Wow! I have to say that this is the longest and most detailed movie reaction I've seen on here in the last two years. I've never seen one that's been over an hour. And you were even able to show MOST of the movie in it as well. That's amazing! Definitely one of the best movie trilogies ever. And if it makes you feel better - Tom Wilson (Biff) - was constantly making sure Lea was as comfortable as she could be in that car scene and in the cafeteria. He is a total sweetheart IRL - and was not comfortable at all doing those scenes - but wanted to make sure Lea was okay. They ALL did such an amazing job. Happy New Year from Ontario, Canada! :)

The "too darn loud" comment is a joke because the guy with the megaphone is Huey Lewis, the lead singer of 'Huey Lewis and the News' - the group that released the song 'The Power of Love'. And you are correct that rock music was considered too loud by many adults back then.

The way the teacher acted was normal in the 80's. My social studies teacher used to get so mad at kids goofing off that he would yell at them, call them out into the hall and yell some more, then break out the ping pong paddles to spank them. Different times, and we turned out just fine.

I love how both of you have each other's undivided attention when explaining parts of the movie. If I get married someday, I want my wife to look at me the way you guys look at each other.

That scene with Strickland grabbing Marty and insulting him was a reality in the 80s and 90s. In Jr. High I had a teacher who threatened kids who were being disruptive, he would bring them into this little room between the classroom and hallway that was about 5 feet x 8 feet push them against the wall and challenge them to a fight, as if one of us would be dumb enough to actually fight back and get suspended or arrested for it. He only did it to me once and my parents told me if he ever did it again that they would support whatever decision I made.

Great reaction, this is such a brilliant series of films - the epitome of a timeless classic. This script is actually used to teach screenwriting, because everything is either setup, or payoff, or points to another part of the story in a meaningful way. This movie isn't held together by intense action sequences or impressive set pieces - it's all just characters and dialogue. The story behind the development and making of this film is an interesting one, y'all should check out a video on it sometime once you finish the trilogy. There were a lot of rewrites, they actually filmed a ton of the movie with a different actor as Marty and it wasn't working at all....there was a lot of doubt that it would even be successful. The fact that it turned out to be one of the most iconic and beloved films of all time defied most of the expectation throughout its production.

This movie just perfectly emphasizes the significance of having a bit of confidence in your life. It literally effects everything.

I’m English but lived in the US in my childhood & this came out during that time. It was amazing in theatres and I must have gone to see it 4 or 5 times it was so special 💛 Loved it, the story the effects, the soundtrack, everything! Always nostalgic to watch it again 😊

16:35: You are correct. For one thing, "we" (80s teenagers) did not have our own phone numbers (everything was a landline - no cellphones). So we were giving out our family's phone number. You didn't just give that to anyone. I still don't. It's how we were raised.

Someone else said it, but just to be sure y'all see - when you finish the second film, as SOON as the screen goes black and says "TO BE CONCLUDED".....STOP THE MOVIE. It IMMEDIATELY shows very spoilery footage from the third film, and I know y'all want to watch these as blind as possible, so I think you will enjoy it more if you dont know EXACTLY where it's going.

Fun fact: when the Mom is telling the story and interrupts the Dad, his response is not annoyance. She asked him just exactly what he was doing up in the tree in front of her house, “what was it, George, _birdwatching_ ?” while giving him a sly eye. His response of “WHAT, Lorraine?! What?” wasn’t annoyance. He was remembering exactly what he had been doing up in that tree, and was caught out in the middle of the memory. Her tone suggests both that she knew exactly what he was doing in that tree, and that she had teased him with the question many times over the years. He, however, displayed embarrassment, rather than shared enjoyment over the memory. The fact that Lorraine’s dad called Marty “>another one< of these damned kids” indicates that George was not the first “birdwatcher” to get caught falling out of the tree. Yet Lorraine still undressed in front of an open window, with the curtains undrawn. Despite being not-so-innocent, she was nonetheless naive about what the consequences could be of drawing that sort of male attention. Biff cures her of the delusion that she can display her body like that with zero adverse consequences. Not to put the blame on her, but there’s a reason why it’s inadvisable to hang out in a dark alley in the middle of the night in a bad part of town. Poking a tiger seems harmless -until it isn’t anymore.

