I couldn't remember how long it had been since I last shot a video down on the local river. At first I guessed it was about a month and on checking I was astonished to discover the last video publication date for the river was the 7th June 2022! That’s knocking on for 3 months ago. Quite remarkable.
Today I got back!

Well it’s nice to have you back. Water levels have been low here in Northern Ireland too but now they’re picking up a bit. I love to hear you talking about different things always remember we can all learn a lot from you Thank you

Aye it's been a tough one for sure, feels like it's been shorter than normal, we were a bit spoiled in 2021, around here anyway. 😊

Fred, the fly to use that always gets a rise is the ducks dun tied by Alex Jardine, in my version I use a partridge soft hackle but apart from that it's the same and it has been catching all summer.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Yeah, soft hackle dries can be very effective and are more durable than CDC flies. 👍

Welcome back …Gee I missed the videos…never mind no fish to hand the filming and real experience is what I appreciate the most 👍👍

Thanks. What I try to do is engage with people with the continuous commentary and just show it as it is - and I most certainly do not always catch fish! Just an old duffer out with his fly rod! 😁

yes 2022 has been a year to write down to experience, nothing much to talk about but perhaps next year will compensate! Onward and upward for 2023! Great you are well Fred and just eased off due to the conditions, the right approach for me!

hi Fred, good to see you back on the river, I think we have all suffered the same thing apart from the southern chalk streams, one of my rivers has just about stayed ok and yesterday I had my PB grayling a whopping 2lb fish but the river is stuffed with small grayling and not many trout this year.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Well done, 2lb is a great grayling for sure. You just never know with fishing, every year is different. Who knows what next year will bring?

Glad to see you're back Fred. We've had a terrible drought here in Massachusetts U.S.A. Our wild trout streams have really been taking a beating since about the end of June. I've been fishing on our slow warm water rivers for other species. Not my favorite kind of fishing but I'm thankful it's an option in years like this. We're finally getting a couple days of heavy rain now so things should improve here. Good luck to you in the remainder of your season!
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Hi Dean and thanks for the comment. It's been really dry here, not a normal complaint for Scotland! You guys are lucky to have bass, bluegills and a wider range of warm water species to fish for, here in Scotland it's more limited, trout everywhere but other species are more limited, especially here in the north east. For most fly fishers it's more or less trout or nothing. Hopefully the last few weeks of the season will be better. 😊

I like videos like this, days when nothing's caught are part of what real fishing's about. I firmly believe that by and large, the only fish that get caught are the ones that want to get caught. That's what I tell myself, anyway.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Yeah, we don't always catch fish. 😊 I watch a lot of fishing videos and usually the fish are the part I find least interesting. I'm more interested in the river or lake and what the angler does and has to say.

I switched to polarised sunglasses and it makes a big difference in the glare.

Thanks for commenting. I use polarised glasses but they only help to some extent. Not much can cancel out those reflected clouds. 😊

Hi Bill. Just back from a week in Scone and the rain over the weekend will have helped the rivers. Fished the big loch on friday and it was very poor. East wind just killed the sport.

At 42 I find that seem to be as fit as when I was in my twenties.......I walked about 10 miles fishing an upland lake yesterday and was fine.......buts it's the day after that I realize I'm older! Aches and pains and can't recover as quick as when a young man.

Nice one Fred, we had a comment on our little forum from a chap who spent 6 hours on the Dart for a blank so it's the same everywhere it appears. I've been meaning to ask as you've known that river for many years have you seen a decline in upwings? They've been in short supply here this season, maybe the conditions but also part of a trend I'm afraid.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
We still get hatches of upwings Chris, but like most places they are not what they were. It's only when I go up and fish The Don or Deveron that I remember what hatches should be like. The local river is all on farmland so diffuse pollution with high nitrogen and phosphate levels don't help. The rivers that come off the Grampians - North and South Esks - have impressive hatches of a wide variety of bugs including impressive numbers of March Browns. I've never seen those on the local. The amount of duckweed on the river right now is incredible - never seen it quite so dense before on running water.
