I started along Derrick Trail, connected with Highline Trail, headed east and then up See Canyon. Climbed to the top of the Mogollon Rim and walked old jeep roads into Turkey Beaver WQA (Wildlife Quiet Area). A WQA is basically a small wilderness with rules similar to other federal wilderness areas. Then I took Horton Springs back to the car. I was caught out in some pretty bad storms on this one. I ripped my rain jacket, broke my microphone and still had a great time. I forgot to mention in the video the paper map I show on camera was the National Geographic Trails Illustrated #852 for Hellsgate, Salome and Sierra Ancha Wilderness Areas. Enjoy!

Hey, I live in the area (along Ellison Creek a half mile south of the Highline) and I've hiked See Canyon quite a few times. I've seen coatimundi in the exact area of the See Canyon where you heard them, and have gotten a lot of crap from people when I try to tell them about it -- coatis are up there with "bigfoot" for creatures people don't believe exist in the Rim country. Super rare to the point where I've seen locals not know what they are when they see them! I was absolutely delighted to hear you heard them in that area!

I'm surprised you get pushback from people about Coatis in the area. There are official resources from the Forest Service, many conservation & wildlife groups that acknowledge their northern range extends to the base of the Colorado Plateau. I've seen & heard them many times all over Arizona.

@@WildlandExplorer Oh, I know. And the forest service has even confirmed they are in the area. There's still a lot of skepticism, and a lot of mistrust of what the forest service says -- and a ton of people who just don't know what a coatimundi is. Neat animals! I enjoy watching your videos -- I think we've hit a lot of the same trails.

Lol I thru-hiked the Highline in May and Sees Canyon TH was the same then. People everywhere. I thought an unleashed was going to take a chuck out of me 😬. Not a happy pooch. Great video!

Thanks! Yes it's crazy busy over there I was glad the more casual hikers filtered out in the 1st mile. I thought I was going to be camping in the middle of a college frat party, lol. How were the water sources in May along the Highline? Pretty reliable?

@@WildlandExplorer For the most part there was plenty of water. I carried 3.5 liters with an extra Cnoc 2 liter pouch for camping. I was able to camp near water every night except the first due to the restrictions at Horton Creek. But I dry camped near the power lines and it was close enough to both Tonto creek and Horton so if I ran out I would be fine. There are several small creeks from there to Washington Park. After that I think most hikers could carry a liter to Pine without having to worry due to many tiny creeks. I used Guthook for that section so the water resources were update. Dude Creek was beautiful and probably my favorite part of the hike. All the maps are misleading though. The hike is closer to 57 miles due to reroutes.

Those flat rocks are my favorite spot on the Highline Trail. They look like spaceships coming through the clouds.

I've been binging them as background noise/footage at work. I really like the long-form, 3rd person style. I sit here working watching your adventures and wish it was Saturday so my Hubby and I could be doing the same. We day hike every weekend. When we do Horton we break off the main trail and cross the creek just after it shows above ground and follow the other side as far as we can. Much less crowded and so many waterfalls. Liked the fact that you ventured down that FR off the Rim and went down into Beaver Canyon. Too bad you did not have time to explore Turkey. We love going off the beaten path and doing the non technical canyoneering thing. Did quite a few sections of East Clear Creek this summer. Jones Crossing off FR141 near Clint's Well is a nice late Spring hike after the Spring run off eases(head South, up Canyon at the bridge. water levels vary, may need to get your feet wet off and on). It could be an overnighter or more. Beautiful Canyon, easy walking. Watch for the cave on your left across the Creek up on a higher embankment tucked into a corner about 4 miles in. We only went in 5 miles. This part of ECC heads up towards the Rim for miles. Thank you for sharing. Where are you headed next!?

Much thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I actually had been meaning to walk the opposite side of Horton but a couple groups of backpackers were setup over there and I didn't want to disturb them - it was pretty early in the morning when I filmed that day. I actually only did a few parts of that side before switching back to the main trail before. I'll probably explore it more on my next dayhike over there - thanks for the info on the cave! There are some projects in the works in far eastern AZ and southern UT and then some lesser known southwest AZ wildernesses coming in winter but I don't want to jinx it by telling all here. :)

Always love your videos. Lots of good ideas of hikes to try. Did the whole Highline Trail last year. It is a fun but difficult (on the feet) trail. :)

Thanks again! I’d like to hike it end to end, almost did that recently but I’ve really been enjoying doing loops where you climb the rim. It’s cool to go between the red rock slow elevation and high forest. Something compelling about that for some reason. First time I hiked the AZ Highline I was expecting it to be flat, but I was wrong. 😂

@@WildlandExplorer TBH I was wondering about that trip, and this friggin' record setting heat 😂.. Pike's was sick, actually saw a momma moose and her new baby on the Crags Trail on the way up. It was a butt kicker of a hike, for sure. Super glad to hear you're not in pain!! What's on your radar? I'm open pretty much now going into fall/winter (as long as something nuts doesn't happen with schools opening).

Another great video man!! I really like how you create these loop trail routes. I really enjoy the Mogollon Rim my self. Do you think you'll be doing much backpacking out in the superstition mountains this winter with all the fires we've had here?

Much thanks! Yes I often hike alone so building these loops is more out of necessity than anything else. I do plan to do more video from the eastern superstitions this winter. Western Supes have pretty much all been covered many times. Will be interesting to see how the fires have done a number on the trails in the forested parts. I've seen video of a guy sinking halfway down to his knees in dark grey quicksand in Campaign Creek that was mostly ash from the woodbury fire.

Thanks! Panasonic G9 + Pana-Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-f/4. With the caveat that I use a fairly flat & unsharp profile that requires color grading & post processing.

Great vlog of the Rim trails, I know that intersection of the Highline Trail and Horton Springs coming from the parking lot, but where is the Horton trail coming down to Horton ?

Thanks! When you're coming up from below the rim when you get the intersection at highline Tr. there is a path going north to the falls. Next to the falls, to the left you can continue uphill north passing by some campsites (where I stayed the last night). That will lead you up to the rim. It's steep but cairned all the way to the top.
