The Cello Suites are the essence of Bach, a meditation which mysteriously connects us to ourselves and to the universe at once. My new transcription of this beloved set shows a refreshing perspective to a pianist, zooming in on the individual line, patterns, tone quality, and the great composer’s vocabulary. I find the experience of playing the Suites on the keyboard not only aesthetically satisfying but also relaxing and joyful. We could all use an opportunity to enjoy our music-making without unnecessary stress, especially in current times. I am also eager to bring these 36 pieces to many pianists and students because they are immensely beneficial for working on tone and finger technique.

You have a knack for presenting Bach’s music in a way that brings a new clarity.

Bach at the piano is as divine and celestial as it can get ( ...actually Bach needed to compose for harpsichord back then for the piano was invented not until he was on the verge of dying... ) and to have these suites arranged that way is truly a donum dei - a gift of God. Le p'tit Daniel🐕🐕🐕, thank you for this mapping of the idea of quietude... ...it is very complete... ...very perfect... ...like some perfect storm of calm

Gorgeous. It’s something really different, after being used to many cello versions where the bass note of each group of 8 notes is often highlighted.

The first two bars, so sweet and piano, conjure the impression of something coming from far away. I loved that effect.

@@danwolfe9087 well - you have a point as far as the effect on the piano as opposed to cello: the 2-octave jump up between E flats is a nightmare for a cellist but a breeze to a pianist so what sounded like a struggle upward becomes the smoothest possible “grace” flowing down upon us. This movement, just like the first movement of Brandenburg 6 in Bb which I transcribed for piano duet, sounds much better on the piano.🙏

I absolutely mean no disrespect at all with this question. I just really don't know and would like to know! Isn't it quite straightforward to arrange a piece from cello to piano? From an ignorant point of view, I would just plainly translate each note. Is there anything more to that? Anyways, I love the original suites and I very much appreciate this arrangement. thanks

Thank you, you are absolutely right, especially compared to my Brandenburg Duets transcription which took over 2 years, this is straightforward: every note of 36 movements - the score is 124 pages - with only a few adjustments for length of sonorities, double/triple stops (chords) and tempi.

YEAH! :) And I have noted that the famous arrangements by Joachim Raff (Leipzig and Winterthur: J. Rieter-Biedermann, n.d.[1870]. Plate 620a. ) kind of destroys the beauty of these pieces by adding a left hand harmonization. There are places where the piano player may add some notes (bass or higher) but those passages are rare, and even not necessary. But then again, there are only a few movements which are more straight to play on piano than this one. The sarabandes definitely demand work. I have made an arrangement of the Suite no.1 in G where I find it beautiful to play in octaves and add bass notes here and there. I think it works (NOT in the first movement).

Because of diminutive stature one sits higher to facilitate placement of weight touch I think. :)

I prefers the piano sonorities because the cello can sound lugubrious in the liower registers.
