Backpacking The Mogollon Rim - Babe Haught Horton Loop

This was a 3 day backpacking trip through a portion of the Mogollon Rim high country in Arizona. I start day 1 at the Hatchery Trailhead, hiking the Babe Haught Trail to the top of the rim and on to Knoll Lake for the 1st night. On day 2 I hike the General Crook Trail and road walk to Gentry Canyon/springs and then camp night 2. On day 3 I slide my butt down Horton Springs Trail, connect with the Highline Trail and complete the loop back to the trailhead.

I've noticed on my hiking trips that whenever the area is accessible to cars you have trash because trashy people are lazy and won't hike somewhere where they might have to put some effort into it , when the area is difficult to get to it's usually pristine. Thanks to all hikers and backpackers that leave no trace.

Fat people are inherently lazy. Most people that casually camp and leave trash are fat and gross. They lack self image, self discipline and self love and therefore they’re depressed and therefore don’t care about anything.

Another truly enjoyable video. I'm using your videos to plan some of my future trips to Arizona from So Cal. I like when you show your route using the map as in some of your other videos, that is very helpful. I appreciate that you are willing to explore into unknown areas, and then just turn around and go back if necessary. I do this often, which is why I usually hike solo. Often times other people get nervous and think you are lost when we are simply making mental notes for future trips. Keep up the good work my young friend.

Yep you get it. I get "lost" all the time, haha. There are a lot of great places to hike with no trails to speak of. Part of why I like drainages is it's hard to get actually lost lost.

I didn't know Arizona had that much green. I am gonna have to hit you up and pick your brain for some trail info. I went to the Superstitions last January, and am planning to go again in 2020. Sucks about the Plexamid, but youre not alone.

For sure, the rim area is green all the time but especially during the monsoon season. Just gotta watch out for those storms that break above your head in that area daily. I am disappointed at what happened with the Plex. It's a tent I tried hard to like. It does still pitch fine without those roof stays. But I'll tell you, with the reduced headroom and less tensioned walls it's no picnic in rough weather. Silver lining is ZPacks is making it right.

Completely agree on the online drama bit. I dont necessarily want more people out there but more people need to get out and sniff the roses. Also, I've never really explored the tonto because it's always so trashed. However, the Rim trail and doing a mini thru hike of the general crook trail are something I want to do.

I’d say do the Highline it’s in great shape and has some great views. General Crook is more of a “choose your own adventure” and get lost in the woods, lol. If that’s your type of thing.

Thanks! I would personally do that loop the opposite of how I hiked it in the video. Horton is easier going up than down.

Lol not really in particular, it always ends up being elk or bear. Or people. The one thing I am wary of up there is illegal grow operations. There have been several documented cases of hikers encountering them on the rim so if I hear something strange I’m more likely to avoid than investigate.

I agree with you so much about the gross amount of trash That campers leave behind, they drove there , how hard can it be to remove and take your trash out with you. We car camp and NEVER leave trash behind. It's so disheartening when we backpack to see what car campers have left behind.

It's unbelievable how much trash gets left behind at car camping sites - only takes a few to spoil it for everyone. Thankfully the backcountry sites out there are pretty good. I hope more people on youtube call attention to the litterbug problem in our national forests. Thanks for watching!

Spot on with more people getting outdoors. Especially the younger generation. Seems like I have to drag my kids out of the house forcefully. And yeah car campgrounds are horrible. 🤮

Thank you! Well on that trip there was no one out there on account of the rain. That's Arizona for you - no one goes out when it's raining, lol. Since covid, the Rim has gotten more popular in summer. I did another video in Sept 2020 from the area and saw a lot more people, at least on the popular trails. Once I got off trail there was no one.

It was a while back now but I think it was sometime in early August if I recall. Amazing temps. Could not have gotten above the low 80s. Probably high 50s at night. It's like 7-8 degrees cooler on the rim top. than the highline trail that runs at the base of it. Take rain gear out there. Thanks for watching!

Thanks! For sure, I wanted to do a Cabin Loop video - but there were recent fire closures that just got lifted. And FR95 on the north end at Bear Canyon is still closed off from the winter storm washout. I'll probably do a video soon combining AZT Blue Ridge and the east side of the cabin loop.

What kind of water filter/system is that?

It's a Sawyer Squeeze Filter. The water bags are by CNOC - 2 liters each. The gravity hose I think was sold as a kit by CNOC as well. Works great.
