In this Old Classic Car video it's back to the 1940s as we head down to the former RAF Sleap airfield in Shropshire to check out their '40s weekend.
It'd a two-day event themed mainly around WW2 re-enactments, vehicle displays and aerial activities, many people taking part sporting period clothes - civilian and military - with music from the 1940s playing here and there across the display field.
There were a number of cars and lorries dating to the 1930s, 1940s and a little later to be found, including a couple of interesting classic car sightings in the public car park before we even got inside the event itself.
It was neat to see the late-1930s Austin 10 Cambridge in RAF livery as I briefly owned this car a long time ago, long before it was restored. I dragged it out of a garden where it had sat for a while, then it was in its original black paint and needed quite a lot of TLC to get it running again. It's nice to know it ended up being restored and being used for shows like this one at Sleap.
We don't often get to 1940s/WW2-themed events like this so it made for an interesting change compared to the shows and gatherings we typically pop over to.
Thanks for watching, and don't forget there are mountains of show visit videos here on the Old Classic Car channel now so please peruse the video list and playlists when you're finished here.

The truck at 7:50, I played in a chev version (had a crane on back), in Australia in the 70's. They called it a "blitz". It was a shed-queen in good nick (no idea what happened to it)..

Very nice shorter video. I enjoyed it better for being a bit shorter. The Raleigh cycle is the Raleigh Popular, I own one, like mine this one looks to have the largest frame fitted. So you need to be 6ft tall to ride it. I altered the rear sprocket on mine, fitting a larger one. It has made a significant difference riding it. It now has 3 useable speeds as you can peddle it along in top gear. Before top was for going down hill or down wind only. The frame is made from high tensile steel, so it is quite lightweight. They are a better cycle than you think.

Hi Richard . Although these aren't my first choice you have to applaud the time and effort it takes to keep these vehicles in good condition , as you know ! Watching those models flying always makes me nervous . I couldn't justify the time and cost of building these amazing aircraft and then quite regularly losing them in accidents . Thanks Richard.

Agreed, ploughing one of these sizeable r/c models into terra firma must be quite depressing for the owner! Thanks for watching.

WOW, that was BRILLIANT ! What a fantastic day out you had. Such a variety of vehicles and in such lovely condition. Great to see the Avro Anson too - my Dad did a lot of training in those during the war. He was a flight engineer with Transport Command, ending up in Consolidated B24 Liberators. Various items seemed to follow him out of the RAF when he was demobbed - we had a Jerry Can which was filled with petrol for our summer holidays, in case there were no petrol stations where we went. We also had, and I still have, a Gallon Thermos Flask, which also went on holidays, to keep our butter etc cool ! I suspect lots of 'stuff' made it's way out of various RAF Stations somehow or other - happy days. Thanks Rick, I loved this video, and especially poignant as my Dad passed away 9 years ago, tomorrow, aged 94 - wow ! Thanks again - take care 🙂

A nice video RJ, I rather enjoy visiting events such as this one. The participants do put a great deal of effort bordering on obsession into them also and it is quite astounding than many of these vehicles etc still exist.

I remember being on holiday as a young child with my parents in Blackpool in the late 1950's and there used to be pleasure trips out at sea and the public was transported to the boats using ex military trucks and also Bren gun carrier. Some years later I saw one of them and the sea salt did a lot of damage to them and they where scrapped.

A nice and interesting video. Something a bit different from the 1940's. Very well done to all those who took part, all in period costumes so nice to see. There used to be someone with a Jeep near me with all the shovels and things attached, I think he must have moved it on as I have not seen it this summer. Those model aircraft were quite something to see from a distance you could mistake them for the real thing! Thanks Rick for your efforts. 👍👍

Interesting. ( One of my radios is a 1941 Sonora BC/SW. purchased just before the U.S. entered the war. The owners listened to the whole war unfolding, on it., then the Cold War. I’ve had it professionally restored electronically, and it works fantastic.). 📻🙂

Those largish R/C models show considerable craftsmanship and deep pockets. However rubber powere free flight scale requires as much craftsmanship, but more aerodynamic skill in order to teach a model to fly on it's own. No deep pockets required either. Formby impersonators are great. George F was a competitive motor cycle competeteras well as an equestrian.

18:18, imagine having a brass plaque like that now, In a vehicle?. (More likely, a sun-sensitve credit card with a use-by date on it). Very similar car to a rover p3?.

Surely the Post War Austin at the beginning was an A50, not an A40.👍

I forget what the badge on the back said, but the A40 and A50 Cambridge were virtually identical bar the badge on the boot
