Backpacking The Wonderland Trail | Mount Rainier 2021 | Mystic Camp to Mowich Lake - Day 2 // After packing up camp and making a brief stop at Mystic Lake on our way out of camp, we headed back out on trail for a full day of hiking, heading up towards Mowich Lake. Along the way, we’d see countless views of Mount Rainier thanks to the beautiful weather, made amends with the Dick Creek water crossing from last year, hoked alongside the Carbon Glacier and got an incredible foot soak in at lunch. Once we crossed the intense Carbon River bridge, we were treated with the most hellacious climb up to camp. It would be one of the hardest climbs we’d do on our entire trip. Once at Mowich Lake, our first food cache and another beautiful lake waited for us.
Total Mileage: 12.9 miles
Total Ascent: 3,595.8 feet
Total Descent: 4,208.3 feet

The day started off promising with our first stop at Mystic Lake in the morning, but none of us were prepared for how hellacious the climb up to Mowich Lake would be! For the rest of the trip, we could compare every climb up the trail to THIS ONE. I think the only thing that got me up there was knowing I had a can of rootbeer waiting for me in my food cache.

I hiked the Wonderland clockwise with my daughter in 2018. I remember going down Ipsut pass thinking that I didn't ever want to do the Wonderland counter-clockwise because of that climb and the heat that day... That's definitely a climb that will stick with you. Thanks for sharing the vid!

Thank you and great idea. This trip is now over and has already been filmed, but I'll keep this in mind for other future trip vlogs. The tent setup is pretty much the same for most tent sites so maybe I'll show my setup once per trip, just so you can see how I set up my tent and furnish my "house" on trail.

I was wondering why the tent sites seem so small. Most of my experience is in the Sierra and we are always spread out. Great trip so far.
@TheHungryHiker
@TheHungryHiker 2 года назад
I think Mount Rainier National Park is no where near as large as the Sierra, so there's much more room for hikers to spread out. For example, the JMT (in the Sierra) runs from Yosemite to Mt Whitney in 211 miles. The Wonderland Trail is only 93 miles. The smaller tentsites I'm sure are by design so that they don't take up too much extra space in the park. There's a lot of fragile land in and around Mount Rainier National Park. By keeping the tent sites small, it makes it so there's only so many people that can stay at them. This probably helps with crowd control and protecting natural, fragile resources. I liked that there weren't a whole lot of people out there. It made for a really enjoyable experience.

LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos and channel !!!!!!! - Did you by chance stop by "THE OTHER REFLECTION LAKE" just off the trail, located at the Moraine Park Pass Above Mystic Lake? Did you run into any bears along your hike? That hike up to Ipsut Pass is by far the most brutal - but then going down the other side is almost as bad - I wonder which is worse - LOL? - cheers
@TheHungryHiker
@TheHungryHiker 3 года назад
Thank you so much!! I don't believe we made the side trip to the "other" Reflection Lake. I didn't realize there was another one. On this day, we knew we had a pretty big day ahead of us so we stuck to the trail and tried to get the miles, water crossings and uphill climbs out of the way as fast as our legs would get us there. I'm right there with you - I don't know if going up or coming down would be worse for Ipsut Pass. That whole section was a beast!! We were all pretty beat by the time we got to Mowich Lake.

@TheHungryHiker
@TheHungryHiker 3 года назад
You're going to have an amazing time out there. There were so many beautiful views. It was hard to pick my favorite. For the meals I make myself for on trail, I store them in freezer Ziplock bags because I can use the same bag to cook my meals in. The cozy is clutch. I made that myself too!

Where did you get you cache container from before your trip and what did you do with it once you emptied it?
@TheHungryHiker
@TheHungryHiker Год назад
I used a paint bucket, which I purchased at a local hardware store. When I was done with it, I donated it to the park. Rangers always have good uses for these buckets and are more than happy to take them off of hikers hands when they're done with their food cache so the park doesn't have to buy them.