But you are right that the shift from the rock of the 50s to the hair bands and louder style of the 80s was irritating to parents. They didnt remember how their folks responded to Elvis and Chuck Berry.

I love the little details in this movie. Like when Marty goes back in time he runs over a young pine tree. When he comes back, the sign at the mall changes from Twin Pines to Lone Pine Mall.

Great fun reaction guys. I watched this with my Dad one time. He was 16 in 1955 growing up in Southern CA and he said a lot of the scenarios though put to the extreme were spot on..😊

I saw this in the theaters with my brother in 1985. It was huge at the time, when the movie ended I looked back at everyone in the dark and everyone was grinning from ear to ear. Effects are great because it was Steven Spielberg at his peak.

I saw it in the movies in 1985 when I was 7. I remember the whole movie theater going crazy at the end of the movie when the car suddenly rises up into the air and flies.

I will point out something though I think you mentioned around the 47 minute mark or so on the video you mentioned of how people in the '50s would pay attention to the TV more instead of each other, well ironically nowadays people are using their cell phones or mobile phones/ Iphones more than ever..... and I did grow up in the 1980s , but when I go to a concert especially a rock concert or whatever we never had the technology today to just keep recording and taking photos....we would just pay attention to the moments and memories of the concert.

My favorite trilogy! So glad you guys are doing it. And yes, it was the 80’s and a lot of things in the script of these movies wouldn’t be acceptable nowadays. Chris is right, the whole scene in the car was more to show the bad character of the bad guy than anything else. And it gave the chance for george to be brave since it was a serious situation. Love how sensitive you are Daniela! Even talking about soulmates. I think this mirrors what people mean when they say the right person at the wrong time. Marty had to force them to get together because George wasn’t ready to go after her. The accident though, put George in the right time. Marty took that timing away from them and had to figure it out how to fix it.

Daniela, yes you are right, there was Back to the Future theme in the Universe Studios in Orlando Fl. It was so good and excited, but then it was changed to the Simpsons.

I just have to say that I really enjoy this. The most slow paced and detailed reaction Ive ever seen, soo rare these days. I think most would put out a 20 min video about the whole movie. I actually have to go to sleep, and see the rest tomorrow, reminds me of ye olden days! 😅 And I love the writers idea that got the movie started. Could I have been friends with my dad when he was in high school? Obviously assuming that both were same age. Its so trippy to think that our parents were young once, and propably doing lots of things they should have not.

Fun background fact: in the beginning of the movie, Marty’s older brother David is dressed in a Burger King uniform, a job which in 1985 was associated with teenagers and poor families (still is, truth be told). In the new 1985, he wears a suit, works in an office, and reads Forbes magazine at the breakfast table. It’s not just George’s and Lorraine’s fortunes that have been enhanced, but everyone else’s in their family.

In the beginning of the movie, Jennifer didn't give Marty her number - she gave him her grandmother's number because she said she'll be staying at her grandma's and she wants him to call. It's even sweeter. Loved your reaction.

1:15:15: If they had made that scene weaker, it would not have worked. Assault was not uncommon in movies from that era and it was certainly not in real life in the 1950s. No one was bothered by it in 1985. It was not controversial. Many movies, such as Once Upon a Time in America (1984) went all the way in that regard. And if what you saw here bothered you, certainly do not see A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick. It may be an all-time classic, but you will find it VERY disturbing.

