Do you like hunting, fishing and camping? SUBSCRIBE HERE: www.youtube.co...
The high buck hunt happens every September in the backcountry of the Cascade mountains of Washington state. This year, Casey and I head into the mountains in search of mule deer. This backcountry mule deer hunt had a lot of ups and downs but the mule deer win this round.

It's very hard to get a buck during high buck season. I've never had any luck myself. I still go every year.

Well that's kinda relieving to hear haha This is my first year doing the high hunt. I'll probably still continue going too 😂

@@CascadeBackcountry maybe we can work some out next year. I just bought a drone and it should be in pretty soon. Would make a fun little collab. I'm expecting this channel to start taking off soon because I'm now putting some effort into it.

Well at least you tried, hats off to you two. Im down with a cold that wont let go. The deer numbers are down everywhere. If you watch the other hunting channes the'll say the same. Deer and wildlife numbers are down big time with only pockets of places where numbers are high. So dont beat yourself up over not getting one. Though to bad you didnt bring something to get that grouse, that would have made dinner taste alot better.

We gave it the old college try but with only two days to really hunt we just couldn't quite get it done. Yeah I dunno if it's deer numbers, time of year or location etc but I can't find a deer to save my life this year! Hope ya feel better!

I fully admit my situation is very different, but early in the season I do better finding deer on north facing slopes, or areas that receive less direct sunlight. I think the slightly cooler temps keep them moving more in the daylight as their winter coats come in. Likewise, on a very cold late season day, you can find them stacked up on south facing slopes. As with all big game hunting, the commodity effect applies... whatever feature is shortest in supply will be highest in demand.

Our original plan was to hunt a large, north facing bowl BUT the absence of that trail made it so we couldn't reach our original destination and we had to kinda make up the hunt on the fly. There were a series of events during this hunt that kinda stumped us... like the missing trail and the appearance of another hunter camped about 1000 ft away from us. I didn't really express that in the video though. We tried to adapt and overcome but with only two days to hunt, we just didn't get it done. Next time! Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching!

OnX got me last year with one of those non-existent trails haha.

Those bastards! It really was the beginning of the end for us on this trip. We tried though! It'd be nice if these mapping apps like OnX and Gaia could/would differentiate between old trails and active trails

If there is super fresh sign, hunt it for 1 day & move on! I have better luck where there is old, yet active sign, knowing that they are about to roll thru soon!

Good point! Thanks. I am fairly inexperienced with the backcountry deer hunting so I'm still teaching myself all the tricks!

1:05 This is a HUGE problem with OnX, specifically with motor vehicle trails. Just because the trail is on OnX, doesn't mean that it's open for use. On National Forest, and National Grasslands, the trail needs marked and is on the Motor Vehicle Use Map put out by the Forest Service. I'm tired of people cruising the Grasslands on an unmarked trail that they shouldn't be on, or going through gates that they shouldn't be going through. I really wish OnX would remove unmarked trails that aren't on MVUMs and have a popup stating to make sure you are on marked trails. Just a pet peeve of mine after antelope hunting gets worse and worse every year from idiots driving around where they should because of OnX.
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, both OnX AND Gaia showed this as an active trail. I agree, it'd great if these trails were marked as no longer in service. Thanks for the comment!

I didn't see any bucks at Wenatchee national forest either last Saturday... Except for one already strapped to the back of a Razor. FYI I dm'd you about grouse on your Instagram.

Thank-You for your video-I’m no expert, but after the extremely hot and dry summer we had this year is it possible that the animals were hunkering lower in the valleys near food and water. Just discovered your you tube site-very informative, good scenery etc.

Durring your intro, we cut that trail years ago & it is now over grown. There wasnt enough activity in the last few years to keep going back so we stopped maintaining it. I told my buddy not to mark it as a public trail but his dumbass did it anyway.
@CascadeBackcountry
@CascadeBackcountry 10 месяцев назад
Oh dang! Yeah that trail not being there was the beginning of the end for us. We didn't make it to our original destination and ending up hunting a spot we didn't intend to originally. You tell your buddy he screwed us! haha just kidding. We still had a great adventure!
