In this video, we are going over important compact/portable back-up gear that I always have with me when I go to a show. These have come in handy when something breaks and/or I forget something (like how I somehow forgot my mixer at my recent gig I played last weekend). These items are relatively inexpensive and can save the day when you need them.

Thanks for watching everyone! And thank you to the commenters to told me about how I shouldn't have the 9V batteries in that case just loose like that. It was really obvious, and I don't know how I didn't notice that (usually the random accessories bag/case just gets random stuff thrown into it over the years). They are now in mini-plastic cases to make sure the positive/negative terminals don't touch anything else. I appreciate it!

Scott, you are an impressive musician and business man. I'm 71 and spent over 30 years in an engineering career. I always wanted my own band and finally in 1994 put together a blues rock band in Wilmington. NC. I have a special respect for your resourcefulness. In order to realize my dream of having a band while holding down a job, raising two kids, paying the bills, etc., etc., I had to run down the musicians, break down the songs, schedule rehearsals, buy the PA, mics, book gigs, tote equipment, set up equipment, front the gigs, deal with management at gigs, pay the band, break down the equipment, take it home and stow it. I'm considering playing out again and your recommendations extremely helpful and with the improvements 3 decades has contributed - may make this pipe dream come true for me. Again, I thank you very much for your videos and wish you every success... and genuinely believe Bezos should put you in his will. Peace !

I'm a DJ and I have everything X2. 2 mixer-controllers, 2 laptops, 2 microphones, 2 wireless in-ear monitors and 2 sets of speakers (one main pa and one as monitor speakers. When the time is there I can rotate my monitors as pa) and a pack of cables. My booth has both Mixed-Controllers build in. Once I had smoke out of my mixer and lessons learned the hard way 😂

My former rhythm guitarist taught me the importance of always bringing an extra set of clothes. Not only in case of rain or when the Immodium doesn't kick in, but it's come in handy when other bandmates forgot their black shirt and/or pants.

Dude! Last year I forgot my dress pants for a wedding lol. No joke. Packed 3 PA systems (ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception)…. All the wireless and mics and cables needed…. Forgot the pants 😅

Played for a wedding band and the singer always brought a spare shirt so when it got bloody from somebody's boyfriend telling him it wasn't ok to hit on his date during the reception it was just a short pause. Except when he was hitting on the bride.

Many years ago I had the exact same scenario. 2 1/2 hours away and left my mixer behind. Before the days of inputs on speakers and such. No way around it. There was a band set up in the main lounge with the same mixer but the venue had no idea how to contact them for permission to borrow it. So, since I play acoustic guitar, I had everyone move their chairs up closer to the stage and I did an "unplugged" show. No mic, no amplification , no tracks, nothing, just my voice and my guitar. To my relief, they loved it and even tipped me quite well. I've never forgotten my mixer since.

Karma happens at the most unlikely of times! I have 3 mixers, 2 digital and one analog. I typically run 2 RCF Art 910’s for wedges with a pair of RCF Evox 8’s for foh. I have 3 more monitors in my van. I have pretty much 2 of everything. I have computers, 2 iPads 1 for mixing and the other to run Jamzone or Stage Traxx3 plus my phone with Jamzone and Stage Traxx 3 on it. I try to be prepared as I can but still sometimes things can go wrong. Thanks for all you do Scott, appreciate it very much!

Dealing in a professional way with technical defects from the point of view of a perfoming musician: The audience does not even notice that there is a defect. Dealing in a professional way with technical defects from the point of view of the audience: "Improvise" something musically impressive or fun without your broken gear. I once was in a situation where I as a bass player had to fill up some time for the PA guy to get things working again. I was in a hard rock/metal cover band at that time. So I played the bass line of "No more tears" by Ozzy and made the audience sing the other instruments (and the vocals of course), dividing them im groups and "conducting" them. I think most of the audience remember this as the most fun part of the show, couldn't count the beers I was invited for after the show. Always remember: It's an entertaiment business, *you* are the show. If you suck without you high tech gear, then you suck at all. And not to sound arrogant: I would not consider me a a great musician, I was so nervous in that situation I nearly sh*tted my pants. I just had luck to have a good idea ... and I learned a lesson that night.
@ScottUhlMusic

I agree for sure, the audience is not going to care about technical defects unless it’s really catastrophic. The show must go on 👍

Hey Scott, great video for any touring musician. I’ve owned a production company and have been doing sound for the last 50 years . the back up patch gear that we carry is along the same lines that you do. I also have some crew that are so OCD as far as carrying back up gear that we never have to worry, but that’s the part of being a professional that makes you a professional. Prior planning prevents poor performance! Great job on the video.