I loved your thorough and insightful reaction to this film. It’s my favorite movie. I laughed at the laundry basket and clothesline comment. LOL. I am guilty. Once I was complaining to a co-worker about my knees being sore after painting my bathroom. While cutting in by the ceiling over the tub, I had the paint tray on the floor and had to squat down to load the brush, then without dripping the paint I had to precariously climb the step ladder I had in the tub, paint, climb back down, squat down to the floor to reload, climb back up etc. a dozen times or more. My lady co-worker said “why didn’t you just put some paint in a small container like a used butter tub and take it up the ladder with you?” I felt SO STUPID but I learned my lesson LOL!

Unfortunately women say they want a guy with confidence, but then if they try to portray that they are too aggressive. A guy asking if she wants to dance can be considered by her to not be "man enough". Women don't understand mixed signals they give to guys.

1:02:20 I think another factor is this was before the gangs, like motorcycle gangs, from the 60s and 70s when they started making trouble when they gathered. It was after the gang problems that towns and cities began to implement new laws for loitering. I watch a variety of things. One is a show that follows multiple police departments around and films them live as they do their jobs (sometimes badly) and one of the quickest ways to draw the attention of police is to gather a group in an area. This was expressed in S.C. where an officer pulled up and saw like 10 people hanging out in a motel parking lot. They didn't see anything illegal, but immediately suspected they were doing/buying/selling drugs. They couldn't find any evidence of that, but dispersed them anyway with a threat of arrest for loitering, which is against the law in that city. I believe that is a pretty standard law on the books of pretty much every town, city and state nowadays.

We weren't allowed to watch tv during family dinner time when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's unless it was a special occassion..then the tv trays came out.

(Heart of rock and roll) 3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie. 4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose. 5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 🤣 6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous. 7. Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine Mall when Marty takes one out when he goes back to 1955. 8. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta. 9. If you want a first time/share of an OUTSTANDING movie where Christopher Lloyd plays the heavy you must do "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

In the background of the opening shot is a newspaper article about how Doc Brown sold 137 prime acres (55.44 hectares) to developers (he needed the money for his time travel experiments). The house where he lives in 1985 is 1614 John F. Kennedy Drive, but in 1955, the main house has an address of 1640. By 1985, the house Doc lived in in 1955 had become the Burger King and nearby commercial lots.

I'll never forget how my 5ft 6 dad, a WWII Navy Veteran, who rose to the rank of chief, stopped a 200 pound 6 ft teenager from catching a smaller guy in the neighborhood from catching him and beating him up...in 1964....I was 8 years old. He stood in the guy's way to stall him long enough for the kid to get to his house 4 doors down. The big goon said "get out of my way old man, tried to force his way past. Dad did some kind of military defense maneuver and sent him to the ground face down, foot on his neck. Dad said "You're not going not going anywhere unless you want me to call the cops." The kid was in total shock such a small man could take him down. Soon the neighbor across the street who was a younger Korean War Vet came over. They sent him on his way. The neighbor said "Damn, Paul, i've never seen a short guy take down a big guy like that before...nice goin'. " Paul says: "I've never seen that either, but I couldn't let him just start beating on that kid. The element of surprise worked well...actually I was surprised as hell too." They both the laughed. Neighbor said "Well, I'll never forget that as long as I live, wow! "Everytime I see that scene where Marty punches Biff's lights out and then later his teenaged dad does, I think of that day, lol.

The generation gap was still in swing at this time. Referring to the scene of the music being "too darn loud". Adults slightly up tight about youth culture, kids up tight over their parents generation, thinking their music was boring. I was actually one of the few (probably only) kid in high school that found 40s and 50s music interesting then. Now music of the older and younger generations are far less different, so it's not such a big deal anymore. Like I can hear pop songs now and not feel alienated from it. Where as rock music at one time was really seen as not for anyone over 30. Funny though. As a kid my dad really got into disco in the late 70s. Bought records of groups like Donna Summer and the Village People. So it wasn't a hard line between the generations, but it was there overall. My parents were pretty laid back over the current pop music scene. A better way to put it maybe, was it was just seen that current pop was inappropriate in certain situations. Once in 1984 we were playing a current pop song on the bus waiting to go on a school function and the older bus driver I didn't really know, got so mad and demanded we turned that filty music off now. I think it was Chaca ckan "I Feel For You". How times have changed.

