I use a 6" bucket for stumps. You get more power in a small area than the 12" for some of those longer roots. I'd have had that stump out with the backhoe in 2-3 minutes.

I have the Artillian bucket. I have had limited success but I cannot get all the way around my target. I also have seeing where I am digging. I did make a good trench for burring a wire.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
There is a learning curve and it take some practice. I lift the bucket just high enough so I can see the underside of where the bucket is and then once lined up I curl the bucket up to be in line at about a 45 degree angle. Keep on tractoring!

One application the stump bucket excels at is transplanting small trees. I have a hobby of planting small Oaks/Maples and Hickory trees from seed. When they get about 4-6' tall, I transplant them to various areas on the lot. (Someday, someone will wonder where all the nice trees came from. Just about everything else around the 6 acres is Cottonwood, the worst trees in the world.) The stump bucket does a great job digging up the small trees without destroying the root structure. 4 digs around the root area, and you can lift the entire tree up, and move it to the new location, without ever getting off the tractor. You just have to remember to dig the new hole before uprooting the transplanted tree.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
I bet it would work really well for transplanting trees. Almost like a tree spade. Keep on tractoring

Hello Jon, Love the channel!!! So I finalized my purchase of my brand new 2021 BX23S this morning! YEA!!!!! I am very interested in the Artillian fork frame system. Curious of the size you have on yours and what you would recommend for the small sub compact BX23S.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
Hey Stephen! This is the fork frame I have. www.artillian.com/product/3000-lb-ssqa-pallet-fork-frame/ It is very strong and lightweight. I have 42 inch forks but I also have a larger L3940 that having the longer forks for makes sense. If I just used it with my BX23S I would go with the 36 inch forks. The Artillian system is great because as you need attachments such as a grapple or trenching bucket you can add Artillian products to the same fork frame. Top notch quality also 👍 Congrats on the new tractor, I'm sure you'll find many uses for it through the years. 😁👍 Keep on tractoring!

How's she goin'? The trenching bucket sure does a number on those roots. Being able to move the tractor around and quickly reset you attack angle makes all the difference I think!! Take care!!

This video may have saved me $7500.00 !!! My wife has been after me for not buying a backhoe from day one. She watched this and asked which is cheaper I said stump bucket. She said we need to buy one :)
@busman1630
@busman1630 3 года назад
Read my reply to Mark Bielick's post below. Cheaper yes. But along with that come cheaper results. If you are removing 1" or 2" saplings maybe, anything bigger... forgetaboutit.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
This will depend on the size of stumps you have. If you're removing stumps and bushes of similar size as I was, this trenching bucket will work better and faster. Anything bigger you'll either want a bigger tractor a backhoe or rent a mini excavator. Keep on tractoring!
@olcowhand
@olcowhand 3 года назад
While the trencher definitely is useful and worthy, I did notice the tree chosen for backhoe in timed comparison was a MUCH larger tree! A couple inches more diameter greatly increase the root zone. That said, I like the trencher attachment.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
It was larger but I know that with the trenching bucket I still would have had it out faster because I would have been able to use the tractor momentum and power to cut through the roots with the trenching bucket. Keep on tractoring!

I totally disagree with your conclusion. I've got both the stump bucket and the BX23s backhoe. The stump bucket does a good job on tiny stumps, but it doesn't have the reach to get to larger stumps. You spend all day digging a large hole to get at the stump.The backhoe with a 4" BExpanded trenching bucket is far faster at removing larger stumps than the stump bucket. It digs twice as deep per stroke as the standard bucket, and the teeth are much sharper. You position your machine once, cut on both sides of the stump, move once, and the last dig pops the stump out. No way the trenching bucket can keep up. Using the standard backhoe bucket is not a good comparison. Stump removal is not what it is designed for. I still like your videos, and you do a great job explaining things to the viewers. It's just this one doesn't make sense to me.
@busman1630
@busman1630 3 года назад
I would have to agree also with Mark. Not a fair test. Had you tried to use the Artillian bucket on the same root you used the backhoe on... it would have taken far longer than 11.5 minutes to remove that same stump. For small stumps, it has it's place I suppose. Although Artillian calls it a trenching bucket, I would not want to use it for trenches either. I speak from experience as I have a John Deere 1025R with 260B backhoe. I think that folks who buy this Artillian bucket based solely on your recommendations and poor test procedures will be sorely disappointed.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
Mark - I agree with you, I should do a better job explaining that a larger stump is no match for a trenching bucket. I meant this video to be for people dealing with small tree stumps and bushes. The standard backhoe bucket is best for digging dirt. Thanks for the feedback. Keep on tractoring!
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
Busman - I disagree, I'm positive it would have taken me far less time with the trenching bucket. The problem was I couldn't cut the roots with the backhoe, I would have cut them much easier with the trenching bucket. Keep on tractoring!
