im from Sydney originally and USyd student of 198! recently there with my youngest who has now applied for Visual Arts, and you both described Sydney spot on! particularly the scene and the vibe. well done! my motto if you love something something good will come out. take a leap! Elon Musk did that and look at where he is now!

I’m nervous to pay thousands of dollars for something that may not benifit me in the long run, I love art and would like to persue that as a career but what are the actual chances of getting a job in this industry?

I did a visual arts undergraduate degree 30 years ago and have never been out of work, sure it's less secure than some other careers like teaching, law or medicine (and less lucrative) but I know people with marine biology degrees who can't get work in the field but no one says don't study biology. I know people with marketing degrees that took 2 years to get a job in the field - no one says don't study marketing. Critical thinking is a really important part of a visual arts degree, it's really good training for management because you are planning your own projects, seeing things through and pivoting when things don't go to plan. I think we would have a better society if more people studied the arts! By the way in my adult education classes, I sometimes teach lawyers who hate their jobs, If you love art - do it!
