I have been there many times. One time, in the middle of winter, snow on the ground and freezing, i came upon two elderly homeless men living within the cemetery. One had been a boxer and was 'punch drunk' and the other called himself 'Cannonball' and recited the most wonderful poetry he had written. I said he needed to write that down, he said then people would steal his words. Needless to say i came home without my scarf, gloves and jumper.
Ghosts are one of those things that until you experience them for yourself you will always be sceptical BUT when (if) you DO experience them you then realise that there are things in this world that we will probably never understand. It is quite an unnerving explosion inside the brain when you come to realise that ghosts are indeed very real. It was the most disturbing experience I have ever had.
@@popularguygaming My grandfather on my mother's side died 42 years ago now. He smoked a very distinctive smelling tobacco in his pipe. Ten years ago my mother died & I was very upset. VERY upset. I had been out shopping one day & when I returned home my house was filled with the strong smell of tobacco smoke, HIS tobacco smoke. I just sat down & cried & said "Thank you, Grandad". I still grieved my mother but I was really fine after that. He came back to tell me that everything was okay.
Implying that the ‘holy ghost/spirit and angels are only in your head? Proof please. Don’t discredit someone’s else’s beliefs lest you fear being judged foolish yourself.
Since you live in the UK and have visited so many cemeteries there, you have most likely been or seen many of my ancestors there. My past includes the Bacon family.. I love hearing your calming voice and thoughts in these videos. Keep up the great work….remembering our pasts..
Hello interesting fact .Many railings and gates were removed during World War II, ostensibly to be melted down in a morale-boosting drive to help the war effort. The reality was that the iron could not be reused and more often than not it was simply dumped at sea. - This was done to make everyone feel like they were doing something, the reality was , utterly useless amount of effort, done for no good to anybody anywhere. A bit like clapping in covid. Very interesting video, thanks for braving the weather and sharing.
I've been to Greyfriars Kirkyard at several occasions and will return on my next stay in Edinburgh. I have to admit, that this cemetery has an atmosphere of its own, especially when your're close to McKenzie's tomb. I am always interesdet, how other people feel around this place and what they experienced there.
This place is as creepy as hell, I would go there but not on my own and definitely in the daylight hours lol! Thanks for the tour, these are fascinating places. I definitely believe in the paranormal, had a few personal experiences myself to not do so.
If I recall right, the Black Mausoleum is in fact a seperate mausoleum inside the Covenanters' Prison. Most of the scratch, bruise, or faint incidents are said to have happened there.
Maybe someone needs to pray for the departed. Maybe they are trying to get someone’s attention to be able to get out of purgatory although my own feelings and contemporary family’s religious traditions don’t allow for that I am not going to discount it. I couldn’t know everything about the spiritual realm.
I heard the metallic sounding construction noises, and became concerned that old George MacKenzie👻 ☺was tapping on his dome! Thanks for selecting Greyfriars, its one of my favorites!
Beautiful in a macabre sense. The housing butted against the monuments are crazy. The window between 2 monuments blew my mind a bit. Wonderful tour. Thank you!
In a place as ancient and heavily populated as Edinburgh, people built wherever they could. Even if right adjacent to burials! You'll see the same thing in parts of New England.
I've seen ghosts since i was a little girl. They never scared me. The last one i saw was our dog when i was growing up. I saw her before my dad passed away in a car accident. She came to escort my dad to the other side.
You mentioned that a lot of raillings were removed during the war but fun fact, a lot of the metal gathered wasn't even used as there was an abundance of it collected but it wasn't mentioned til years later due to it being a way to keep people's spirits up thinking that they were contributing to the war effort.
