Hey guys! It's late June 2021 and Tessa and I took a chunk of our vacation time to explore the Cabinet Mountains of Western Montana. In this video, we backpack into Leigh Lake - a beautiful alpine lake in the northern region of the mountain range. There are views in all directions with this one, and Snowshoe Peak (The largest peak in the Cabinets - 8,737 Feet High) absolutely towers over you and the lake when standing at its shores. It's a highly recommended trip from our experience, but you have to earn the views as it's quite a climb right out of the gate from the trailhead. It's a relatively short distance in, but steep steep steep. Enjoy fantastic views of Leigh Falls as seen in the video on the way up.
Here's our stats for the trip: 3.25 Miles Round Trip with a total moving time of 2:30:54 and a total vertical ascent of 1,135 Feet.

Black bean tacos for dinner while camping two in a tent is a bold meal choice. It's good to see you two were both still on speaking terms in the morning. The lake and scenery is really beautiful, I can see why it's such a popular day hike.

Yes.. I mean the tent nearly blew away but thankfully it was staked in enough. And for sure! The Cabinet Mountains are a beautiful little range. Thanks Dirk!

Great, great. That lake is in such a drastic bowl. I went in the same way as you, but I've been told that you can cross the creek at the falls and have an easier hike in from that point. Excellent sunrise footage!!! Wow!

A drastic bowl is a great description of it! The surrounding mountains are huge. And yes! When we day hiked into it a few years back we actually took that trail across the creek and didn't even realize that there was an alternate route.. So when we did this trip we were a little confused at one point on where to go. Thank you Darla! Hope you're having an excellent summer so far.

That looked like a spectacular hike in, and then, wow, Leigh Lake! The way the lake is nestled into those slanted mountain cliffs is so gorgeous. The reflections were so pretty. Good call not going into the ice caves...people have died in Alaska when the caves collapsed. The view was really nice, though. Even though it was hot, that water looked cold! You guys know how to eat well. Nice trip!

Yeah! It's a super scenic little trip and we were pretty thrilled to be able to do it again and see the lake and all its glory :) Yeah.. the risk vs. reward wasn't quite there with the ice caves, and that's definitely not how I want to be remembered. Aha, the water was so cold - but refreshing as ever. Thank you guys so much for watching the video, and for watching all the videos for that matter. The support is amazing, and appreciated! Can't wait to check out your latest video today. Thanks again!

Goats... LOL they are such terrible neighbors... Beautiful location! Are you using an anamorphic lens?
@DannyJSchaefer
@DannyJSchaefer 3 года назад
Those goats were the worst we've ever encountered. They would literally stand outside our tent and blow and snort at us, and then they proceeded to jump off rocks all night and run back and forth next to our tent! Aha and nope on the anamorphic.

Are there alpine larches there? Thinking about hiking it this fall
@DannyJSchaefer
@DannyJSchaefer 2 года назад
Hmm.. to be honest man I’m having a hard time recalling if there was or not, but I’m leaning to the side of not really. There’s bound to be some pretty Fall colors, but I don’t think you’ll get a bunch of changing colored Larch there.

Its really disrespectful you camped right on the lake when theres clearly marked signs at the trailhead not too, and the fact you posted this encouraging others to break USFS guidelines, what a joke lmao. places like this get shut down from these actions.
@DannyJSchaefer
@DannyJSchaefer 2 года назад
Yep we sure did. To be honest at the time of this trip I didn’t realize that we were breaking that rule. I had heard of it and knew it, but was naive to the fact that it applies everywhere. I’ve been made aware from others, and have since educated myself on the proper places to camp. Thanks for pointing this out.
