Bachmann Class 37 - Worth It?

There's a plethora of manufacturers to chose from when you are in the market for a Class 37. My choice finally landed on the latest Bachmann offering, product code 35-302, still in English Electric Type 3 guise. Many people will argue this choice, but do I give in? Is the model deserving of the berating it gets?

Bought at THE Harburn Hobbies??… You mean to tell me THE Flying Scott was in MY home city, at my favourite model shop, around the corner from my flat - and I had NO idea? The universe truly is cruel…

What a happy coincidence that your model looks just like the real one from the photograph. Truly amazing.

And I really love the snow scene, something that I'm thinking of doing to my layout. Mark.

We are fussy aren’t we? I haven’t bought new for years, til we all go on (strike) used mode the prices will continue to push extortionately upwards, a bells and whistles second hand loco on eBay or from a trader in excellent condition can be bought for less than £200. Love your presentation, totally agree with your rant at dumming down logos, ‘M&S’ an obvious one….. Darren

Like you I mostly buy second hand. I do occasionally buy new, but almost always old stock at big discounts. A couple of exceptions: 1) I recently bought a Pecket 'Bear' direct from Hornby which was on offer and I got a further 10% discount so it was £80. I also got a further £8 worth of reward points off my next purchase. 2) Hornby's new streamlined P2, the Hornby Club version 'Thane of Fife' rather than 'Lord President'. The RRP is £199.99 rather than £254.49. In reality due to the 10% discount these are £180 and £229 respectively so I'm saving £50 by getting Thane of Fife rather than Lord President. £180 is still a fair sum, but I also got reward points worth £27, so if you include those it works out at £153 inc P&P. I decided in this case it was worth buying new as even when the stream lined P2s start appearing on the second hand market there's a good chance they'll still be more than I paid new.

Nice loco and layout yes I think being able to fit crew and a decoder should be much easier than it is with bachmann.Accurascale have made it very easy to fit crew and also there is a removable section of roof so you can access the decoders very easily

Just typing this as I'm half way through but have bachmann made a 37 that's too clever? I have 37 025 which was one of the last of the old toolings and that's good enough without the need for the fancy upgrade version.

IMPORTANT - watch for issues with the AS class 37 - beautiful but - certainly mine went back - check out Chadwick’s video before buying !

Both the splitcode and central headcode can be 37/0, the /0 had lots of variations within its subclass. I've also got a new 37 (Accurascale tho) but got one on the other end of the timeline, (Europheonix /6).

I know the plu22 standard is arraigned for specific functions to be on specific pins. I’m guessing that the standard is not quite fully standardised. I always thought 21mtc was a better standard, but no one will ever agree for the standard as there are multiple (6 pin, 8 pin, 21mtc, next 18, and plu22). It strongly motivates hard wiring to avoid this nonesense!

I think the Bachmann 37's are worth it when on sale. I was able to get mine on sale from Rails of Sheffield for 80p less than accurascales RRP.

I like the Bachmann 37, but they are kinda overpriced, and it is silly that you don’t get all the features. I understand not having the spinning fans to some extent, as if you had those on analog then the fans would run faster as you move the loco speed up, which wouldn’t be realistic, and it would also draw more current from the motor, which would slow it down and make double heading difficult. What I don’t understand is why you don’t get some of the lighting functions and the tinted windscreen, especially with the high price. The real problem is, Accurascale also make a Class 37, which is slightly more detailed, and has more features, yet it costs less. Then again, the Bachmann model is not bad by any means, and I could definitely see myself picking one up. Regarding the decoder, I think with these really high prices we have been seeing from Bachmann recently, I can’t see why we couldn’t have the analog version at the price it is currently sold at, but include the windscreen, a DCC non-sound model for a bit more that has a Bachmann decoder, plus the addition of the rotating fans, and then the sound model, which costs the same as the standard sound model, but includes all the features. None of the extra additions with this model cost much to make, and seeing as this model is already over £200, I don’t think it would have hurt to keep the prices as is, but include all of the features.

Hi, I'm in a dilemma, please help me please, do I buy the new bachmann class 37, in BR Green, of course, at the price of £195.95, or do I buy the older bachmann class 37 in BR Green in New Condition for £99.50. Many Thanks. Mark.

Just happened to check my channel tab when this was posted, haha! The older 37 is still a perfectly good model, though it may suffer from unknown issues under the hood the seller didn't tell you about. A new 2022(?) Class 37 would be a guaranteed clean slate. If there wouldn't be any losses should you have to return the older 37, I would say go for that. If money is not an issue and/or you want to guaranteed out-of-the-box performer, go for the new one.

Wow, mmmm' I'm going for the older one. I'm fitting the Hornby HM7000 bluetooth sound decoder, and the stay alive,so all is good. Thank you so much for your help. Stay Safe and Well. Mark.

@@FlyingScott the ex-GER mainline runs between London Liverpool Street and Norwich and passes through Chelmsford. If heading south then the missing letter should be A, which typically represented the London area on all regions.

The new Bachmann class 37 is a very good model but the Accurascale class 37 has lot better features and detailing and is excellent value for money ddc sound £260 compared to the Bachmann 37 which retails around £330 its a no brain error to go for the Accurascale class 37
