My unboxing and review of the Backgammon Galaxy VOID board, another creation made in collaboration with FMGammon of Istanbul, Turkey. This board retails for $999 in the Backgammon Galaxy online Store, and I believe the price includes worldwide shipping.
This is a full-size tournament board, quite heavy (likely 15+ pounds), with a black leather exterior. It comes with a nice carry bag, which holds the board perfectly.
When closed, the board measures 20.25" x 15.5' x 3.25". The checkers are 44.2mm wide and almost 12mm thick.
The stock setup out of the box comes with the black on grey surfaces, and beautiful matte black and white marbled flat checkers (not dished). I personally find the black/grey surface a bit difficult to play on without having to keep my mind on the points and their colors when moving checkers. I find the low amount of contrast a bit off-putting, but that's just me. Your mileage may vary.
Of course, the cool feature of this board, and other BG/FMGammon boards, are the interchangeable playing surfaces, which come in a variety of colors, as do the matte checkers. One can choose between the Earth colors (green/white), the Neptune colors (blue/white), or purple, orange, or a muted grey (Moon). Very diverse options.

Wonderful board and a great video again, congrats! The original Void board is slightly too "grey" for my taste, but the Galaxy Neptune version is really awesome! Have many good games on it! Lupe, Funny, for some reason, that’s the one color I could NOT remember from my visit in San Antonio, when they had multiple VOID boards to play on. Earth colors on the VOID board are probably very nice. Enjoy! ✨💚🤍✨

That is a great question, lorderik237. It made me think about what I really like in a backgammon board. My conclusion is that I prefer the versatility of the Earth board. Not only is the removable bear off tray cool, but it also allows one to use the handy pouch in lieu of the trays, by preference. I also like the compact geometry of the Earth board, but only as compared to the Void board. I like my other ‘full-size’ tournament boards just fine. Hope this helps! Cheers! ✊🏼🎲🎲

I like the board. The checkers marbled looks cool but I don't really care for the matte finish. They just look unfinished. I like a gloss look for my checkers. The Neptune inserts is way better than the dark grey inserts. I am going to wait until FM Gammon has a deal on their Dark Ayse board. I can change out the nickel plated hinges for oil rubbed bronze hinges. Which should give me a similar look to the VOID board.

Good eye! This board was sent to me by Backgammon Galaxy after a customer returned it. Perhaps it was due to the un-anchored bear-off tray pieces, I don’t know. I haven’t taken any steps to glue them back as of now. I do like the board, but it is a BEAST!

Hello Justin, Have you tried using fmgammon surfaces on the VOID? does it fit perfectly?

The VOID board is made by FMGammon, so the various surfaces fit perfectly into the board. The Galaxy board is another Backgammon Galaxy / FMGammon creation, also with interchangeable surfaces, but the dimensions are much more compact. Just make sure you’re buying the correct size surfaces and they will fit perfectly! Cheers! 🎲🎲

The board looks slightly chipped on the bear off trays. Was it that way out of the box?

Tim, this particular board was sent to me by Backgammon Galaxy after it was returned for the cosmetic issues you seem to have noticed. Doesn’t have any impact on how the board plays, but I would want a flawless board out of the box for this price.

JP - Yes, the VOID board and the Earth board that I own both have magnets embedded in the edge of the board, so it stays shut. The Monte Carlo board also, although I’ve only played on one, I don’t own one. Cheers!

Rafał, Good question, although I’m not aware presently whether the VOID board comes with precision dice. It should, for the price you pay! If you plan to purchase one, I would request a set of precision dice, along with an alternative set of playing surfaces. Cheers and good luck! 🎲🎲✨✌🏼

I got the Monte Carlo Board last month, a really Beauty! It came up with two black and two white dices by FM in smaller dimensions and definitly not precision. Not bad at all, but yes for the price you pay for the Board it has to be Precision Dice of course! So I contacted Tue from BGGalaxy, and I got a set of Precision Dice for free, was also able to choose the color I prefered 😎 Greets from Germany!