My god... it's like you channeled my moms purse!!! lol. Really, I have about 70% of the same stuff on hand. But... you're missing something. I roll with a handful of granola bars for those players that arrive late and hangry lol. Seriously, I had a bass player who's mood was directly attached to his stomach. I'd see him scowling during set up and toss him a couple granola bars. I also keep a small pharmacy in a bag I bring to shows that includes Imodium for the same reason lol. The only thing I don't have his back up cymbals for my drummer who forgot his cymbal bag at a gig 4 hrs away. I told him to just go "PSSSSH" into his mike when he needed a crash or "pssssssp" for high hats. He didn't do it. Lucky for him... I did lol.

Scott, great video. The first gig our new guitarist played with us he had left his IEM rig where we rehearse. Fortunately I had a spare P2 and a new box of $20 KZ IEMs. I'll need to order a couple of the CCAs because my bass player is always forgetting his for rehearsal. 30 years ago, another bass player forgot his strap and we had to use his belt and duct tape to get through the night. OH yea, of course you carry spare strings, but check that your bass player carries his own set. The same player that forgot his strap never had a string break so he didn't has a spare set the night he broke his D string. We had to play our entire first set sans bass while he drove the 30 miles to and from his house for strings. Now, I always carry a spare set of cheap Bass strings. I run my GT-1000 straight to the mixer (no amps) so I'm definitely go to check out those Mooers. One final note, cover those spare 9 Volts terminals with electrical tape. Years ago I had one in my pants pocket and a penny shorted the terminals while I was driving down the road. It burnt a hole through my pocket and made a small blister on my leg before I could get it out. Great Work! Let me know if you ever play Ohio.

Great list, Scott. I definitely got some tips on things I hadn't thought of, and not sure I could even add anything. I had already learned the hard way to have extras of a lot of things on your list. I carry an extra amp power cord or two, since two different bass players I gigged with forgot theirs. I also ended up being 'the guy' for all kinds of adapters to plug 'this' into 'that'.

You have excellent and valuable knowledge of your equipment and how the systems work and interconnect. Thanks for sharing. In the 70's and 80's, I was a Peavey dealer. A very popular piece of gear for small bands was the XR600 amp/mixer in a box. When the bands got bigger, they kept those units to use rather than trade them in. They were used as practice PA's, or monitor amps. In a pinch, they worked as bass amps, keyboard systems , and even as guitar amps if necessary. Having something that worked was extremely useful when another piece of gear broke or was forgotten.

14:20 you have a lot of metal parts around exposed contacts of 9v batteries... if you short those out for a long time they will get VERY hot... I'm not sure they will catch on fire but I had accidentally shorted a 9v battery with a coin on my backpack once and I realized that when I felt it burning my back. Hi, Scott, sorrybthat this is a bit off topic, but i have a feeling my Duet 2 is causing me problems and i cant afford to get the Duet 3. I need to get a recommendation for a portable Audio interface to use live with a Macbook pro and Logic. What's happening is my guitar sound intermittantly deteriorates with Helix Native.. It might be Helix, but im feeling the Duet is the problem. Can you suggest a solution?
@ScottUhlMusic

I used to use an old resident audio interface that was “portable” but I’m pretty sure it was discontinued. I’m not very familiar with portable interfaces but a lot of them I’m pretty sure can be bus powered (powered off of the computer) which is nice for portability

@@ScottUhlMusic I have two ideas for you: A) I have watched, and continue to watch and learn from all your content. That said, the world of wireless is a strange one in that the more you watch, the more difficult it becomes to make an investment. This is especially true when a band already has wireless components in it that can cause interference. As a bass player in a 6 piece who recently got the endorsement of 4 other band members to make a WIEM investment, I still can't decide the best value to buy, and since I'm spending others' money I really want to make the right choice, which seems to change weekly in this category due to innovation and competition. Have you considered offering bands a monetized service to make unbiased purchase recommendations? At this point I would pay you $150 just tell me what to buy, and I think there are at least 1000 other people who would do the same. How to do it: 1) publish a questionnaire that asks everything you need to know in order to make the right recommendation for each unique situation. - number of players - existing wireless components - future desire to add other wireless tech - existing mixer tech and in/out ports - budget - location - type of gigs - etc. It could be 6 pages long. People fill this out. 2). Have an inbox that people send their completed questionnaire to with a paypal account attached to it. $150/response 3). Write a report with recommendations for each situation you see. You get paid $150 to be objective....not slide sales leads to vendors. However you do have the power to increase the value of your service to me by having these manufacturers offer discount codes. So I pay you $150 for objective current expertise, but your service also qualifies me to save $50 in discounts, so $150 is actually only $100. I think you could help a lot of people demystify wireless while monetizing beyond just eyeballs and asking for like-smashes. B). When does Scott Uhl approach an offshore tech OEM to develop a branded line of wireless products made to his specs and branded SU. Wouldn't a company like D Debra embrace this kind of opportunity to make kit for others? Why wouldn't Fender want to create a bundled line of SU series Fender wireless gadgets? Band in a box bundles: - for WIEM - for WIEM + wireless mics - for WEIM + wireless mics + guitars The more you add, the busier and less reliable it gets, but not if you design it all to work together upfront. I see under-capitalized opportunities.
