Their best songs of what kids call "bangers" are two songs on Not Fragile by Blair Thornton, Givin It All Away and Free Wheel in.

Specifically Randy Bachman. (He left Guess Who in the middle of their big US tour. Later turned to his hometown friend, Neil Young for advice on starting over, which led to BTO) Randy has a weekly radio broadcast in Canada called “Vinyl Tap”. He plays all kinds and vintages of popular music, and tells great stories. Worth checking out.

The story behind this song is (more or less) that, while the band were on the highway, their vehicle got hemmed in by a couple of 18-wheelers. They caught up with the drivers at a truck stop, and confronted them about it. The drivers' reaction was like, "Hey, it's cool. Everything's fine; no one got hurt. Just let it ride." And a song idea was born. So, Andy, your mention of getting into a fight at a truck stop was closer than you might think. And con-grad-ulations, bud!

As I read the lyrics along with the song, it sounded like a man whose girl took him for granted. He's ready to hit the road. He wanted to know how she would feel if he did the same thing to her. The tension seems to escalate as he asks her, try try, try, would you let it ride (if I did that to you)?

I think Let it Ride will get better than a B, and I think it's a better cut than Takin Care of Business. Did you ever love a song that just got so much air play you got tired of it and started to dislike it?
@metalmark65
@metalmark65 3 года назад
I think Let It Ride is a fine start but when you know the band's catalog you start thinking "biggest hit" versus favorite songs. I like Not Fragile and Roll On Down The Highway better than Takin' Care, but I'd want someone who never heard them before to hear the biggest songs first. There's a reason why they are hits.
@Jalahr77
@Jalahr77 3 года назад
IMO, Takin Care of Business may be their most popular song, but by no means their best. It's one of those songs that you can get tired of easily. Have to get into some deeper cuts to get to the good stuff like "Flat Broke Love", "Four Wheel Drive", "Not Fragile", and "Roll On Down The Highway". If you want to do a popular radio song, then at least do "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet".

@@danhunt1830 exactly, and according to Randy it was a warm-up song for them, never to be played in public. So they create an album of music and the agent or label pops by to hear what they have so far and after a few songs asks "anything else?" "we need a hit single". With nothing else to offer the band tongue and cheek plays the "joke" warm up song and the label says "there's your hit single" and they were exactly right. Another of Canada’s great contributions to Rock. Bachman tells the origin story of this song. They were early in their career and driving from show to show when they encountered some road rage from a group of truck drivers. The band followed them into a truck stop to confront them when they were intercepted by another trucker who witnessed everything. He told the band to not get too serious about it and ‘let it ride’.

It just dawned on me why I enjoy this channel. Over the last 10-20 yrs I’ve grown so tired of “classic rock” that I grew up on in the 70s. This channel forces me listen to these classics with renewed focus - on lyrics and music, etc. And watching A&A’s enthusiasm doesn’t hurt. Thanks for re-introducing these songs to us old folk. I’m thinking Lil Feat would be a nice follow up to BTO.
