Mad Max takes place either in 1985 or, at most, 1987. The placard on the front gate of the Halls of Justice reads "Established 1983." Additionally, the sign that reads "High Fatality Road" in the scene introducing us to Max Rockatansky has graffiti on it that says, "... was here December 1985." These are very subtle but distinct bits of information for the audience deliberately inserted by Miller in his great way of not forcing exposition on the audience that they don't necessarily need to know.
