As far as the fishing goes, I try to keep things "old school" not a lot of shouting, loud rock music and stuff like that. I also like to keep the videos short; I don't think anyone is going to be that interested in watching hours of me fly casting and not catching much. Just as in real life sometimes I catch, sometimes I don't. All I can say for sure is either way I enjoy it.
I think you did well to engage with the one that accepted the 16, Fred. When it's cold enough to make my hands cold I usually decided that trout weren't worth the discomfort! And now at this age? No chance. So cap's off to you for your perseverance. If there were grayling present that's different - fished for those on the Clyde and the Lanarkshire Avon and latterly on the Earn near Dunning. Lots of fun and sometimes - lots of fish too! Been quite a while for me from those days however... Nowadays if I can sit in a boat that does me fine - tramping up and down river banks is well into my yesterdays!
I really enjoy these early season days on the river even if I usually blank over the first few. That said the older I get the harder that pioneering spirit is to find. 😂😂
Just found your channel Fred. (shakes hands) I'm on your forum under another nom de plume, So nice to see a wee local burn being explored. We have one too but the only fish left by the bloody mink are bandies and very, very few of those. It used to be stocked annually when we had our town council so that's long passed to wild progeny only. I wonder if your wee water there might harbour a wee run of finnock through the summer into the back end of the season? Maybe so. Anyway wishing you plenty of years yet to explore these fun wee waters. Tight lines to you.
Oddly enough I have never seen a finnock in this burn yet the even smaller one at the south end of the town is known for them! Thanks for posting. By the way the forum is no more, closed just last week. 😊
First place I fished as a kid and the first place my kids have fished! We still go along here with a mepps spinner and a float rod never tried to fly fish it though
@@wildfisher after watching this I had to go there again and landed a salmon parr and seen a eel heading upstream both at the flood zone it’s made me wonder what other species are in there? Was amazed to find a salmon parr for a nice photo!
I still fish my little burn that I started on back in my youth. Hope I’m still able to at your age too. Very cool! What’s your thoughts on the wee glass rod? I’ve pondered over it a few times. Not overly fond of the bright orange but it does intrigue me as I’ve never used a glass one
@@gavinstuart6704 Yes they are. Why do anglers wet their hands before handling fish to take the hook out and release them back to the water.? I have watched salmon and seatrout returning to spawn for over fifty years and seen the marks on fish.
@@jamesmason8944 what are you talking about? Are you talking about what happening in this video? Because you just said the FISH are damaging THEMSELVES. Now your talking about fisherman handling fish which doesn't happen in this video.
@@gavinstuart6704 Fish have a mucoprotein slime coating over their scales to protect them. this acts as a defence against invasion by bacterial, parasitic and fungal pathogens. Biologically essential electrolytes necessary for osmoregulation are lost through breaks that occur in the slime coating, by breaks or abrasions and are readily attacked by disease organisms. The slime coating is the first line of defence. That is why people wet their hands before handling fish to try to prevent damaging this coating. Now to watch these fish battering themselves against rocks and not think of the damage they are doing to their protective coating and not be able to understand why I mentioned handling fish higlights a lack of joined up thinking with your reactionary comment.
Thanks for asking Richard. The season start right through April and into May was dreadful with cold winds and floods. I just found other things to do and have not got back into the fishing at all! Hopefully the spark will re-light soon! 😊😊
Hi TK and thanks for your comment. I'm fine it's just the terrible weather that has stopped me getting out fishing. I'm hoping to get out and do a new video this week. Keep checking back just in case. 😊
You've taken a battering up there, where I live in the Borders they are spending zillions on flood defences, which is basically a 10 foot wall on either bank for about two miles thro the town and its difficult to see the river, that should work lol. I wouldnt fancy living downstream tho.
The 15th is rapidly approaching and I have just given my tackle a good look over and ordered another couple of dozen flies. I don't really need them but a man can never have enough flies, just in case. Lol. Tight lines
Yes, the 15th is a week tomorrow! If the weather is OK I'll do my duty as tradition dictates and get out for an hour or two. It's not usually much good for the first two weeks or so on my local, but it's fine just getting out again after the long lay-off! I might even shoot some video. 👍👍
Hi Fred !...great to hear your voice again ...and belated Happy New Year wishes !!...yep, got a notification of your video...a truly beautiful Scottish winter season scene (plus very clear camera/drone work and great choice of music)...very enjoyable...thanks a lot...see you next time in March...get tying those flies for the new season! 😄🎣TK
Good to hear you online again Fred and like you can't wait for the new season, rivers in wales just gone down after over 3 months in spate or full flood and now blue sky and sun so fancied a go for grayling but sooooo cold for my old bones the log fire won lol. Stay well and hope to see you back on the water soon . ATB Mike PS yes I did get the notification.
@@wildfisher Thanks Fred, was out with the dog one day at Lunan bay and decided to go home Via boysack mill, stopped the car, me and the dog had a walk upto the weir, its so overgrown since i was last there (maybe 30yrs ago) ATB Jim
Good to hear from you again. Aye, opening day is coming closer, and I can feel the excitement building. I've been driving my wife mad, searching through end of line bargain bins and online specials to get myself properly kitted out for the 15th. I've got a couple of new rods and reels, and a head full of ideas that the weather will no doubt have the final say on. 'mon the fush!
Thanks and aye, the excitement is building even although the season seldom kicks off until April. The first trip of the new season is always special even if fish are scarce. 😊😊
Can I ask you guys who are subscribers if you received a notification of this video? I ask because the "notify subscribers" option was nowhere to be found when I uploaded the video. Perhaps I just missed it?
So very beautiful small river and weather -> what a lovely Day for fly fishing 😂 Tight lines and have a nice christmas and winter time ! Hope that spring will come soon again 😇🙃 Markus from germany
The decline of the stocks and size have been brutal after the pens in the sea started popping up so basicly we Norwegians are ruining your salmonfishing:(@@wildfisher
The arrival of the huge factory ships must have a great impact in the feedstock availability for the salmon. Hoovering up everything in their path to process into a multitude of uses.
My family came from around there and I fished it around 1985 and caught a couple at half a pound. Never complain about salmon parr mate, they're gold dust down here in irvine.
Brilliant Fred, another good video… Careful dodging the puddles…. Whatever happened to just a rainy day in Scotland, now as you say all these silly names… the Mrs just tells me it’s a good day to do the washing when it’s windy… that’s also classed as a named storm 💨… Mr Fish to blame I think 😂
Very good to see you out for a walk. Always enjoy seeing the local and hearing your very gentle, plain spoken narrative. Be safe. Cheers from PA in the USA!
