Backpacking The Wonderland Trail | Mount Rainier 2021 | From Sunrise to Mystic Camp - Day 1 // In this video, I’ll take you with me as we set out to hike all 93 miles of the Wonderland Trail, around the base of Mount Rainier in 10 days.
Watch as we prepare the day before leaving for our hike by dropping off our food caches throughout the park, enjoy one last cooked meal that doesn’t involve boiling water, car camp at a pretty awesome dispersed camping spot and then in the morning, pick up our permit and head off towards our first tentsite of the trip, Mystic Lake.
Total Mileage: 9.5 miles
Total Ascent: 1,940.6 feet
Total Descent: 1,149.3 feet

Here it is...the first vlog of the Wonderland Trail video series! Watch as my trail family and I get our last preparations for the trip done and start off our trip for 10 days from Sunrise. On the first day, I got to face an old fear, which I'm so longer scared of anymore and ended the day with a wonderful dip in Mystic Lake.

My wife and I just did this hike at the end of July in 9 days. We also went counterclockwise and started at white river campground so we didn’t have to climb to sunrise on the last couple miles of the trip. Truly an amazing trip. Wild flowers were stunning. We got a walk up permit which was not hard if you do your homework. Do this trip and you won’t regret it.

That climb up to Sunrise from White River was tough on our last day. It was hot and I was getting attacked by flies. The flies were starting to break my spirit. Then I saw Rainier. 😊 Did you guys have to Ford the S Mowich River? The trail crew had just finished putting in the bridge the day before we got there. Bless the trail crews. ❤️
@jasonburkett3179
@jasonburkett3179 2 года назад
Yes. The river crossing and stevens canyon were the sketchiest parts. Flies only got us bad at klapatchee and past nickel creek to Indian bar. Indian bar and summer land were perfect ending.

Thanks for sharing about your awesome group trek. In my youth I worked on a Northwest Youth Corps trail crew digging much of the Wonderland Trail in Mount Rainier Park. It was hard work and a beautiful nature experience. I recommend it highly and also volcanic Mount Cameroon in Cameroon, Africa.

U-Haul aka Pah-Paw, definitely held his own out there. He was the perfect addition to our trail family. So many laughs and good memories!!! Poor guy had the most gear fails out of all us combined. You should ask him about his poor tent that kept shrinking during our trip. 😂

I am so excited to see each of your videos. I got out my map to see exactly where you were describing. We are going clockwise starting from Fryingpan creek. Our camp sites are Indian Bar, Maple Creek, Paradise River, Devil's Dream, Klapathcie Park, Golden Lakes, Mowich, Dick Creek And Graite Creek. Any tips, advice, suggestions???
@TheHungryHiker
@TheHungryHiker 2 года назад
Indian Bar and Klapatche Park were my top 2 favorite tent sites we stayed at along our trip. I highly recommend trying to score tent site #2 at Indian Bar for the best views, although it will still be a long climb up to the toilet. Definitely pay a visit to the group shelter and the group shelter toilet (it has a wonderful view!). Fill up water at Paradise River before getting to the Paradise River Camp. Everyone warned us about mosquitoes at Devil's Dream, but we came in at the beginning of a storm so there was a nice breeze to blow them out of there and they didn't bother us. Make the pit stop at Indian Henry's cabin. Take lunch up at Emerald Ridge. You might get a slight bit of cell service at Golden Lakes. I think Tentsite #3 has the best view though. Granite Creek had the best tasting water along the trail. If you can. try to swim in all the lakes along the way. St. Andrews, just before Klapatche Park for you was our most favorite lake. You'll also want to fill up on water there because Klapatche Park was a dry camp for us. Good news! All th bridges were in for us so I hope they are for you. Also, Mowich Lake was the noisiest, most crowded tentsite we stayed at along the trail. Not one of our faves. Have fun!!

Beautiful views! Holy hell the river crossing look sketch. Gonna try to get to them early as possible so the level isn’t so high. Also, would you say the trail is easy to navigate? Always heard it’s well maintained and I’ll have my compass and map just in case but curious if there are any spots I have to be more aware on. Will be my first solo trip so expecting to learn a lot about myself on the WT. What do you think of this itinerary if anything at all....TH:longmire, maple creek, Indian bar, white river backpacker camp, granite creek, Ipsut creek, So. Mowich, No. Puyallup, So. Puyallup. Obviously I’m going CCW lol
@TheHungryHiker
@TheHungryHiker 2 года назад
The only hairy part of that water crossing was at the very end where the water came up to the bridge. Just made us move faster when we crossed that part. The Wonderland was very easy to navigate. I used the Guthook app for most of the trip and the trail is very well marked. Lots of signage at most junctions. Indian Bar was one of my most favorite camps. The climb up from Carbon River to Ipsut Pass was brutal. We stayed on the Wonderland proper and didn’t do the Spray Park alternative. Granite Creek had some of the best drinking water on trail. All the bridges were in when we were out there. Have so much fun!!!
