The quality of this locomotive seems quite lacking for the price. The valvetrain area and wheels is pretty lackluster, but it’s otherwise a quite interesting locomotive. Looks very American in design, doesn’t it?
@SamsTrains

I agree - this needed to have been better quality or cheaper.... but it's just a rip-off at the moment! It does look very American-esque actually! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

wkruit1 - I know it’s a British locomotive based on the 8F. That being said, the resemblance this and the 8F’s have to some of the Porter-built Mikados and Consolidations from the late 10’s to the mid 20’s is pretty remarkable, particularly around the cab and firebox and from some angles, the resemblance is downright uncanny! Hence why I said it looks very American in design. :)

I have one of these, the price of 115 pounds is very reasonable for the quality and heck I would have paid the 170 pounds. Sam'sTrains I must fully disagree with your opinion, this isn't some cheap Hornby Hall class its a quality model that leaves most of Hornby's range behind (J15 is an example of a Hornby model being as high quality as this). Your paying for the quality running, not paintwork. I sometimes wonder about the priorities of the members of this hobby, they praise a great paint job that runs poorly but puts down a nice and accurate paint job with a great runner. Running quality > paint work. That said mine doesn't make the grinding noise yours is making so ....

Four years later I saw this model by chance in display in a model shop. I came away and it's shear beauty pecked at my brain for a week. I was lucky to see it was still there as it was the last one. It is now mine. It was your review that convinced me to buy it. It is one of the most stunning looking locos I have bought. It's very powerful pulling 21 wagons with ease. After a while that motor noise disappeared altogether. I can't wait for the karki green WD version. Thank you for the encouraging review.

Most wartime locomotives weren’t really ones for looking good. During times of war, railways were often regulated to only bare-bones equipment, pre-existing equipment, or very blandly painted equipment. The WD 2-8-0 is actually very accurate to the prototype.

For the history part it would have been cool if you included the amount that were loaned to the NS (Dutch railways). In the Netherlands they were used as mixed traffic engines because most of the dutch locomotives were destroyed during the war. The NS had 237 over the course of 1945-1955 (i think) but not that amount at the same time. Pretty soon the crew of these locomotives complained about smoke getting into the cab and that lead to the funnel being extended which is pretty cool. Bachmann actually made models of these and i own 1. A little extra: The NS had 2-10-0 variants and 1 is preserved in the Dutch railway museum in Utrecht. The loco is named Longmoor.

Wow Sam, this is the first time that I’ve seen one of the viewers polls be wrong! There were no less than 4 dean goods in service with the LMR, and there were countless Austerity shunters. There were no LBSCR H1’s employed on the railway but there were a couple of LBSCR L1 4-4-2Ts running. @steamandsmoke97
@steamandsmoke97 5 лет назад
One thing that irritates me to no end about all Bachmann Engines with external valvegear whether it be Walschaerts or Baker is that on one side of the engine, the eccentric crank is set properly for the correct valve timing, BUT, it's set the exact opposite on the other side, which of course in real life would cause the engine to literally fight itself if not tear itself apart. Also, since this model has Walschaerts, I also noticed the Expansion Links have been installed backwards in the link trunnions. You can tell by looking at the direction that the curvature of the link is facing, and the location of the tail piece where the eccentric rod attaches. Bachmanns notoriously do not pull well, and as you stated everything is rubbish internally/mechanically including the decoders. The Oxford Rail N7 completely blows this thing out of the water all the way around in both quality and price!
@cleo6686
@cleo6686 5 лет назад
The eccentric crank (return crank) is off by 45 degrees - it should be facing backwards slightly with the main rods up and forwards slightly with rods down (classic view). I think the expansion link is on backwards as well. Check it out when he runs it slowly.
@steamandsmoke97
@steamandsmoke97 5 лет назад
@@cleo6686 You just repeated everything I said. I know the exact angles, I work on full sized steam locomotives for a living. It's actually closer to around 36 degrees in either direction from the center of the axle if checking the angularity between the main crankpin and the eccentric crank pin as it's not a perfect isoceles triangle. In fact it can't be otherwise the valve travel would be almost equal to the piston travel and that's ridiculous. BUT, the relationship between the main crank pin and eccentric crank pin, if using the axle as the vertex of said right triangle and you're measuring from that, needs to be 90 degrees, the lead variable is provided by the combination lever. It all depends on what you're going off of to calculate from. I already mentioned the expansion link as well. Thanks for being a Parrot, do you want a cracker?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 лет назад
haha - I love the idea of an engine fighting with itself and self destructing - to be honest, that feature is well in-line with the quality of the rest of the model! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I agree that for £169.95 this would have been a non-starter for me. I love the WD Austerity 2-8-0/2-10-0 Locomotives, as they were built at Vulcan Foundry, Newton Le Willows, near my home town of St.Helens. I have actually just bought the Locomotive at a great price brand new - £109 from Rails of Sheffield on 8 August 2019. A problem for me at 73 will be fitting the nameplates!! I will get a friend to do that I think as my hands are a bit arthritic.

