This gear dump covers everything I carry on a 5-10 day backcountry hunt for elk in September/early October. Everything is carried in by backpack and on foot. I like to hunt roadless or walk in only areas if possible to eliminate some of the crowd. Leave a comment if you have any questions and I will respond!

Awesome. Love the name of each item and the reason why you choose to them which shorten the learning curve for a beginner like myself. Thank you for making these videos!

Glad you got some value out of the video. I think I’ll try to put together an updated one before this fall with some of my updated gear and more things I’ve learned just since last year with some of my equipment.

Check out a MEST KoreTemp Poncho. Will work as rain gear, tarp and/or ground cloth. I use a 1/8 EVA ground pad 5’x8’. Lightweight ground cover. FYI: Bladders get easy leaks. I use Smart Water bottles, tough as nails. Get a good sleeping bag…15 degree. Caribou game bags. Tip of the hat to your tent an stove..nice!

Great video! It has to be difficult talking to a camera. Well done though! Always great content!

Headed out for an archery elk hunt late September 2024 in the Bitterroot. I’m from the midwest so wondering if insulated boots are must? I bought some non-insulated but thinking I should return them and go with insulated boots. Appreciate the the videos and was fired up to see your Dad get his bull. Thanks

Thanks for watching man. I wouldn’t worry too much about having insulated boots (even in late September). What boots did you buy? I just did a spring bear hunt with some snow and had 200 gram boots. I think it’s more important just to have a way to dry them out if they get wet.

My dad had that same rangefinder and he was having problems with it also and we sent it in and they replaced it with the ranger 1800.

Just get some tyvek from the hardware store for the tent floor. 3 bills for a cuben fiber floormat is not a wise spend.

Yea it’s been over 2 years now since I made this video and I’m still just using a seek outside ground cloth for like $12. Would be nice to have a ground tarp that also serves as a quick rain shelter but hasn’t been a priority to date.

@@heavyhunts hey ,tyvek is free sometimes. That's the white stuff you see wrapped on lumber piles and on houses being built. You can get plenty to experiment with, and its light and strong too. Not quite as strong as dcf, but definitely strong enough and being so cheap makes it way better to experiment with. You can cut a small piece and make a poncho out of it, just spray paint it whatever colors you need. Instant pocket size shelter for you and your pack. It's great stuff. As much an idea for you as anyone else in the same boat watching. Hope ya had a good year this year, now it's just shed hunting season around here. Be safe.

Great info! What’s the total weight of your backpack with your rifle?
@heavyhunts
@heavyhunts 2 года назад
I’m not exactly sure what the final weight was but I think it was close to 45-50 with all my gear. The gun is about another 10 lbs I want to say. I figured the weight of the rifle at one point but it has since slipped my mind.

You lost me at “ i don’t carry rain gear”. This is a recipe for disaster. I have had to down load a hypothermic hunter due to lack of rain gear. i do not go anywhere if someone eon’t carry rain gear...

I just feel like water soaks through even some of the better rain gear. I have the tarp to pitch over me if the rain is heavy which guarantees no water against my clothes or body. I’m not saying rain gear is a bad idea. I have just found other ways to deal with inclement weather so far. Between the tarp and the Cimarron shelter with stove I have found that to work well for me. I think you just need to know your limits and equipment. With that being said the weather can change in a hurry and it definitely never hurts to have rain gear with you. My gear system is constantly evolving as I learn new things and have new experiences.
