Hi, I have lived and breathed vintage & classic cars, old lorries, automobilia and more here in the UK since the mid-1980s when I first laid a spanner on the decomposing remains of a 1967 Triumph Spitfire. I learnt to drive in a Mk1 Mini, and took my test in our Austin A40 Mk1. I created the Old Classic Car (OCC) site in 2001 to reflect my own interests in the world of aged automobiles and is updated regularly. I hope that my videos about these characterful old cars, and my obsessions about them, help raise the profile of these wonderful relics of motoring's past. Please subscribe and, if you are able, leave me a few comments. Many thanks, R Jones. My Old Man used to work for BT or GPO as it was when he drove a double cab Karrier MLH 400. He used to tell tales of cooking their dinner on the engine as they were going along given access was within the cab. Given the GPO had loads of these ( think they were 3 1/2 tons) very few seemed to have survived. I know his one fell apart eventually with woodworm because the crew cab was made of timber.
The star of the show (no pun intended) is the Star and the Albion. Never even heard of these vehicles! The Star seems to drive at a nice clip too. 🎉. Another great video! 😊
Excellent video of what could best be described as an eclectic extravanganza! Loved the old girls - Albion, Austin, Star and Bullnose Morris. Bingo - ever since I started watching the OCC channel I have been eagerly looking out for a Lotus Carlton at the meets! A real bad boy and nothing else quite like it in the day.

I liked the dogs there. The young lady on the Fergie was also a good attraction. That event was way overpacked in my opinion. Can't imagine what the Ferrari owner next to the mopeds was going through.
My 1988 Volvo 240 DL station wagon lasted to 600,000 miles, so I gave it away because I had nowhere to store it. original paint, no rust, still ran strong.
My dad had a 74 164E same colour as yours but with an orangey caramel interior. Mum found the clutch a bit heavy on the four speed. Compared to her 71 1300 beetle. On the motorway you'd feel a slight lurch when the o / d engaged and disengaged. That car ate the motorway miles no problem. It was thirsty but dad had a fuel allowance from work.
I like your conveyance to this gathering. Nice looking car. File under minutiae: The US had a Star marque as well in the early 1920's built by Durant. It sold in the UK under the Rugby brand to avoid confusion with the UK Star.
I knew the owner of this car many years, it was his pride and joy until his passing a couple of years ago. Always maintained and garaged and I think he had it from new.
Great vid. Vans do it for me! My mate bought a brand new Midi van in 1987,D reg. Great van except when I used it for the week he was on holiday and the column change decided to seize up. Third and reverse, all you need really!
That's got to be worth a go. The engine sounds really sweet and it's astonishingly good underneath. I've had a couple of these and a well sorted one is a beautiful thing to drive. I also found them to be really reliable, contrary to popular mythology.
Writing as I am watching your vid. The car is absolutely perfect underneath! This looks better than even our 20 year old cars in dry South Africa. The mechanicals you can always fix but OMG the body seems to be so corrosion free!
It does look to be quite good for a 20yr old Jaguar, it may have had the odd bit of paintwork but if so, it would have been years ago and if it was hiding something, it'd show by now I think
"A little extra frisson of excitement". Such a civilized way to describe the mine field of aging mechanicals and electronics. This one looks like a good buy! Not so much over here across the pond, but in it's natal neighborhood, I'd go for it.
Very interesting and different video. The Jag looks sound to me, well cared for and cheap at the price. What is the mileage? Did you check the oil condition? Useful to have the "aged assistant" along for a second opinion! Getting it up on the ramp is a big bonus. Reminds me of the days before I could afford new cars of sleepless nights worrying if my decision to buy a particular second-hand car was the right one! Shame you didn't take the youthful assistant along to learn what to look for when his time comes to dip his toe into the risky world of second-hand car purchase. Does Mrs OCC get to have a new handbag if you splash out on the Jag?!
I think the mileage is just under 120k, most of that was in the early years, more recently it's been doing a few hundred miles a year until going out of use 2-3 years back. It was still getting a full service every 12 months even though only doing a few hundred miles between changes from what I read in the file. Oil looks new, not sure about handbag(s) but I imagine something will be suggested if necessary!
@@oldclassiccarUK I'm amazed at its good condition underneath. Can't wait to see if you put your hand in your pocket. It would then be two OCC V8s - burble, burble........
