In case you didn't know, you can absolutely make a delicious chocolate cake while out backpacking! Check out this video of me making a backpacking chocolate cake in the FryBake.
NOLS Cookery Backpacking Chocolate Cake Recipe:
(For the 8" pan in this video I did half the recipe)
- Serves 4 from a 12-inch fry pan -
1 1/2 cups baking mix
1/2 cup flour
2/3 cup cocoa
2 level Tbs. powdered egg (or 2 real eggs)
Pinch of Salt
4 Tbs. brown sugar or honey
1 1/2 cups cold water (approx. - for a pourable batter)
2 to 3 Tbs. butter, melted
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix all dry ingredients. Add liquid ingredients and mix until lumps are gone. Pour into greased, flour fry pan. Cover and bake, using a twiggy fire, 15-25 minutes or until done.

Success!!! Awesomeness. I will have to try it with the Caldera cone system as I still haven't bought the fry bake yet but it's on my list. Thanks for sharing man.

I'd be interested to see how it does in the Caldera.

Oh awesome! Let me know how it goes! Bring some good frosting cause the cake isn't super sweet.

I know I'm commenting on a relatively old video. This reminds me of my really old outback oven. The only downside was the kit had a relatively heavy pan. But it already came with a scorch buster, and also a cool "cover" that circulated heat to the top to make it more like an oven. I'm thinking just replacing the pan with the frybake pan and it would be near perfect.

Again, this looks wonderful! I was half joking about it, but I'm glad you found a way to make it work. Now you've got me more excited. I'm glad we won't have to pack along hostess cakes on that trip. We'll have to distribute the weight of it all among us.

Yeah, I am hoping to get away with my 38 liter pack, and packing in the fry bake would be pushing it, but I think it would be so good to eat something like this after two long days on the trail.

Backcountry Exposure It would definitely be something unique to do and enjoy in camp, but if it comes down to it, for the sake of saving weight and space, I'd be OK with keeping it all at the car and baking it when we got to back to the trailhead the next day.

I'll be honest, I didn't think that would work. Lol. Looks awesome! Backcountry Exposure fine desserts. Oh man, seriously I had no idea it would look that good.

It was awesome! I was skeptical as well cause I had never tried something this aggressive in the fry bake before.

Painful to watch you taking the lid off so many times but good one! Key to baking is let it be!

I bought this terrible jello no bake cake for my coworkers birthday (and some paper party hats to boot). I turned out being pretty gross. Had I been a true friend, I would have done this. lol. I'm impressed.

Nice job, although it would have cooked quicker if you didn't keep taking the lid off. Also if you can't use a twiggy fire another possibility is the backpackers pantry outback oven cover to retain heat

Ha ha, well I had to take the lid off a couple times for the video, but also to make sure it wasn't burning. I like that oven cover, but it's just one more thing to carry. Normally I wouldn't try to bake a cake in the middle of January either. ha ha. Thanks for the info and for watching!