A good review sam as always, I must admit I prefer this loco in BR colours plus loads of grime as I remember them so well that way. You knew they were coming usually by the clank of the big end lol. It's a fine livery for a military engine though and Gordon of the NYMR looks good in it too. As for prices i wonder were it's going to end as people cant just keep paying silly prices for sometimes mundane quality.

What needs to be remembered here is the Bachmann wd came out many years ago, just before Dcc sockets were fitted as standard in rtr Bachmann models. Okay for context for American viewers about the price... 180 UK pounds equals about $240 US dollars. For around $240, you can buy just about any Bachmann steam locomotive with DCC and sound that's not articulated. BUT that at the dealer price, not the MSRP and without shipping and handling. Bachmann tried to charge $330 for their Pacifics, J class, GS4 and Streamlined K4 when the first came out, (250 UK pounds according to google), but after a couple of weeks they all dropped under $200. Also for the UK guys, American Bachmann is about Honrby Railroad quality 80% of the time. Super light weight chassis that don't track well and don't pull worth a shit, and sounds worse than TTS in sound quality in all but their premium models. If you want a good running, good sounding engine out of the box, most turn to Broadway limited who charge anywhere between $250 usd to $700 usd depending on the model and its rarity.

I have to agree with all you said. I find the blue unique and, for that, it stands out from others. That said, they painted everything one color, outside the wheel drives and box. For the MSRP, they should have done more color distinctions with the pipes or trim. The tender also seems a bit more cheaply done. Something that wins for its uniqueness, but loses on the details a bit.

LMR 600 Gordon (2-10-0) LMR 90774 (2-10-0) both under restoration No. 1931 was saved from being scrapped by the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, who ran it in SJ condition for several years. In 1993 work began on restoring the locomotive to more or less original condition, as "British Railways No. 90733", one higher than the last BR ex-WD Austerity 2-8-0, 90732 Vulcan. Incidentally, one engine did very briefly carry the BR number 90733 as ex-WD Stanier Class 8F No. 48773 (also preserved) was incorrectly numbered that upon its entering into BR stock in 1957, after being mistaken for an Austerity 2-8-0 type. As of July 2018, it is being stripped for an overhaul.

Besides UK, they served in Netherlands, Italy ( Gr.FS 737xxx) Egypt, Palestine, Kowloon-Canton Rwy ( HongKong) and several other countries. Too bad it is OO ( 1/76) rather than HO (1/87). It will fit in a old ( 1970s) Italian R-R layout ( 1/80 scale).

Ahhh the Oxford rail N7 is back in its deserved 1st place, was wondering what had happened to it as I just watched the Dapol B4 0-4-0 review and it was put into 1st place and there was no sign of the N7 on the list. And no you can't blame the New Year drinking on this one...lol. Anyhoo you picked up a sub from the Oxford Rail review, looking forward to viewing some more of your past as well as future reviews...Cheers.

The WD tooling is fairly old I think, which is why a lot of the features are lacking. There are not a lot of people who model the LMR or will justify getting anything based on the line. This is probably why the RRP was so high in the first place, it probably should have been made a bachmann collectors club model.
@SamsTrains

Yeah I think it is - and I agree, it's a shame that people are exploited in that way! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Well this one has sparked some controversy in the comments. I believe that you have made some fair comments given the price it was meant to be though I couldn’t hear the noise it was making. I was close to buying the N gauge version as it looks interesting none the less and was in a pack for less than the price of the OO.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 лет назад
haha it certainly has! My mic picks up very little of the ambient sound, since it's right next to my mouth, but trust me - it's a noisy one! Supposedly the N version is actually better than this! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

It looks interesting and appeals to me despite the shortcomings. Don't like the fact that it has no pickups on the tender, don't much care about cab detail, bearings would be a good idea but . . . it is an austerity locomotive!! Bit of a high price for what it is I think

What are cylinder drain cocks Sam. Also what brand and railway are those 4 door grey gondola wagons. There's an editing error from 20:25 to 20:44
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 5 лет назад
They're activated when the train is stationary to drain the cylinders, to stop water building up! Water can't be compressed, so efficiency takes a massive hit if there's water condensed in the cylinders! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@@SamsTrains Yes, it was a limited edition of 1000 units in Hong Kong red and green, for the Kowloon Canton Railway. WD 2-8-0 No. 21. It is in a handsome wood box. the loco has much greater detail also, than the later edition that you have, but still the same basic loco.... keep up the good work!
