I remember talking to a schoolmate about the Guess Who and he asked me if I meant the Who. I said no, the Guess Who. He hadn't heard of them. I woulda let it go but this was in the early 80's in Vancouver.
BTO knew how to rock and Randy Bachman, an original member of The Guess Who, is a genius. Like you said along with other BTO tunes is perfect for driving with volume up!👍🏻❤️🥁🎸🎤
Great Canadian band, overlooked and not in the Rock Hall another unforgivable snub. Just saw Randy with his son along with new band members. Great show. Keep Rocking!
Randy Bachman's 1957 orange Gretsch guitar was stolen 45 years ago in Toronto. It was found last year in Japan. A musician had bought it from a vintage guitar dealer not knowing it had been stolen. Randy went to Japan last week where there was a ceremony at the Canadian Embassy where he was given the guitar back to him (he gave the Japanese musician a replacement) and he performed at the embassy.
This was my husbands favorite song in high school back in 1973. He even saw BTO in concert a few times. Almost 50 years later and he still listens to them.
Excellent, passion filled and incisive reaction! Like how you applied the song's basic concept to today's circumstances with people not able to manage self control over their emotions.
Randy Bachman was part of "The Guess Who" & then went on to have a solo career with BTO. Both were great Canadian rock bands. BTO had a lot of great songs in the 70's such as "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", "Takin' Care Of Business", "Hey You", "Roll On Down The Highway", "Lookin' Out For #1" etc.
@@kathybwell .. yes, he was a founder member. Ironically he quit The Guess Who after he had a clash with later addition Burton Cummings - then he and Burton mended fences and still get together now to perform their magical hits.
This has always been my favorite song by BTO growing up. The vocals, the riff and the driving bass are fantastic. And it's rare that a voice this gravelly has that much range. The high pitched screams give me goosebumps.
Me too … goosebumps! Also, his live performance at the Roseland in 2011 (?) when he was in his late sixties - as great as his live performance in 1973. The growling and howling are still there, and his stage presence too! I do wish that in both videos they had focused on him when he was howling, tho ..
Harri, I listened to an interview with Randy Bachman and he said that in 1972 BTO was driving down to New Orleans' Mardi Gras for a concert when some semi-truckers decided to play games with them on the highway by boxing them in. When they caught up with them at the next truck stop, the guys from BTO button holed the truckers and demanded to know who they thought they were and what they were doing. The truckers said they were just having some fun on the highway (?) and the Randy should "just let it ride." That is where the song title comes from. LOL! In New Orleans BTO shared their dressing room with none other than the Doobie Brothers! Randy was sitting there working out the guitar part for "Let It Ride" and Tom Johnston liked what he was hearing so much that he adopted it and came up with "Long Train Running" for their 1973 "The Captain and Me" album. Bet that's what you were trying to sort out, eh? 👌😉😎
Great info! I had also heard the tale about the origin of “let it ride”. It makes sense now that Tom Johnson used Randy’s rhythm for Long Train Running - I have heard Tom’s rhythm strumming style described as “percussive” - which fits Randy’s rhythm guitar on this song too.
@@ingfig1 Randy said in another interview way back in the 1970s that when he formed BTO there were a couple of bands he wanted them to attain to the level of rhythm of; the Doobie Brothers and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Pretty high praise! 👌💘😎😉
Fred Turner’s growling and howling singing voice is so different to his speaking voice! He said that in between gigs he loves to spend time with his family and to wash and polish his 5 old cars …
Always loved BTO ever since they first came out. January 1974. This is one of their biggest hits. I know you've listened to a few of them. Have you reacted to ROLL ON DOWN THE HIGHWAY or HEY YOU yet?
I agree. he really has some great drumming. It seems as if he didn't do much with his playing talent after BTO. It's a shame he didn't move on to some other rising bands after that. There was a lot of family legal fighting over band naming rights and such.
I agree with you - that drumming was wonderful. The drummer in the original 1973 line-up (and on this recording) was Robbie Bachman, one of Randy’s brothers.
The dude who found Randy’s guitar used facial recognition software to find the guitar! And he volunteered for the task after learning that Randy’s beloved Gretsch had been stolen and that Randy was still pining for it after more than 4 decades. The story was told by Randy in an interview and the story was also reported by journalists at the time.
@@surlechapeau I checked Wikipedia just now, LOL, its Bachman. Plus I checked this live version; still Bachman; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ybtl9qVFAjc.html Personnel: (Wiki) Randy Bachman - lead guitar, lead vocals Tim Bachman - second lead guitar, backing vocals Fred Turner - bass, backing vocals Robbie Bachman - drums, percussion Norman Durkee - piano
Yahoo!! My favourite BTO song. Such a gritty superb rock song. Instruments out of this world. Randy who played with Burton Cummings in the Guess Who, both are celebrated Canadian greats. Thanks Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You’ve done it now Harri. Randy Bachman , who was a fantastic guitarist in his own right, was previously part of the Guess Who (American Woman, These Eyes,, etc etc). He left the Guess Who for many reasons and formed Bachman Turner Overdrive. As part of BTO they charted with several hits. When he was with the Guess Who, he and Burton Cummings (also a songwriter, vocalist and musician)had a volatile relationship that was often referred to as an ongoing soap opera. Long story short, around 2005-2007, they toured together as Bachman Cummings. I saw them in concert as a duo and have seen each as a solo act. Two geniuses, which may explain the rancorous history. They had concerts scheduled for 2020-21 but they were cancelled due to Covid. Hope to see them soon as they are each fantastic artists. Thanks for the BTO reaction. 😊👍
I'm thinking you're talking about Long Train Runnin' by the Doobie's. Both have a killer baseline! Those of us who came up in the 70s can lay claim to the greatest music of all! Thanks for taking me back to the Vidalia Strip on many hot Georgia nights with the windows rolled down and 98Q cranking out BTO, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, CCR, ZZ and CDB....yeah we had it all. ~ Lesa
Harri ! I think you're almost due an honorary Canadian Citizenship by now. Well done sir. Two other BTO songs for your consideration - Blue Collar and Rock is my Life (and This is My Song) - both a different display of this bands talents. Carry on Bro - eh ?
