Another good place to get books you only need for one lesson is the library! My local library has a huge children’s book section and if they don’t have what you need, you can request the library to get it. Usually you have the book for two weeks which is about right for only teaching one lesson!

Also scholastic often has the dollar deals books so I generally buy scholastics super cheap books 😊

I have been a librarian for 8 years and now I am doing art. Either way, I always use “The Dot” for my first lesson. I download the “Quiver” app and print the coloring page off of the international dot day website. Then after we read and they complete the design of their dot, you scan it with your phone or IPAD and it will produce a 3-D representation (like VR) It has always been a hit!

I'm A Fifth Grader In L.A., I REALLY REALLY REALLY Want to be a Teacher when I grow up! You and all the other Teachers on RU-vid are such an inspiration to me and make me want to go to school more! (good job!) My First day of school was yesterday, It was really strange being the in the oldest class in the school! My school is mixed grades! 1 K-1st two1-2 two 2-3 one 3-4 and two 4-5 classes! Last year we did a space curriculum and built space stations with straws and hot glue paper and card stock for decoration and floor and ceiling and tinfoil for the solar panels for power. we put guppies in bottles (2 Liters) with elodea in them! it was super fun and mine had babies! (fry) and now I'm a (non) professional Guppie breeder lol I love the pencil socks by the way love your videos I just left this comment because I ❤️ you and your videos! and also when I was a forth grader that space station thing was really fun! also sorry if you can't do your own curriculum and I'm just teasing you (unintentionally....oops) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm a children's librarian and would recommend checking with your local public library for books. Many sell their donated books for less than $1 each. :)

Pocketful of Primary My pleasure! I’ve been leaning more towards teaching. I think the only thing that is putting me off is the income. I want to be able to live comfortably, and when I was in high school my teachers always mentioned how they were underpaid. Is that true? I bet teaching is worth it, but a lot of people in my past have led me to believe that they do too much for what they’re being paid. Once again, my pleasure. You’re everything I aspire to be.

Libraries often have book sales and are a great source for super cheap books too...we’re talking fifty cents per book! I stopped buying new unless I need a certain title.

I so appreciate you making the choice to use a more sustainable option when it comes to teacher lunches! As a teacher, I too struggle with the convenience factor of disposable plastic, but it sets such a great example for students and can be a catalyst for an amazing conversation about reducing waste. I’ve been teaching for 6 years and have found out that sometimes less is more in the classroom. I did what every overly eager new upcoming teacher does and spent way too much money on what ended up just being “stuff.” It definitely takes experience to know what is truly necessary. Glad to see you too are discovering that!

I spent quite a bit my first two years of teaching. I didn’t have much money to outfit my classroom this year but with all the stuff I bought prior to this year, I had most of what I needed to begin the school year. I get my borders, cleaning supplies and bins from Dollar Tree.

The Word Collector by the author of The Dot is also a good one. I used it to teach my students about creating their personal word wall in their writing journal. They really enjoyed it and selected it to read again from our library.

I just recently found your channel and have been inspired by your energy, organizational skills and your ways to engage your students to learn! I have been teaching for ten years already so I'm a lot older than you. I'm really amazed by your maturity, effort you put towards lesson planning and over all skills as a young teacher. I'm going into my second year of teaching- 6th grade. I have spent quite a bit because I didn't have practically anything last year. Neither did I inherit much going into the classroom. I don't regret it yet. And I'm hoping I feel more at home and situated once the year begins, being able to see myself in what I envision my class should be. I guess I'll find out next week when we go back:)

Those snack containers are also good for traveling to put little things like a chapstick or earrings that you don't want floating around in your bag.

Books! Often public libraries will have an annual sale, like, fill a bag for $5 or a quarter a book and those are like super satisfying to get. All thrift stores in general are awesome as well :)

For cheap books I would suggest visiting your local library also! I work at a public library and we have a constant book sale going on where all kid books are 25 cents each which even includes juvenile and teen books :)

Nice haul! I have had the same idea about shopping this summer- haven’t bought too much. I did go and get the cute pillows from Target. I went on a target hunt! My Dollar Tree must are the face scrubbers for erasers. Lol I don’t let kids use my markers either. I got that same organizer in teal. When do you go back? Today was my first day with students this year.

Okay, this was not the first of your videos I've seen and it's not the video that I will be talking about, but I wanted to say thank you! I'm going into my 3 year of teaching 5th grade and there were many meltdowns I had due to student behaviors and surprise observations. I was sure I was going to quit or be fired. I had always wanted to be a teacher and felt like SUCH A FAILURE. Luckily summer happened and I've been able to calm down and relax. I truly appreciate your video where there was a lot of questioning and frustration with everything happening to you. I know there are a lot of teachers who feel this way, but watching your video was strangely calming for me. That you were able to be so vulnerable and admit how you were feeling, I was in tears. My husband came in the bedroom and saw me crying and asked if I was okay. My reply was "she gets it!" You are amazing and I love your videos. Thank you so much for having that impact on me!

Those small boxes that you keep crayons in, instead of throwing them out, clean them and donate them. Send them to goodwill or some charity for other schools. Throwing them is a bit wasteful

I love my Pro laminator! I got mine from Naier. Have you heard of them? They have tons of products for teachers that are mostly free. You only pay a handling fee. I've gotten lots of great stuff for next to nothing.

I think that spending less as you have taught for longer is because you have already made the investments and if you invest well and get good quality then they will last a good long time and that will mean you spend less going forward. I spend a lot on materials to make resources as though i love trinkets and decorations I tend to make my own and enjoy that, posters are great but you can make your own, or grab them on sale, etc. I am a sucker for pens and stationery though lol, just can't help it

So glad its not just me, my husband sees a slim amazon envelope and he instantly knows its another pack of pens, I think sometimes its hard to know what you will use early on because you are so excited and have so many ideas about ways to teach and tools you need, and once you have done it for a while you realise all those bells and whistles not always really worth it or things you will use - its trial and error I suppose. By the way pen recommendations - I am loving the Papermate inkjoy gel pens and the papermate inkjoy liquid pens, such smooth writers and lovely precise lines but not so thin you can't see the lovely colours! I love Papermate flair pens to by the way and you are so lucky in U.S those dry erase pouches are so cheap compared to here and I love them, they are so convenient to use and saves a ton on photocopying. I got HpInstantink because of you and its seriously one of the best investments EVER!!
