Backgammon Opening Concepts: A proverb a day keeps the losses away

Backgammon is one of those games that’s easy to learn, but hard to master. And it’s for that reason that it’s such a compelling game. The truth is though, that like most things, it takes study and discipline to get better. If you’re anything like me, you want to get better. There’s only so many times you can take the royal beating you receive from your wife without questioning, why am I so bad at this? And although there’s many ways to improve, like online videos, taking lessons, courses, or Extreme Gammon, today we’re talking about proverbs.

Love that you enjoy this as a couple, my wife and I have been getting into backgammon after finding a cheap used set at a thrift store. We’ve been trying to play a few games each day since then. Thanks for sharing this content!

I love all three of his books and probably the last one (Back Checker Strategy) is my favorite. The other two books had stuff I knew already (at least partially) but BCS just opened a complete new way of looking at the game for me.

Hi Sebastiaan! So glad you’re enjoying them! 😀 I’m really trying to bring the beginners perspective to the table. Oh nice! I haven’t heard of that one. I just looked it up. I love the cover art, so cool! The fantasy/fiction nerd in me wants to get it for that reason alone, haha Thanks for watching and cheers!

So glad to hear! 😁 It's still one of my favorites and I return to it often. The parables are just phenomenal. If you ever get a chance to meet, Michy, he's a really nice guy! I'm hoping to see a new one soon as well! I've got a few in the works, but yes, finding the time lately has been a challenge. We're expecting our second any day now. Hopefully a new video will be out by early March. Cheers my friend!

@@Flactoid1 Oh, I always want more backgammon boards, haha. The Earth Board from Backgammon Galaxy would be great, but I have to save up for that one. I've got seven boards currently, so I'm holding off for now, haha. Has your Wycliffe come in yet? Let me know all about your Crisloid once it arrives. New board day is the best!

Great video again. I love reading backgammon books. i remember when I first learned backgammon, it was a pretty chaotic game when playing against another complete beginner. It was a constant back and forth hitting contest, cause neither of the players knew what they were doing. My enjoyment of the game increased tremendously after I started studying it. Backgammon might seem like a simple game on surface, but there is so much depth under the surface, which is one reason I love it. Personally I like the math in the game, but what's so cool about backgammon is that the math is not just some abstract thing with numbers that happens in your head, but you can see it on the board right in front of your eyes. Magriel's book is amazing, although partly outdated. Bill Robertie's 501 Essential Backgammon Problems and Modern Backgammon are great, a well as Marc Olsen's books. I'll probably buy some of Michy's books next, probably Opening Concepts, cause openings are super important. I'm currently reading Olsen's Cube Like A Boss, since cube play is by far my weakest link.
@blunderblots
@blunderblots Год назад
Hey Jim! Thank you and thanks for watching! 😀 What would you say your favorite backgammon book is? I definitely want to pick up Magriel's book. It just sounds like it's a pivotal piece. I have Robertie's 501 Essential Backgammon Problems. I try to go through a few problems at a time. I don't have Modern Backgammon though (I'll add it to the list). I've read Marc's Basics to Badass book and I really liked it. There definitely isn't a shortage of books out there that's for sure. Cheers! 😃

The chaos of constant hitting is how it started on my end as well, haha. The more I'm learning about it the more I'm enjoying it as well. It's just so much fun! I've never been great at math, but I think this is a gateway to really enjoying the math and like you said you can see it on the board right in front of your eyes. Great way to put it! I want to pick up Cube Like A Boss as well. I'm pretty hopeless with the cube currently, haha. Cheers!

Michy is one of the best for teaching the game. I also learned a lot from Marc Olsen. For our backgammon club I use a picture of Michy and the title for game night is, "Are You Ready To Roll The Dice"? Yes he is definitely one of my favorite players to learn from.

Well, I am learning like you and your videos are well done in terms of content and technically. I am currently going through Marc Olen’s book How to Not Suck at Backgammon. I live in the Quad City area and there is not backgammon club here. There is one in Madison, WI and in Peoria, Il. I am working on getting my wife to play as I would rather play in person than online, but may have to go online to get more playing in. I am wondering about getting a club together. Any recommendations on that?
@blunderblots
@blunderblots 2 месяца назад
Thanks so much! That means a lot! I got that one too. It's been great! We didn't have a club closer than an hour and a half near us either (Madison and Milwaukee). One of the players we met at a tournament ended up starting one near us. We're a small club, but it's a lot of fun. It's definitely a challenge when there aren't places near you to play. I would say venture to your closest club once to see how things are run and get a feel for it. Then it's just getting word out and slowly building up from there. Also, getting to a backgammon tournament is a ton of fun and well worth checking out! If you haven't seen it already you can find clubs and tournaments on USBGF's website. Also, I much prefer playing in person too, but playing online is sometimes the only way to get matches in. Backgammon Galaxy and Backgammon Studio Heroes are good places to play online. Cheers!

@@blunderblots I have no favorites because I love them all. My problem with most backgammon books is they're far too broad. I love Michy's books because he takes a slice of the game and explains it in detail with proverbs. Perfect for me
