Great tutorial James! I’m glad you mentioned that you kind of like it with core blown out as I’ve always liked M42 with the core blown out myself, but I thought I was alone in that. This tutorial is so useful in many targets as well, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Joe! It's interesting how trends develop. A few years ago.. most M42 shots I'd seen being processed had bright cores. Then somewhere along the way it became popular to reveal the core. In these two versions.. I tried to strike a balance. Reminds me of green in SHO images. We went from lots of green.. to no green.. and now seeing some shots with a little bit a green left. :)
Great Tutorial James. I usually go with short expo. To avoid Trailing, Cuz That's What My Mount Does At The Moment. Short expo definitely helps a Lot, But so much Data To process Damm!!😄
@@avt_astro206 I shot the cats eye a couple of years ago.. it was a very challenging target..the core is so bright that even 60" with an O3 narrowband filter were blown out. I've thought about revisiting with lucky imaging techniques. Might be a good one for you.
Nice tutorial. I actually put off imaging M42 for a long time because of the whole HDR thing as I didn't know how to deal with the core so I agree, it's actually quite a challenging target to get right. My method so far has been to process the long and short exposures separately and blend in photoshop.. I haven't used HDR composition yet so must give it a try sometime.
That’s awesome James! I wish my M42 could look like that! I preferred the blue tinge one , on the right! I have one shot colour, I’ve found some old 10 sec subs from last year! I want to try your HDR method, not sure how to go about it with OSC, I know I will have to separate the channels, that will give me rgb, will I need a luminance layer? What’s the best way forward for me to try this? Thanks! Clear skies!
Thanks Simon! You don't have to split the RGB channels for this. Just make sure they are both registered to each other and that you've run dynamic background extraction on both. Keep them both linear (non stretched) and it should work out fine. Do what I did with my lum data.. just use your OSC data in its place :)
great video, 1 question, when you do HDRComposition, why you select TIFF, I was thinking I need to stack each series( 60 30 180 seconds etc) and select master file from each
Thanks! In this video I used DeepSkyStacker for stacking duties, and the output from DSS is TIFF files. Had I used PI to do the stacking, then you are correct.. I would have used the master lights.
@@DSOImager thank you for your fast response, love the channel, agg your stacked image it way better than my ( also stacked no processed), struggling to find you why, maybe this is a difference between MONO and COLOR ? I did not use any filter, ( i have traid ultra , pro ) but I decided no to use them and maybe this is the issue, or MONO is the way to go
@@tomtoka OSC can still do a great job, especially on a target like M42. I just shared a picture of M42 taken with my ASI 533MC on the community tab, check it out. Which camera are you using? Some camera's like the zwo asi533mc require a uv/ir cut filter. Others like the ZWO ASI2600MC do not (the uv/ir cust is included in the sensor cover).
@DSO Imager hello i used zwo 294 and 183mc (two different approaches) I did hdr from 5 10 30 60 and 180 seconds. Serious. I even used triad ultra quad filter. My colors are washed out and I have to heavy process it. So I am wondering if your image is so colorful because of mono camera with rgb filters? I can share my photo with you. If the osc is an issue I will go mono
@@tomtoka OSC can be just as colorful. You likely have something else going on and switching to mono may not help. I can look at your data. Upload the stacked file to google drive and send me the link.
Hi! thanks for the video. I tried to make my image HDR but the result is horrible. I have my Ha master of 300 seconds and another of 20 seconds. My camera is the same as yours: ASI294 MM Pro. The steps I do are: I apply DBE or GraXpert, star alignment and HDR Composition. The result is a horrible image ='( Do you have any idea what could be affecting me? The tool parameters are the default although I tried modifying them and it managed to correct the image but I lose the HDR since the Orion core is not corrected. I would appreciate any suggestions please. Thank you!
The 20" stack.. is the core not blown out? When you say the result is horrible.. how is it horrible? Without seeing the image I can't really diagnose. One option would be to not apply dbe/graxpert. Go with star alignment and then try hdr composition. You can then run dbe/graxpert afterwards.
