Such a gold mine, this Backer Corner. I especially appreciated the hints on how to achieve flourish with fewer strings. Any chance there will be a tutorial on how to rein in the wild right hand, e.g. control drills for focused strumming on middle strings?

Nice, pithy mandate there (great flourish with few strings). And that's a great idea to make a video about focusing the right hand for those partial chords. Stay tuned.

Some chords can really have different names really. I remember Daithí Sproule of Altan wondering about the naming of a chord he wasn't sure which name to give it 😛

Beautiful (x3). And your right hand technique is amazing Matt. Wish you'd do some video's on right hand training :)

What a great series, Matt! Your backer corner is really helpful. Thank you so much for your effort! Like the last 2 weeks I made a chord chart with the chords you mention in the video. You'll find it on my blog at: dadgad-guitar.blogspot.com/2020/05/matt-heaton-chord-ideas-for-g-major.html I hope, I got all the chords correctly. Now I will have to translate these to bouzouki. A new task :-)

Reminds me a bit of Nicolas Quemener's style. Do you know him, Matt? He played with Arcady, Gilles Servat, Conor Keane and Bláth and Ronan Le Bars and Audrey Le Jossec. Love your teaching. I wish it was there 10 years ago when I started learning to play Celtic trad music

That sort of ‘open’ G chord has become my standard, especially in Irish music. I still often fall into the ‘full chord’ trap on the other chords though. Do you plan on doing any DADGAD tutorials? I’ve been exploring that and drop D more and more.
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 4 года назад
Good idea. Let's get Matt to talk about different tunings. He uses Standard, Drop D and also DADGAD with great frequency. And also open G sometimes. Stay tuned!

Great video! Just a heads up, the audio is entirely mono/in the left channel. I had this same problem with a few of my videos. If you can't find a way to record in stereo, one can double the left-hand audio to the right in Audacity afterwards.
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 4 года назад
thanks for that, Everest.\! Good idea on just doubling the audio afterwards to be stereo... but I'll be the Heater could figure out a way to record in stereo.

Matt, what plectrum are you using? Sounds like around .46? Do you switch plectrum depending on the song? Droning the top strings is ideal for me with a .38 but that's to weak to pick the base strings. Difficult. Any advice on picks and strings? thx
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 2 года назад
Matt uses a .72 Dunlop nylon pick (the dark grey ones). And Elixir medium strings. Matt thinks the different picks sound really different, but I don't....

Matt, you speak about palm muting around 07:50 but do not go into it . Viewing what you do, it is not obvious how you do it. I have tried having my palm resting on the bridge but your approach seems different, looser & more dynamic. Could you elaborate? Thanks.
@ShannonHeatonMusic
@ShannonHeatonMusic 2 года назад
good, Brian. I'll get Matt to do a short installment about palm muting!

oh, you are so kind! We are asking for donations (only if folks are still working) during our Saturday sessions... and also on my Quarantine request corner. But my regular installments of TOTM lessons and other instructional offerings have always been our gift to trad players. We learned from many generous players, and it is our pleasure and privilege to share what we've learned.
