In this episode, we decided to take a trip to Mohican Memorial State Forest (Mohican State Park) in Ohio to backpack in the winter and the snow and freezing temperatures. The temperatures were below freezing, and it got as low as 1 degree fahrenheit, or possibly even -6 fahrenheit according to one person we talked to. We camped overnight in the snow. We hiked past Mohican Youth Academy towards Pleasant Hill Dam where we did some sledding. Before that we saw the Mohican covered bridge. We then saw Big Lyons Falls and Little Lyons Falls. The falls were frozen into big structures of ice. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the fire tower at Mohican. We used a number of trails including Pine Run Bridle Trail, Grouse Bridle Trail, Pleasant Hill Trail, and Lyons Falls Trail. We also saw the Clearfork Gorge National Natural Landmark Plaque.

I hope you see this! But last year this time it was rough for me. I was basically bed-ridden with anxiety and panic attacks. I was playing Adventure Archives on loop and it truly helped me. The positivity, the beauty of nature and camaraderie, and the sense of progression helped me through those struggles. From the bottom of my heart, thank you SO much. Your art helped me through my darkest days.

Probably been said below but: Snow gaiters will keep your legs dry. Chemical handwarmers are worth their weight in gold. if it's very cold you can put one under your gas cannister for cooking, it (usually for me) keeps the gas flowing. Hot water in a nalgene bottle wrapped in a sock at the bottom of your sleeping bag will bring the bag up to temp and help keep your feet warm. Changing into clean clothes will keep you warm. no matter how little you sweat their is always perspiration dampening your clothes. Put your boots in your bag so they don't freeze. (I usually turn the waterproof bag that I carry my clothes in inside out for the boots) Thanks for another awesome adventure!

The backpackers at 19:56 were me (front), my older sister and older brother (back). We were hiking to site 3, which is further down the trail. I remember being very worried we wouldn't get a site because we saw you guys at site 2 even though no one signed up for it. We feared there would be more people at site 3 who did the same thing and the hike down there would be all for naught. Fortunately we had the site to ourselves and it was a beautiful night. Temperatures dropped big time, but we were well prepared. The same skiers that came through your site also came through ours and we chatted for a bit. They were very nice, also mentioned it was -4 by their house which we were surprised about. We left in the morning before you guys, we said hello as we passed, I'm sure you remember! We also decided to walk on the frozen stream, those footsteps were ours! It was a lot easier than walking through the snow (we wished we had snow shoes for the hike down!). Going up that hill in the snow is a tremendous workout! We also visited the dam in the morning which was beautiful. I'd say the weather was perfect. We live close to Cleveland and we've been backpacking in Mohican for years year-round. We go there constantly, it never gets old. Winter camping has always been my favorite out there because the silence and scenery is unmatched, and no bugs! I'm happy to see you guys enjoyed a nice sunny morning, those seem to be very common when camping in Mohican!

What you saw was a 'dry dam'. It has no lake behind it, except when there is flooding downstream (in Coshocton). Then, it fills with water behind it, forming a temporary lake. It's designed as a lake during flooding, but used as recreational park during dry weather. It is quite an awesome thing to see, in person. I drove across the dam, before.

Cold weather camping suggestion: When building a fire set a few larger rocks in it to generate heat then just before retiring for the night place a rock in your sleeping bag to keep your body heat prolonged.
3 года назад
I hope nobody actually follows that suggestion, and ruins their sleeping bag. Just boil a pot of water, and pour it into your water bottle right away. Put the bottle inside a sock or a mitten, then put it inside your sleeping bag. It radiates warmth during the night, and you have water ready for the morning.
@lennariddell7540
@lennariddell7540 3 года назад
I had same method of preparation in mind something to wrap it in, radiating heat, and back to surrounding with little to no impact on environment or hiker. Less is more when it comes to hiking but yours works as well.

Guys, unsolicited advice. You brought plenty of food!great. But rember, in the cold you should eat earlier. Going to bed rite after eating can make you colder. Mohican is only 40 minutes from me, so hike it at least weekly, including the snowy days. Kuhl (sold at REI) has water repellent hiking pants. I normally don’t make suggestions to other backpackers, but wet pant legs in that kind of cold weather can be kinda uncomfortable at best and downright dangerous at worst. So glad to see a new episode. Missed the adventures these past few months. Even if you guys almost had to freeze you buns off.. (but thanks to the seat cushions, I bet they helped).. lol.. Waiting for more videos and hope you have better weather real soon.

Great videos! I don't think that's where the deer lie down. they will dig through the snow trying to find acorns. So if it was around an oak tree that would make sense.

I haven't overnight snow hiked in over 20 years. We occasionally get a dusting on the trails, but it's rare. Very nice!

the extra feet protection for sleeping is something i can heavily identify with don't forget to eat fat before bed when it's cold, so you can stay warm at night!

or drink a LOT of alcohol. One of the head chefs on board to Titanic drank something like a pint of whiskey before the ship went down, and even though he did get wet, he was able to stay “warm” because he was so drunk.

New subscriber, catching up with what I have missed… My dad raised me in long northern winters skiing and hiking only relying on woolen and sheepskin cloths… Also we would have a sled for the gear to pull behind. Needless to say, time to time, I could become part of that gear when my dad wished to speed up our journey. What a happy memories! Thank you for bringing them back to me! But, till these days, genuine fur shoes are the best to keep your feet warm in freezing temperatures at night. I wish I could teleport them to you back those two year ago!
