Still Wakes the Deep is just based on Lovecraft's creations, I don't believe there's a deeper definition or look at the entity that takes over the rig. It simply is a "Great Old One" and it is not intended to be knowable or quantifiable. It has shape, but is not matter, type of deal.
In a way, this was giving me Amnesia Dark Descent vibes. Which is excellent, because the helplessness and fear you feel through the whole game makes for a really great atmosphere. No ‘happy ending’ for Daniel or Caz, but they both did what they needed to do. And the creatures in both games are awful abominations, surrounded by fleshy, ‘alive’ material coating the halls and floors. Still Wakes the Deep is very good. Short, sure. But I don’t think it needed to be very long. I do wish I knew more about the entity that took over the rig. Very curious.
After watching until the end, I believe blowing up the rig platform doesn't stop it, the way it's worming it's way to derick meaning there is whole infestation of that thing under the sea, in offshore platform like this the pipe goes down like kilometers deep and from the story I think they're still in drilling phase since they seem to hit something along the way, probably originally thought just a pocket, if what we seen at the rig is like that so massive organism? I believe we just see the tip of the iceberg, beneath the waves it's different story, I don't know if the cheap arse drilling company in 70's willing to install blowout preventor down there in the deep, even if they installed it I am not sure it's enough or up to the task to hold that thing sealed, from the ending it seems the blowout preventor is failing because oil keep on flowing and gas level is rising. I still think the best Caz should do is giving live testimony on how this thing work and try to survive rather than go down in a blaze of glory, from the ending it seems the gas already rising up to the rig so given time firing flare from afar maybe after finding something to get away seem to do the job as well of making things go boom. Rig this big probably have something that float even if it's sink, empty sealed container or large enough empty storage tank could float for quite sometime, pretty decent survival probability if Caz could find supplies while waiting the gas level rising.
This organisme live on oil pocket. Ever seen hole of hell on middle east? That how his home now turned into thanks to protagonis action. And from the early encounter, Finley said the first infection got splashed by oil and started freaking out and changed. That mean the protagonis already infected since he touch the sea water mixed with oil. Everyone else on the ship who touch the oil also already infected. They all stand no chance since the beginning of this.
I just notice The main menu is different from the one you started. There is the oil rig the first episode. after you beat the game, the oil rig is gone
Well if I am gonna take a guess i Which lovecraftian horror responsible here it's probably Leviathan or B moth, unlike Cthulhu which sleeping in the depths of the sea Leviathan is said buried under the continent, a creature so massive and have unending hunger when roused it is possible the drill bit hit Leviathan causing it's blood to spill and thuse creating this growth of meaty horror in the rig. It's definitely not Cthulhu the bit probably doesn't do much to leviathan but the spillage of its inky black blood still devastating and cause this anomaly.