Even though it has been sat for a few years this big (or little) cat looks in quite good shape. As it has a new battery and alternator the garage should have cleared any errors on the dashboard, errors would likely be related to dead batteries. One good thing about filming the car is that often any colour changes would 'stick out like a sore thumb' on the camera much more perhaps than the naked eye might notice on a dull day. The underside looks good and probably has a coat of waxoyl or similar which of course is much better than the old school under seal that can hide a multitude of sins. I would buy it if I were you even if there is a bit of haggling to be done (needs an MOT ? and so on) it looks to be a good example, there are some 'rot boxes' out there! Good luck Rick and thanks for taking us along, very interesting especially getting a good look at the underside, not often you get that chance when thinking of buying a car. 👍👍
Yes it was handy to have a peer underneath, it all seems pretty clean under there for a 20yr old car, it spent most of its life in a dry garage and did very little mileage in recent times before going out of use 2-3 years back.
Those tensioners were modified in or around 2000 so shouldn't be a problem. I have a 3.2L V8 XJ8 which I bought for just under £600. It needs work and also stood for about 18months. Don't buy any car over ten years old if you want to avoid spending money. Jaguar's are no worse than other brand. That Jaguar has a current MOT which expires on 15th May 2025 and didn't have an "Advisories". So whilst it looks neglected it is a sound car. Subject to the price, it could be a very nice easy clean up and run Jaguar! A friend of mine has the initals RHM.
If I understand right, this one should have the 2nd gen tensioners, the best of all (3rd gen) were introduced after the model went out of production and are often retro-fitted (I had these done on my 98 XJR). Agreed, any "modern" that gets to 20+ years of age will inevitably have gremlins itching to make themselves known :-)
I like the color and I assume the green stuff will clean off without leaving pits in the paint. Sitting for that long is a worry with fuel injected, digitized cars. I wonder why it didn't sell before now. Otherwise, it appears to be in good shape and cared for while it was in service. 2500 pounds or thereabouts seems reasonable to me for what it is. Letting go of the Jeep is a good move IMHO.
A builder friend of mine as one And he was telling me if it doesn’t have FSH walk away 😊 Not my cup of tea !!!!😮sooner keep the jeep But let you know an owners opinion Thanks for video😊😊😊
The Jeep has a magnificent engine and could pull a tree down, but the interior was very low rent and fairly uncomfortable. We'll see anyway, thanks for watching :)
Though Jags are for me inline 6s (cos I'm an old fart and former XKDHC owner!) this jam jar looks very clean and not being turbo charged will not have stressed the engine, so go for it! I am jealous! Rob
All old Jaguars should be cherished. Possibly leave the x type and modern s type outside. I’m lucky enough to have several old jaguars in the family. XK140 fhc se in my dad’s garage ❤
Hi Rick, beware of Nikaassil liners.I had the same model in the same year which shouldn’t have had them but for some unexplained reason, very much did.Mine started to have problems around 75000 miles which led to it’s demise in my hands, although Someone eventually put a new engine in it and it lived on.Definitely worth checking for.l loved mine and would have kept it for ever had it not had those issues.
I think you could do a lot worse than that one, It looks like a car that’s been well looked after over the years. For a car in that price bracket I think I’d snap it up..
It's an option certainly. I've had 3x XJ Series 1s plus a 1998 XJR, and dad had 2x XJ Series 3s before buying his current X350, to buy a decent XJ S1-S3 would cost 3 or 4 times what this one is up for. It's swings and roundabouts really. Thanks for watching.
Nice colour - lovely car - represents outstanding value for money for the car you get. I've given up on car radios - portable bluetooth speaker and my playlist on the phone if the radio has had it. Hope you get it
I think you’ve got a goodun there Rick. Seems very solid and as you say will look really nice with a full detail. Would prefer the normal coloured wood than the Smokey wood fitted to the Sports but…..what the heck. Quite like the colour and upholstery colour combo. Even at 2,500 pounds it’s pretty cheap. Didn’t see what the mileage was. If owned by older gent and being a 3.2 unlikely to have been driven hard. Like the idea of the full aluminium body. Saw one ‘in the raw’ (no paint) at the BMM. Hope they accept your offer.
Agreed, I've seen a lot of rusty ones of these but this one looks ok, I assume it's had some remedial work over the years but if it had been done badly it'd be showing by now. The later aluminium cars are much bigger overall, taller, more space inside too but less sleek IMO.
worst thing you could have done is drive dads jag, haha. That one looks nice, will clean up well, it sounded good on start up too. Since I have subscribed I have only seen the Jeep being used once to rescue a car Little Dodge I think. In my eyes no big loss getting ride of the Jeep. The Jag like you said are great wafters, I have had four in my time , all great cars. Good luck with the offer, it will be great using the Jag for car shows where it is a bit of a drive away. A real nice comfortable cruiser, not to bad on fuel either.
Morning Richard. With a few exceptions the cars of the '80's were very bland . I drove a 2.9 litre Jaguar once , and only once ! What a terribly under powered car ! Thanks Richard.
At the time I thought most cars of that era were fairly dreary, but now they have some interest if only for their imaginative colours compared to today, and of course their scarcity.
