it deserves. No, it isn't Virgil, and it wasn't performed on the Wanamaker. But I am delighted with it, and unfuck the naysayers and the flea bitten burros they rode in on.

Excellent organist but poor quality recording. Virgil Fox's recording on the Wanamaker is far superior.

Comparing this to Virgil and the Wanamaker? Impossible. Like comparing apples to kiwi fruit.

great sound...too much posturing. Think I prefer Virgil at Wanamaker.

the wood on the organ looks as if it is fumed oak, maybe red. i don't like that old cat piss greenish-yellowish color, but the organ sounds okay, and the organist is doing well. not recorded very well, imo.

No, not even close. The Mormon Tabernacle organ is one of the largest, but it isn't as big is this one.
