Which backswing is best? On plane? Out to in? In to out? What about Hogan? Join me on this inquiry...

One of the best demonstrations of any golf concept in web history. 👏👏👏

I learned how to advance and go back a frame at a time using the '.' and ',' keys. Now I will be spending hours watching these three swings over and over again. This really is a great method for both pro level, but also for the accomplished am golfer.

Hi John. It is a pleasure listening to your perspective on the swing. I didn’t have the advantage of seeing footage of Hogan outside of stills and his books before RU-vid came out. I can’t tell you in a way that you would believe but I have studied the swing of Hogan from many angles for many years. One thing he does particularly with full hard shots in all his actions from the 40s - 60s was his pelvic extension that was very present by P6 ( the third parallel you describe). His left leg was almost straight with driver here and his hips were around 70 degrees open to the target. By P8, probably which you term the 4th parallel he faced the target with his upper and lower body. In what you teach there appears to be way more flexion and less rotation and you seem to teach movement that will take you from closed hips to wide open at the 4th parallel but clearly that isn’t where Hogan was from the 3rd and 4th parallels. Hogan himself told Vasquez he wanted his stomach facing the target at impact and even though he didn’t quite get there he got close. What say you on this matter?

All the angles and positions you mention need to be created by dynamic motion. Some people say open the hips, but I would argue this is not correct. The question is more this... do the hips move independently... or move by straightening the left knee from the bottom up? Or do the hips move open from the top down... meaning torso goes first, then pulls on the left hip joint to open. I believe the latter is the superior methodology. I say this because I can straighten my left knee quickly and my hip might not move at all... the knee is independent of the hip joint. But if I rotate my torso (upper body) it will run out of room at some point and start pulling on the left hip. I would argue that Hogan's hips were only open at impact because his torso was even more open and leading the way. There are many photos of Hogan at impact where he still has a lot of flexation in his left knee, yet he is hitting it hard. This would be more consistent with what I teach, and certainly more inline with George Knudson who was probably the closest to Hogan's action I have seen in the most critical elements and protocols.

@@lagpressure I agree with you here for sure. Thanks for commenting, some good stuff to digest and ponder. I definitely remember Venturi and Jackie Burke saying that the straightening of the left leg shouldn't be consciously be done and I agree. Hogan's torso seemed to open from top of swing down through impact to me. I always noticed that even from stills of his swing back in Golf Digest when he was compared to Nicklaus and Watson. Definitely lots to learn from watching Ben swing the club. Cheers!

@@jimmyvespegolf3834 Just remember, Hogan DID NOT open his shoulders up quickly from the top. VERY delayed, and this gets into a completely other topic, (the purpose of the lateral move and tripping the shaft/free ride down). His torso rotation was extremely strong and fast from P3 to P5... but not from P2 to P3. Delayed. This isn't angles and position stuff. These are rotary dynamics that are aggressive and start late. This ability to do this then allows for the prior mentioned things to happen. I think this is where most instructors are getting it wrong.

@@lagpressure I think I get what you are saying. In my own action I see a delay in the internal rotation of my right leg all the way to the second parallel. Then it just fires through past impact very quickly. I am always trying to fire them faster but it sounds like this delay and subsequent rapid unwinding is in fact desirable.

@@lagpressure thanks for the correspondence. Any Hogan discussions are greatly appreciated and cherished when it comes down to mechanics.

Hi John, I love your videos/ instruction. I noticed that at impact your lead leg doesn’t get to a straight position before impact or actually after impact so I’m curious about this as so much modern instruction is focused on clearing the hips early and posting on the forward leg , look forward to your thoughts / response Jim 👍🏻🙏🏻

Best if torso pulls on the left hip first.... then hip pulls against knee. This is what all the great strikers did. Straightening the left knee independently is fools gold. Knudson and Moe are texbook examples. You'll see this with Hogan also.... he's never locked up at impact.

Cool demonstration. I still for the life of me cannot stop the urge of straightening my arms out in line with the club at ball contact 😢 Can't get the concept of maintaining that angle between arms and shaft.

John,,,,,couple of observations,,,,,who goes out and picks up those balls,,,,&,,,,,,have the police ever come to your house wanting to know who is firing that deer rifle at those houses in the distance--,,,quite a reverberation across the valley with that 1 iron hitting that deck!

Actually, the goats should be in the canyon by the end of the week. They clean it out and I go down and pick up the balls.

John, what trigger do you use to start the swing? forward press, tapping the club, Moe Norman club behind ball about 6 inches, never ground the club?

No scuffs on the deck boards 😳 Ive watched some of your content, but Im not super familiar with your ideas... Do you try to twist the shaft to maintain loading of the club?
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 7 месяцев назад
Not sure exactly what you are referring to by "twisting the shaft".... it depends what you mean. Maintaining the load on the shaft through acceleration is key. That acceleration is created in several ways and several leveraging points.
@GarthOJ
@GarthOJ 7 месяцев назад
@@lagpressure the twisting sensation I'm referring to is like trying to go from an open face to a closed face. In my head, it seems like from a shallow position with enough applied force (or acceleration as you said) it would be impossible to actually snap hook it. 🤔
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 7 месяцев назад
@@GarthOJ I would focus much more on what is happening post impact than before. You should feel as if your torso and shoulders are closing the face... very minumal hand or arm manipulation.