Marty's Mom suffers from The Florence Nightingale effect it is a trope where a caregiver falls in love with their patient, even if very little communication or contact takes place outside of basic care. Feelings may fade once the patient is no longer in need of care. it is not just that she feels sorry for him because her dad hit him with the car, she would have fallen in love with anyone who her dad hits with the car, because George was pushed out of the way Marty was hit and not George, Lorraine falls in love with her patient

Hey guys new sub here I loved your reaction but I would recommend watching the movie without as many pauses to receive the more appropriate experience. Your analysis is good and valid but it's usually wrapped up in the next line of the movie. When we watched in the movie theater we weren't able to pause it.... Keep up the good work guys!

The part where you mention generational acceptances in society is so true. It wasn't that long ago that Elvis shaking his pelvis on camera was a huge scandal to prudish eyes.

A lot of reactors miss the inside joke of Huey Lewis being in the movie, but thsts just a generational thing. Same with Doc scoffing at Reagan, an actor in the 50s, would become President.

Some of the fx were updated for the dvd release. Dodgy 2000s cgi.

One of my favorite movies. Another movie reaction suggestion for you is another one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

In the Italian 🇮🇹 dub of the movie, Marty says he saw the tv footage on a video, as at the time, Italy never showed reruns

This was the GOAT movie trilogy until TLotR movies were made. They held their place for 25 years. If you call it action/comedy it still holds it.

I'm a writer so that part of George McFlys character always struck a cord with me.

I have seen this movie and various reactors to it probably 100 times. I have to say I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed watching this with you two. I honestly thought the constant pausing and discussing would bother me, but it was far from it. I'm surprised, but I really enjoyed that. You've found yourself a new sub because I can't WAIT to see what others you'll do. As for Marty's father in the beginning seemingly annoyed by his wife's story, I took it as embarrassment. Don't forget, she said about him being up in the tree, "what was it, George, birdwatching?" yet remember, he was actually peeping on her getting dressed.

It really wasn't that far off, regarding 1950's culture in America. You had to prove your manhood from an extremely early age, you had to treat women as if you were a caveman almost, and you ridiculed any guy who appeared weak or effeminate. That was the John Wayne, Rock Hudson, James Dean era.

This movie is used as an example in film school as a "perfect script" it's got everything. Great reaction, looking forward to more 70s and 80s classics 👍

Believe it or not, I saw this as a re-run because our local Indianapolis library was able to acquire and project an actual film print for the kids and parents assembled. Even in that small library hall, there was something magical about it. Since then, the franchise has held a special place and replay value in my heart. My brother recently showed to his kids the trilogy, slightly edited for content (mostly language) as they are still a bit young. Worth it.

As someone who grew up in the 1950's, this movie hit so many nuances of the era back then as opposed to more recent times. This would be good to show to a class on Recent American History so as to be able to point these out and discuss each and every one of them. From that viewpoint, I don't know if you have seen It's A Wonderful Life - if you haven't, would love to see your reaction to it. It is northing like Back To The Future except it gives a pretty authentic view from the (ordinary) people who experienced, between the end of WWI (1919) and the end of WWII (1946). There is what living through the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic was like, the Roaring Twenties, when everyone - and I mean everyone - danced the Charleston, the Depression, particularly bank runs, and the War from the viewpoint of the homefront. As it was made in '46, it will also push your viewing experience back decades. Another must-see movie if you haven't seen it is the 1939 Wizard of Oz - great for a reaction on your channel to this classic. Going back further - Shirley Temple in Heidi (mid-1930's), and two silent movies from the 1920's. Both of these last ones are comedies, where due to the awkwardness of providing dialog, physical comedy is everything, to the extreme. The stunts were (mostly) performed by the actors and were literally death-defying in many cases. There is Buston Keaton in The General (great if you like railroads and/or the Civil War), and Harold Lloyd in Safety Last. This second one features one of the most iconic stunts of all time, with him hanging on the hands of a giant clock stories above main street. By the way, this scene is referenced not once but twice in Back To The Feature. One of the numerous clocks in the opening shot has a miniature Lloyd hanging on a clock hand, the clocktower scene at the end also has Doc Brown get into the same pose. Another great thing about the 1920's movies is that they are in the public domain, so you can react to the entire movie without worrying about copyright. And they are also available for free on RU-vid.

