My Dad and Mom in their retirement volunteered for the Forest Service (@1990s) and actually lived in that Cabin (Lantz Bar) for the Spring/Summer/Fall season. One July my wife and I visited them and stayed there in the bunk house (the bldg behind the cabin). We stayed a week and loved it! BUT, the Forest Service who drove us in on a jet boat was not going to take us out of the Wilderness. UGH! So we hiked out, the exact hike you made in this video. Thanks for bringing up the memories. 👍🥾🥾
I enjoyed this, thanks for posting. My only experience in Frank Church was back in'19, I was camped just off the Magruder corridor right along Bargamin creek. I did an out and back following the creek towards the Salmon. Totally different looking topography from what y'all just hiked. It seems like, from my limited perspective (I have been to Mackay Bar, maybe 35 miles from Lantz??) that the Salmon R valley in general is different from the rest of the surrounding area.
Please update, I thought there too much snow still in blues, but maybe the drop in elev on that side and combo temps the melt is on? Ticks and Rattlesnakes, be safe.
Nice early season backpack trip, and not terribly far from Missoula. To experience the high country of the Frank Church, you have to do the Bighorn Crags. Fishing is not great on the Main Salmon, some good small mouth bass on the lower end. The Salmon River country is my favorite part of the world.
The bighorn crags are on the list! Yeah we got our ass kicked on the salmon several times in attempts for fishing we just backpacked the selway in idaho (this weekend) and had better success fishing, so that was a laugh.
Nice trek! Beautiful area. How accommodating do you think the area would be to hammock campers? Mainly concerned about the size and spacing of the trees.
Looks like a great trip and a snow free one at that! I thought that you were over in Washington, but have been going on trips in the Rockies... did you move east?
Claws indicate a canine. Cats retract their claws wolves don't. As a rafter this stretch of river is coveted hence, the river permit system and, is as close to heaven on earth as one can get!
