What if you’ve already contributed a portion to your Roth at the start of the year, but your income increased in the middle of the year over the limit? Does the remaining portion have to be contributed through back door Roth ?
It doesn't matter what your income is in the middle of the year or when you make the contribution. What matters is your "Adjusted Gross Income" (AGI) at the time of filing taxes: www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/amount-of-roth-ira-contributions-that-you-can-make-for-2023 Here's some info on how to handle things if you've already contributed, and you'll be over the limit: www.investopedia.com/what-to-do-if-you-contribute-too-much-to-your-roth-ira-4770686 There's no down-side to doing BDR compared to going straight into Roth (other than the extra steps). So if you find yourself in that middle-ground, just doing it all as a BDR will likely be a "safer" route.