lol the super stressful scenes at the end? I saw this opening weekend. Imagine being in a theatre with 800 other people collectively stressing like that. The audience cheer when he made it was awesome.

It makes me sad that your generation never experienced "hanging out." It was a huge influence on my life..

In the original version of the script , it was supposed to be a modified refrigerator that shot a beam of energy at people that caused them to travel in time, but someone though it should be a mobile machine. The fridge idea was then moved over to the next in the series Indiana Jones movie - where they nuke a fake town. There was a battle over choosing a the type of car - originally going after a Mustang. The delorean was chosen because of its gull wing door. At the front 3/4 angle, it looks look a spaceship's door opening. Also it was much more serious/darker - there was a nuclear war they were trying to stop. One thing to notice - - that ice covered effect on the car (as it returns from a trip) never happens again - in any of the rest of the movies

BTTF took the 80's by storm when released. It's hard to overstate. Far more time has passed since the movie was released until today 1985 to 2023 or 38 years than the 30 years that Marty went back in time. The move itself is an 80's time capsule now.

I was blown away when it first came out. And i had to wait 4 years for the second to come out. Imagine that. 😋

The DeLorean taking off and flying into the future at the end seems like an intentional set-up for a planned sequel, but it actually wasn't. There was no plan for a Part 2 at the time, it was only meant to be a fun gag to end the movie with. Scriptwriter Bob Gale says that if they actually had a sequel in mind from the start, he would not have included Jennifer getting into the DeLorean with Doc and Marty at the end of this movie. Her presence became a major hurdle when Gale sat down to write the script for the next one, and you'll notice when you watch Part 2 that the story kinda has to find ways to work around her presence.

Overall, I don't think the 80s were really all that uptight. Sure, there are always a few uptight troublemakers; I seem to remember there were a few groups upset over violent or overly sexy content in video games or songs. They even got WalMart to have warning labels on games and music they sold, and sometimes, they would even sell edited versions of songs. But in this case, I think this movie has more uptight people in it just because it helps to drive the storyline.

I keep saying this in every reaction to this movie and I’ll say it again. Doc set the alarm clock wrong. Electricity must be consumed the instant it is generated. Not a second before and not a second after. Had Marty been able to gun it right when the alarm clock went off, he would have been early and missed the charged cable completely whether the cable was intact or not.

Classic 80's movies, you should definitely check out the sequels, awesome 😎

Fun fact: the largest coal power plant in America in 1955, the Kingston plant, went fully online on November 12, 1955, the very same night the lightning struck the clock tower. But even that power plant only produces 1.398 gigawatts, so Marty was still screwed, unless they used the lightning bolt.

HILARIOUS STORY: There's a scene where 1955 Doc asks Marty who'll be president in 1985. Marty says "Ronald Reagan" and Doc humorously remarks "Ronald Regan! The actor?!" (And yes, Ronald Reagan was a big Hollywood actor back in the day before he became politician). And then he sarcastically carries on the punchline by mentioning other famous 50s actors (Jerry Lewis, Jane Wyman, Jack Benny) to become future politicians as well. When President Ronald Reagan saw that part during a premiere at the White House, he enjoyed and laughed at the scene so much that he actually asked the projectionist to REPLAY the scene one more time. 🤣😂😄