Yeah, oddly enough you can't make Spitfires out of cast iron railings. I believe a lot of the metal they collected was eventually dumped in the North Sea,
Another awesome video Dan. The place was so eery but also beautiful in some way to me. Love the way you tell about the place. Would not go there at night. Looking forward to your next video. Love from Georgia USA
Cool beans! I’ve been thinking of that place recently for some reason and how magical it is. Ever since I was a kid and my Edinburgh-born grandfather told me the story of Greyfriar’s Bobby and I read my mother’s copy of the book. I went there in 1989 with my grandparents MacMillan and walked around the area and the kirk yard. Went back in early 90’s for the Festival and saw a wonderful play of “Daniel and the lions” performed in the kirk. Just remembered that. Loved it.
Surprise to see you round the corner from my flat. Hope you had a great time. Loads of other cemetery in the area, and would of been happy to take you.
John Adam is well known for his style of houses, sometimes you will hear about Adams fireplaces. Sandstone used to be a cheaper alternative and easier to shape but as you can see it doesn't last long.
Yeah i stopped watching that after the remark, got a sliver of his true self there, channels not for me. I'm male in his thirties and I don't understand why he would think that besides maybe the young romance parts, but why judge an entire franchise based on that!
My friend is the tour guide there. It's not the black mausoleum where the poltergeist is, that's a common mistake. It's actually in the covenanters prison.
I visited the Kirkyard a couple of years ago and found the place had a very gloomy doom laden atmosphere about it. I would never describe myself as psychic or sensitive to such things as I’ve visited many such places including Highgate, Brompton and Pere Lachaise cemeteries and found them equally fascinating but not depressing.
I was there a few years ago, but my group didn’t linger as long as you did. It was a unique feeling place. Higher slope because of all the bodies buried?!?! I could have spent much more time. Love mystical Edinburgh.
Hi 👋 I had a great aunt Jean Reoch who lived overlooking Greyfriers Kirkyard I remember visiting her many times when I was young, when I got bored of the adult conversation I would have a wander around the Kirkyard and then cross over to Chambers Street and have a good couple of hours in the Museum. Oh I wish I could go back and live it all over again those were the days. 🥃🥃🏴
What a beautiful cemetery 🪦. l loved visiting the kirk/ graveyard as a child and adult. There’s nothing more interesting and peaceful but to have a walk around and see all the different centuries of headstones. A lot of symbolism i. e pharaoh’s, skull and bones, cherubs, sun, angels and tall column on the headstones.
I’ve just discovered your channel..awesome thank you. You go where I’ll never have a chance, and I really appreciate your tours. Much love and respect from Canada.
I seen small Clips of video about this place but it wasn't this extensive. You are doing an amazing job at showing a lot more than what I've seen on other channels. Thank you, please keep it up.
I visited here with my mom and sister. We had no idea the history behind this place but we all love graveyards. Can’t say I felt anything uneasy, I was just in awe of how beautiful it is.
Thank you so much for the very interesting video. I’ve only ever seen bits of this place on other videos and never new it was so vast. I would love to go there someday because of your commentary ,knowledge , and facts. Good job and your voice kept my interest 😊
Oh you’d be fine. I’ve been there and it’s lovely. I did get creeped out at Linlithgow Palace exploring the ruin and heard a voice in my head say, “Get out!” So I did. Thought it best not to argue.
Love watching ur videos pal..... nothing better than watching these type of videos on a Sunday morning. I am fascinated with graveyards myself around Ireland and as I live in Dublin I go to glasnevin a lot there yesterday and I love how these places make me so alive. Keep up the good work greetings from Ireland, Stephen
Very interesting sculpture and architecture, so many shapes and forms telling a story! I cannot see the hourglass at 20:38 ! I find this walk relaxing.
In London, the old churchyards can be several feet above the bordering walks. Layers of burials over centuries, until the churchyards were closed and cemeteries were moved to the outskirts.
Not to be hyperbolic, but I'm not sure I've ever "felt" a place, though a video like this. I'm on Oahu in the pacific and feel like I'm looking into it. Hard to describe. You're a brave man.😅
Alot of people will not believe me but I live 20 minutes from Edinburgh, and before i knew this, its a well known fact that when you go into this Kirkyard/Graveyard, I was walking with my friends and I felt a smack on my face near my eye, and my friends turned around and asked what is it, and i told them i felt like i had just been smacked on the eye (without me knowing) by a ghost, my friends just laughed then they told me it was fact for centuries people have walked in the graveyard and had either seen spirits, or been pushed, or smacked on the face.
