Along with the handkerchief/bandanna, I find a keffiyeh/shemagh is a must. It has a million purposes in every season and terrain. Ask me or look up some videos. Whether day hiking, camping, or backpacking, I’ll never forget at least one shemagh. I even use one of my shemaghs at the gym.

Cotton balls soaked in Vaseline. Just as effective, less weight and bulk.

Cotton balls soaked in Vaseline actually weigh more than one of these little fire blocks believe it or not. These fire blocks also burn longer. Both work well though. Thanks for sharing🍻

Buffs are nice for heat and cold. Soak it for evaporation cooling. Keeps warm air in when chilly. Your bandanna does that too, minus snot.

Gorilla tape not the whole roll but some a million different uses and IMO works great for a firestarter

The inreach mini can also serve as a way for the Garmin app to pull location for phones with only A-GPS. I always have my 2 dogs with me, for them I carry a few pills from the vet, caprofen and a stomach med that is similar to Zofran. They also run whistle GPS, so a USB cable from whistle that can reset the devices and extra attachments points which are small and very light, and light weight extra collars. Rope can serve as an extra leash

Chair Zero, and 2 inflatable pillows. Comfort is a huge factor for me. I have pinched weight in many other areas in order to make room for those things.

For years I have carried a 2x2 cotton square. Every thing I bring must have two or more uses. For the past 50 some years I have carried a 36" x 36" heavy duty cotton square. It is my wash cloth/Towel, emergency head, face and neck cover in extreme heat, wrap a major wound (which I have never had.) bed sheet, table cloth for feeling fancy, The square becomes my pillow case with my clothing inside. In the west we call that square a bandana not a hankie. On a whim I bought a 56" x 30" swim towel. I took out on my last bike tour I took the supersized towel instead of the cotton square and It worked great for multiple uses.

I take a Tushy Travel Bidet and top of the line TP! Its can be used directly on your butt, but I find its easier to just use it to wet a piece of TP and make your own 'wet-wipes'. (So really any water bottle/container will do), and I recommend bringing a good toilet paper, like charmin red or blue, (I like blue). The Charmin blue can handle being moistened without falling apart on your nether regions and is less waste/weight than wipes, (however I do bring wipes as well).. I also fill up the Tushy with hot water on cold nights and use it as a hand warmer. Tops BOB knife and Silky Gomboy. I can whip up a fire so fast using these two items, even when using just flint and steel.. but I do carry a lighter and some tinder as well. You can replace the hanky with a lighter pak towl? I carry two, one body size for my showers and a tiny one as a hanky to wipe sweat, snot etc.. its really easy to clean too.. Airblaster ninja suits. Great to keep you warm at night, but I also wear them with pants as 'normal wear' too.

You kinda look like James Hetfield the Metallica lead singer. As for "gear"-Vaseline, you can use it for Chafing and lip balm, plus the cotton ball firestarter. Baking soda for tootpaste. For a sitpad you can also just cut a piece of blue foam into a square. I sweat a lot also and last trip I used the Buff brand Buff as a sweat rag just didn't work very well, not absorbent enough.

Nice review. I also made a windshield cozy for my lunches. Freeze some component of your lunch, and it's all set until mealtime. I also carry a Kula cloth (pee rag), which works well for women. I also carry my Helinox chair... I'm old and love the luxury, and I'm willing to carry that 1 lb if it's appropriate for where we are going.

I’m very pro camp chair🍻 thanks for watching!
@gneer1062
@gneer1062 Год назад
There is a very simple substitute for a camping chair - a bag tied at the top with a rope and two holes in the lower corners. A tripod is made of sticks, a rope is knitted there, and another stick is passed through the bottom holes and placed on top of the tripod. You get a portable hammock chair.

Hey, just found your channel, great content. I get really bad eye burn on my bike, and it's almost impossible to wipe while you ride. (unlike backpacking where you can wipe while you walk) I found these fantastic headbands and skull caps from a brand called Halo. You should check them out. They seem dorky, but I'm not a fan of fashion...so I'm just happy that they 100% stop the sweat in my eyes. They have a thin silicone strap at the back of the band that channels the sweat down the side of your face. Sometimes leaves a line on my head, but that could be the helmet pressure too? Either way, this thing works, so I'll recommend taking a look. I use it on every ride now, winter or summer.

@@BackcountryTreks the 1 pound REI chair is good but the more expensive zero (?) comes with a feet mat that stops you sinking into the dirt which is nice. I have hip and knee issues from rugby, the chair is great. Might be too low for your back though.

Thanks for this and your other videos. How thick is the paracord you use for bear hangs?
@BackcountryTreks
@BackcountryTreks 2 года назад
I’m not sure. It’s a 50ft. roll bought from REI. Doesn’t need to be thick at all though. Zing it line works well too.

@BackcountryTreks
@BackcountryTreks 3 года назад
Hey thanks! I use an app called AllTrails for a lot of my route planning. There is a section of the AT that runs through the central Pennsylvania area. Also some decent trails in the Hamburg area. The AT runs through there as well. Upstate PA has some great spots if you’re willing to drive about 3 hours. But AllTrails has served me very well👍 check it out if you’re not familiar with it.

I've just watched two of your videos, both very useful. I have just one tiny suggestion on presentation: the intro music is too loud; no need for that -- content is sooo good that the crappy intro detratcts from the (good) content. Just my two bits.
