Back Leg Drive is Relative to Weight Shift Position
Should you drag your back foot in the baseball swing? You can, but you better make sure you are in the right position to do so.

Hey Ron! We need to consider the strong probability that the torque generated by the lower body happens as a result of mass (back leg) moving through space with the rear knee almost touching the rear of the front knee and the weight shifting back by virtue of getting to the outside of the front foot (before contact) combined with the velocity of the swing which equals power. Check Ruth, Foxx, Aaron, Thomas,. You're on the right track re 'dragging the back foot'. Don't be afraid of that. Check Field Goal kickers, Punters, Shot Putters...Look at their plant foot! We have been so conditioned to watch the push off vis a vis the back leg that we do not realize how important the front leg is re torque. Check Cano, Bauptista etc , almost all power hitters. They get to the outside of the front foot (not just for balance but also for power) Those who "stay back" ( best example of recent times was Jim Thome) are cheating themselves by leaving a portion of their mass back. That is one reason squish the bug was such a bad idea. Again! Study those Old Timers. That back leg was airborne! Some are subtle (Williams, Brett) but it happens.

which style do you find better overall for a more blended contact and power? donaldson s or harpers?

Between the two, I prefer Donaldsons pre-swing movements. The video of Harper was from a few seasons back. I think he has toned down the back leg action.

also how much weight do you put on having a wide stance? I've heard guys say if your short to go wider. I'm only about 5'10 or 5'11. but I base nearly what Kinsler and machado have there is not only much more comfortable, I make great solid contact and really drive the ball while staying balanced. widening up just screws everything up, nothing stays together I lose not only contact and power but body control as well.

If you mean stance as, before weight shift...I only like wide stances for no striders or players, like Big Papi, that have a pick up and put down in the same spot. I like that you are comfortable with your approach, don't change a thing. Thanks for the question!

thanks for the reply man, but yeah I worded that wrong. what I meant was at toe touch through contact, I'm not all that wide, everything works smoother and more efficient with a more stable base, that being a more narrow one for me
