In 2017 headed back to Piney Point for the Phase 3 Classes. 3 weeks would be spent acquiring our tanker assist, LNG, and Government Vessel endorsements. Also spending a whole month learning the particular department we choose to pursue during phase 2. Here we go again..

Heading into Phase 3 tomorrow. Worked a cable ship on phase 2. In fact, I worked the same cable ship YOU worked. I know that because on one of my last days onboard, I looked up towards the top of one of the tanks (hadn’t used that tank the entire hitch until that point) and wouldn’t you know it, there was your name etched in the film of grime the tends to build up on the walls. Couldn’t believe it man! You were a huge reason I ended up in that exact spot. Your videos helped me decide to join, and your phase two video made me really interested in cable ships - enough to ask to be put on one. And there I was, looking at your name up on the wall. Surreal, man. Can’t thank you enough for what you do. Means the world to some of us.

Joe, wow. Right out of high school, I worked on lobster boats - both inshore and off shore - from southeastern, CT. I used to see the tankers and container ships pass through Long Island Sound (the Race) and off shore as well, and I always wondered what it must be like to be aboard making it happen. I was then drawn to the skies as a commercial pilot where I often gazed down at the ships at sea still wondering what it must be like making it happen. I have been watching your channel. I just subscribed, and I thank you for sharing your passion with us. This is a very special channel.

Congratulations on completing this very difficult and detailed training Joe. You and your fellow students worked hard and long to learn your trade. I have watched a number of your excellent videos in the past several weeks, but I had not seen the training videos until today. This type of training is what this country needs more of. Too much emphasis is placed on attending colleges and universities and not enough on vocational training such as machinist, welder, mechanic, plumber, construction worker and more. I am talking about hands on training in detail that will allow people to learn a highly paid trade for jobs that are in high demand. I have a lot more need for someone who can repair my car or plumb my house than I do for another sociologist, lawyer or gender studies major.

From my pieced together understanding throughout watching your videos: You attend an academy, receive on the job training, from that point eventually you're "certified". From there you can join a union at which point you'll take jobs on ships based on the availability of work? If im correct? I'd be interested to see a quick video overview of the entire process as well as expected salaries through the industry. Your videos shine an enjoyable light onto an industry not many will ever get to see, nice work! 👍🏻

seen your videos recently, Cal Maritime Grad '05, 3E), former Marine Engineering Officer, switched shoreside 'cause of my wife and mini-me. Interesting to see life from the Unlicensed Perspective. Joe i have to say that U S merchant mariners are the best trained and paid in the world. i was in the U S Coast Guard in the early 1960s spent six years on active dury. evan back in those days teh merchant trainibg was fantastic. i know the Coast Guard sets a high bar for merchant training and ship safety and that's how it should be. take care good luck.

I believe your MMC should already say OS, and Wiper on it. You could join MSC, or another union as entry level. But if Piney Point can make you an AB in a year I’d say go for it.
@rickjames302
@rickjames302 2 года назад
@@manfredolson6889 master, os, wiper, and steward (Food handling). MSC would be like getting back in the USN again except better quality of life. wouldn't want to go back into engineering though. Just questioning if my assumption that it would be a step down to go back to low man on the totem pole for AB just to be able to get larger vessel sea time for working up to unlimited class master. wondered if it would be similar to being in the navy and going back to "C" school as a fleet returnee; treated with "respect" as you had sea time and training/certs already.
@manfredolson6889
@manfredolson6889 2 года назад
I have no clue what C School is, but you would probably not be quite the low man as an AB. There could be OS level sailors on the ship and you would undoubtedly know more than they. And my little experience is that if “you know your shit” as they say, you will get plenty of respect, even if you are not the best of people. And being a decent person doesn’t get you far if your work ethic and abilities absolutely bite. That all being said, if you are interested in being a Master, captaining a ship, perhaps consider enrolling in an academy and become a 3rd Mate, or just studying on your own and taking the test. I have talked to people from Cal Maritime and they have indicated that there is usually a few people 50+ in each class I’m thinking I should have taken the opportunity when I was 40 and kicking the idea around. Anyways, good luck with what ever you do!
