The Backstep technique for tig welding is a way to limit distortion on thin sheet metal.
Backstepping is when the direction of travel is in one direction but the overall progression is in the opposite direction.
All that said, its a great technique for thin sheet metal for limiting distortion.

Hi Jody. I didnt got to welding school but took up welding as a hobby. Everything I have learned I learned from watching your videos. I dont claim to be a welder, just a home shop Hack. Because of your teaching my welds hold well for the things I do. Thank you very much for doing this, you are truly a gift to us beginners.

The TIG class I took last semester focused solely on sheet metal, .045". It's a great way to learn heat control, especially if you aren't using a chill block. Going from that to more reasonable thicknesses (.08, .12) makes it feel like easy mode.

Before is generally to “feel” how much tungsten to work distance you have before you light up. After is as mentioned to post flow argon over the weld while it’s still hot and susceptible to oxidizing.

Hey Jody, I don’t want to sound like an expert here because I’m not, but you state “ .100” “ as “one thousands of an inch. If I’m not mistaken, what you meant to type was “ .001” “. I only feel like saying something because I got confused. Great video though! Thanks!

I shared my frustration with microscopic hand tremor that is not even visible in normal life with a couple zoologists who routinely attach pressure sensors to the feet of jumping spiders and do all sorts of incredibly fine mechanical work, and they asked me whether I had drunk any tea before the operation I nearly failed due to tremor. I drink tea almost continuously when I am awake, so that was the explanation. The fist rule of micro-manipulation I learned from my zoologist mates is no tea or coffee for at least 4 hours before starting any precision-critical work.

Hey Jodie I have watched a lot of your videos,. There is one I have been looking for but can not find. It was the one where you made a shutoff pedal. I think it was for scratch start/lift arc tig. Would you tell me which video that was. Have you had anyone ask about the Vulcan tig machines. There are not many reviews on those products. great video I am just getting started trying some tig welding.
@tunichtgut5285
@tunichtgut5285 3 года назад
I find TIG welding sheet metal not hard at all. It is not important to get a nice looking weld since you will grind it down anyway. You have to make sure that there is a tight and consistant gap, make a tack at least every inch and make sure that the panels are perfectly flush. And afterwards you have to eliminate the heat distortion with a hammer and dolly. That is the hard and very time consuming part. Welding is easy.

Absolutely dude! I went to a local tech school, but there was 50 years experience in the field between my two senior instructors. I learned Stick, MIG and TIG, all at night, and oxy cutting too...they tried to teach me plasma cutting, but I'm not sure I have the hand for that, lol! If you like to see that you did something with your day, welding school is worth the time spent!

John... I weld just about every type of metal out there except Magnesium, Don't have or want to invest in a Purple K to put it out if things go to #e!! which it can. As far as cutting, I would Never part with My HyperTherm 45 Plasma Cutter. Sever 1" steel with it, No problem. Punch a 1/32" or smaller hole in metal up to 1/2" also. Cutting stainless is a breeze and cuts aluminum like hot butter.

I know what I'm about to ask is a very heretical subject for argon suppliers so I'll keep the suppliers name out, but it's been eating me up something fierce. I just got another bottle of argon, but it was welding very reactive with some sparks flying on initial arc. The steel would behave as if it were aluminum without filler and just get all nasty as it would puddle. I don't know if I was given a co2 blend or what. It would have porosity issues when camping out to warm up the metal... Replaced my torch to a another tl210 with sfx hose, new regulator with low side to machine hose, and it would still leave some fine scale on the steel with that orange residual soot. That's all I've done with it and I'm at my ends with this bottle. The regulator is working really well, the torch is great, but the gas is different than anything I've ever seen before. Tried my #9 and the TL 210, both are producing that result. Also, when I opened the bottle... It blew it some oil! I mean it was a bit of it in there.

This video helped a lot today when I had to weld thin stainless. Which brings me to my next question. Could you make a video or article about welding fumes etc.? Do different metals give out different fumes and how they affect your body? I had not welded stainless for well over a year until today and I found it seemed to really irritate my throat and lungs.

Wow ok thanks. 2 questions, does the see-through cup help you to look at your arc through the cup? Reason I ask is I have smaller cup and have to tilt gun at work to be able to see arc and it looks like you are nearly verticle. Second question is how thick is your aluminum chill bar? Thanks for the rules and tips and demostrations.

Love all your videos, you should do one on thin SS sheetmetal, like .020. I've had a devil of a time trying to even get fusion tacks on it. Its not a big project but man its a lot more difficult than reg steel... I can weld razor blades FAR easier than SS. Not perfect by any means but at least its welded. Hi Jodi just want to know the difference between er70s2 and er70s 4 and 6. I'm told 6 flows out a bit better than 2 . Why I'm asking is I want a softer weld to hammer and dolley. Especially in tight spots. Thanks
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 2 года назад
i have never really tested this but I think it depends on several other factors like how much weld is deposited and work hardening. My gut is er70s2 is softest

If i try tig 1mm with 55 amps i will blow through almost instantly. I wind my tig down to 30 amps and still have blow out issues! I always thought it was 40 amps per mill of material? I dont have a pedal and its a cheap tig which no doubt contribute to that. I suspect my particular tig machines dial is inaccurate or does not work properly. As an example i can only just weld razor blades together. And only the thick side. Even then the moment i hit it boom blow out.
@AlkoHol62
@AlkoHol62 6 лет назад
I had the same problems, and found that if you have the pulse function on your machine, it keeps from putting too much heat in the metal (hopefully you have high freq. start). Also, the fancier machines have the ability to start and/or finish with a different (lower) amperage, or use the pedal to start with a lower amperage, so you won't burn thru. Try practicing on old muffler pipe or 1/16" panels, before you tackle the really thin (.043") panels. The second big thing i found that helps, is not dwelling at all -watch how fast Jody travels; it's to keep from blowing thru.He also has the Furrick cup and .o43" filler rod, E70 s-2. Finally, some folks just use "stitch" welds (esp. if all you have is a cheap MIG welder), every inch, then 1/2 inch, then quarter and so on. The last welding is to join all the stitch welds together at a lower amperage, then grind them down.

Can someone explain to me the physics behind this? Isn't the whole point of those chill plate backings to draw heat away from the weld? But you have to increase the Amperage when you use them, putting more heat into the weld. So what is the benefit and why? Thanks!