Hi Justin, If you had to choose between BG Galaxy Earth, Void Board, FM Gammon Ayse. Which would you choose. Portability is a small consideration. Or I could spend a bit and go with Mete or Onur. Thoughts ase welcome.

R.S. - Excellent and timely question! I am in the process of reviewing my entire board collection, and I do note that I play on my BG Earth board more than some of my other boards. I like its compact size, the depth of the playing field, the beautiful checkers, and the interchangeable surfaces. Portability is a 'small' consideration, but still a consideration. My personal taste tends to favor the larger tournament-size board, so either the Onur or Mete boards would likely be my personal choice for a new board, right now. That said, I do really like my Earth board, but the heft and gravitas of a tournament-size board is hard to beat, and the Mete and Onur boards are absolutely gorgeous, and have the interchangeable playing surfaces as well. The BG Void board, and the FM Ayse boards are nice, but not as nice, in my opinion, as the Earth board, or the Onur & Mete tournament boards. Hard to choose, good luck, and cheers!

Justin, Thank you for you input! You are the go to guy for BG advice! If I wanted to get something less expensive and more mobile for now to make sure my son (10) gets into it before splashing for heirloom quality what would you recommend? In the category of say $400 or less. I have a hard time deciding between the FM Yaldiz or 19” Silverman and Co. I am also intrigued by the Walnut FM Gammon wood board ($700) that fits mag surfaces without magnets. I think your travel board from 869 is cool! What size is it and how much did it cost? Yaldiz or 869? I would like something that is nice that I could take to cafe, friends, etc. Also FM BGWC is nice. Kind of a cross between Earth Board and Yaldiz but leatherette covered. . I might miss the wood frame though. Decisions, decisions!

@@RS-dd8xr - I’m really sorry I didn’t respond to this comment in a more timely fashion! You likely have already taken the plunge on a board appropriate for getting your son addicted to the game, but I think any lower priced FM board is perfect for that task. The 869 boards are different; not as focused on the wood-framed playing surface, or the interchangeable surfaces. A Yaldiz board might be perfect, something in the $400 range perhaps? Hope you find something perfect! 🎲🎲✌🏼✨

Alejandro, I believe the dice I use in this video are not the original dice that came with this board. I’m not sure the VOID board comes with precision dice, but I hope it does.

You will likely need to find a backgammon-related online store, but I do know that they sell them in the Backgammon Galaxy online Shop, and also on the FMGammon website (fmgammon.com). Im sorry but at this they droped the Ball on this one The quality is Not there the packeging was atrocios The tray was or is damaged 4:11 and generell Not Good this time 900€ for That? I was thinking about getting this board but I'm not at all happy with how this was packaged and shipped. Looks like the bored got really damaged. At 4:08 where you trying to fix it?. Also RIP kitchen table...

Beanfly, Full disclosure is that this board was shipped to me after being returned for minor issues, although you do note that there is one point where I tuck a piece of the bearoff tray back into place. I can only say that I think FMGammon and Backgammon Galaxy are doing their best to ship a perfectly made board and that they will stand by their product. I’d buy again with confidence myself. Finally, this is a massive board and quite heavy. Plays very nicely! 💙🤍💙🤍

Hey Justin! I like your videos and your reviews. I have to say that the Void board is very ugly. All the backgammon galaxy inserts are very ugly. The checkers look nice but I wouldn’t pay such a premium price solely for the checkers. I hate the board and the ugly colors they come in. I think backgammon galaxy boards are a rip off.

Lilit, Thanks for your comment! I agree that the VOID board isn’t for everyone. The muted greys kind of threw me off. I do like the blue Galaxy inserts, and the checkers, though. I disagree that the Earth board is a rip-off. True, it’s not cheap, but it is well built, and can be customized many ways. Your mileage may vary! Cheers! 💫🎲🎲🙌🏼