The Scottish band Goodbye Mr Mackenzie wrote a song about Mackenzie and also Deacon Brodie. Shirley Manson of Garbage used to sing and play keyboards in the band.
A very popular place for tourists and locals alike for a peaceful walk. So full of history and of course a lot of sadness. Thanks for a really nice video. I wonder how good those monuments would look if they were power washed!👻
I've always enjoyed the mystery and beauty of graveyards from a very young age. Living in Woodford Green Essex, and having Epping forest to wonder though......This place, however,is horrendous to me...a more sinister, ugly place I have yet to see anywhere else on my travels through life... A dreadful eyesore in every sense of the word.
sorry i missed the live stream, been busy lately!..wow, with it's dark history and obvious age, the place definitely creates it's own creepy ambiance for sure! enjoyed the tour, thanks Dan! see you on the next one 👍✌️☕
Great walk as always👍That place is very atmospheric 😱 it looks like even if it were sunny, ☀️it would still be spooky 👻would not like to be locked in there at night👀❤️🇨🇦
When the people erected these beautiful monuments for themselves, they didn’t know that that one day it all would be falling apart, and no one would remember them anymore.
Hi I'm new to your channel but I have watched and left likes to the videos iv watched On you latest video as you turned to face the black mausoleum you can hear someone exhale your talking as it happens Keep up the fantastic work 👍 👌
I'd be very careful around that building, I have encountered something which I'll not talk about on here. But basically what I'm trying to say is do not mess with the supernatural.
Also, given the history of that plot of land I'm surprised that the town council allowed apartment / flat construction so close to the church yard walls. Any ideas on this?
needs must lol and lbh just about any stretch of land in the world, esp one within a city like edinburgh with such a long history w various invasions and such, would have unfortunate histories
Been to this cemetry many times, iv never fully experienced scratches, pushed, but, it definitly gives u chills down the spine, whether that’s knowing the history, and expectations are high, I don’t know, but u certainly feel something, when u get close Loving these videos, reminds me many years ago, when I lived in Edinburgh, and how much I enjoyed walking around all these old cemeteries
Great upload, I loved Edinburgh when i visited many years ago, such a beautiful place. That stone masonry at 15:15 is astonishing, are there humans alive today with the skills to make these unique works of art? Great work DGW
I'm sorry that precious little dog, Bobby, was buried in that cemetery with such an evil force there. All they ask you to do is please don't rub his statue's nose. I've seen a video of a crowd inside the black mausoleum, and a lady got scratched and almost passed out. They quickly removed her from being inside the mausoleum. There's no way I'd ever get close to that mausoleum. I don't know if they stopped allowing groups to go inside of it or not anymore. There is pure evil and pure good in the spiritual realm, whether people want to believe it or not.
Doesn’t seem to bad this place. Nice for a picnic in the summer. Seriously though, if you feel uneasy, a 6th sense if you will, that something a little off. Then it probably is.
Some people find this place terrifying and there are some scary stories attached but I’ve never been creeped out by it. Being from Edinburgh, as a teen my friends and I would join tour groups most weekends but none of us experienced anything.
Another epic one this one definitely does have a gothic eerie haunted grim feel and look to it also reminds of around the Happy Potter time overall I absolutely loved this one
What a beautiful cemetery! Oddly enough, during the daytime it has a slight erie look and probably feel to it, so I can image how it would feel at night? I can imagine there's plenty of spirits waiting to be greeted. 👻👻
I went here in the seventies and took many photos i find cemeteries very peaceful to go round you look at the old names that are not used anymore. I took a picture of his masters grave with i looked at the photo there was a ghostly kind of shade in front of it
