Had the same problem and the carburetor was out of sync. Re synchronized them adjusted the pilots and it took care of the popping , main thing was synchronize them , huge difference!

@@KevinThomasAdventures for sure I fought this issue for a couple weeks of and on . I purchased the bike 1984 700 virago very cheap it had sat garaged for 15 years with the gas in it . About 3 weeks ago , went through the carbs tank etc. finally found the carbs I rebuilt were in fact good now but way out of sync , thing runs awesome now . Anyway I hope this can help someone else find their popping issues!

I have a 85 700 virago. recently straight piped it the pipes are pretty short. but haven't re jetted the carb or tuned it since I converted straight pipes. I plan on converting from 2 carbs to a single carb with the mikuni vm30 do you have any advice?? I'd appreciate it, thank you.

@@zanecid1232 I haven’t done the conversion on one of these so I am not sure. I will say keep digging for information. Anything that aids in adjustability will help as these are set to run very lean. Let me know how it goes I would be curious about the process and result.

Octane is just a fuels ability to resist premature combustion from pressure. Fuel exploding before the spark plug goes off is no bueno. Higher octane doesnt burn hotter or better. Higher compression engines have to resist premature combustion and need higher octane

Putting 93 octane in a bike with 8.3 to 1 compression ratio is futile and unneeded expense. If it is back firing, it needs to be checked out. More than likely you have an issue with carbs or the intake track. They ran fine new, so think about that and try to find the reason yours no longer runs like you would prefer. I believe the owners manual calls for 87 regular.

No leaks. These were designed to run lean as an emmision reduction. Just a funky design that can be challenging to dial in.

@@KevinThomasAdventures I get that, I stripped my xv1100 down to bare bones and did a single carb conversion and the smallest air leak resulted in back firing as with most bikes, I bought brand new carb manifolds and gasket sealed them on, man it now runs like a dream. I diagnosed it by spraying a little high octane spray on the carb manifolds whilst the bike was running, if the revs increase you know you have an air leak, checkout my video ‘tired virago gets reborn’

This is great! Question - If I want to replace the bulbs in my dash, make them brighter - can you do a video on that? Virago 1100 1998

Unfortunately we sold the Virago a few months ago. Best bet would be to replace bulbs with direct fit LED bulbs. Best of luck!