Fantastic, powerful rock from Winnipeg, BTO delivered (just as you said) great driving music: "Roll On Down the Highway" is just such. "It's Over" is a BTO deep cut that plays nice and loud too!
Love Let It Ride but please, please Blue Collar next! Their masterpiece. You wouldn't think they do great jazz but Randy Bachman is a huge jazz fan with some great chops! Blue Collar, Lookin' Out for Number One (maybe more country jazz fusion) by BTO and Undun by the Guess Who (bossa nova). It'll show you a very different range to their more well known songs, and may very well surprise you it's the same group!
Oh, absolutely... this guy gets it 100%. FUn fact: it is a law in Canada that if you are taking an extended road trip in our great country, longer than three hours, you must have BTO blasting on the radio. Canadian Mounties will stop all foreigners and politely issue them a "Greatest Hits" CD courtesy of the federal government and introduce you to a couple of stiff rye & gingers while you rock out by the roadside Hell, after a few, the RCMP constable may convince you to come out to their kids' hockey game. You'll go home with the love of denim clothing, gravel in your boots, the smell of the Jack Pine on your skin, the taste of cool, pure lake water in your mouth, and the northern wind calling your name. One cannot drive from Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario to Canmore, Alberta without hearing this song or this band a dozen times.🥃
Not certain but I believe lead singer is Fred Turner. Very unique sound, one of those songs I love everything about it. Probably out in 74. A classic, sooooo good!!!!
Yep it’s Fred Turner who actually wrote the song too. Story tells that Randy was trying to sing lead on it and that just wasn’t working, so Fred took a turn - and wow!
Yes!! Love my Canadiana…check out the Guess Who, Randy Bachman was in that, then a dive into Burton Cummings from The Guess Who, both had successful careers after GW. Randy Bachman has a show on CBC Radio that is incredible… Vinyl Tap 🇨🇦
Got pulled over for speeding last year for the first time in decades, with this song cranked up in the car. Learn from my mistake. Don’t listen in the car. 🚓🚓🚓 My 2nd fav BTO song after “Blue Collar”.
Soundtrack of my youth. I believe the song was released in 1973. Thank you for covering this and I enjoy the fact that you appreciated this song. Keep up the good work.
It is IMO their most amazing and bestest song and esspecialy the one live done later in years at Roseland . Fantastic. They increased the quality of it. Masterpiece. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rnIjkIx1Qww.html
It was a huge hit. They were big in their day but still underrated. I watched a show with Randy Bachman and he said their riff came before the Doobie Brothers.
you want other cool BTO songs?? Sooooo many!!! Rock is my life and this is my song Heartaches Blue Moanin' Take it like a Man Roll On Down The Highway Hey You Life Still Goes On, But I'm Lonely
Sir, believe the Doobie Bros.' song you're thinking about may be "Long Train Running". Now, this BTO song is SERIOUS rock 'n' roll! If you haven't already, sir, you may want to check out their "Takin' Care Of Business" & "Hey You". Hey, you can always count on BTO for some bangin' music! Thanks for rockin' this one, sir!
That’s the great thing about living in Canada, we can hear all the world’s music but if the world doesn’t want to hear ours, well, that’s their loss...and a pity.
I saw BTO IN '88. It was at a hole-in-the-wall dive in town. The show was delayed and the crowd was getting antsy. Randy Bachman goes up to the bar, orders a beer and onion rings and DARED anybody to try to rush big boy thru his food. Nobody did The album "Not Fragile" is a must have.
There is a recent story where Randy Bachman, after 40+ years, will be reunited with his stolen guitar he played on most/all the Guess Who and BTO recordings and live shows. It some how ended up in Japan where he is travelling to to retrieve it. Luckily the existing owner knew what he had and was kind enough to do the right thing 🎸
The story is told by Randy Bachman himself on the Vinyl Tap series. The Japanese musician who had bought the guitar from a vintage dealer was in his thirties and had nothing to do with the theft of the guitar some 45+ years back - and being honorable, he agreed to return it to Randy, on condition that Randy source another exactly the same! So Randy went to some lengths to source another Gretsch with consecutive serial number (made in same batch by same craftsman) which he presented on stage like a hostage swap!
Funny thing, Bachman Turner Overdrive can no longer tour as that because someone who is neither Randy Bachman nor Fred Turner owns the name and the record company that owns the name refuses to let them use it on tour. Also, I would highly recommend, should you be able to get at the podcast version, Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap, which is a show where he plays music and just talks about songs, songwriting and tells stories about people he's met in the business. It's a really really good show. I think it's got way better sound quality on the radio, but the only radio broadcasts are in Canada, so you'd have to settle for the podcast version.
Harri , you really have to check out American Women Live at the Paramount . Randy B. (Singing) Is with the Guess Who playing giutar on it. One of the best live albums OAT. Although totally underrated.
As I mentioned Randy's playing guitar with Kirt Winter . And the guitar solo in this version is one of the best and Burtons voice is amazing with all his "scatting" and some great mouth harp. This version of the song is best. And if you haven't heard it before, please give it a listen.
BTO came along when teenagers danced at the high school gym. BTO didn't put out much dance music, for example, "Let it Ride." Usually, it was the "tough guys," who listened to BTO, not the girls. That's where the big miss happened. BTO didn't appeal to the girls, so they didn't stay around long.
