I made this a few years ago from an obsolete propane tank. The lining is refractory cement with perlite added for insulation. The burner is made from iron pipe using a reduction fitting as the venturi and a capped tee with a #60 hole drilled through the cap for the gas jet. It is quite efficient and compact for the job it does. Due to this portability it could easily be used in remote areas to melt precious metals for refinement, transport, assay and trade. I recently completed the Graphite Crucible project and posted a video how to make one. Later I finally decided to make a full how-to foundry tutorial using more advanced inswool as insulation. The lining is Harbison Walker KS4 which has stood the test of time and well worth the money. Tutorials showing how to make it are available at:

Good video. I have built 2 furnaces, one wood or charcoal powered and the other is propane powered. For my propane furnace, I used kaowool and brushed a hotface on that. Metalcasting is so fun. I haven't made anything except ingots from aluminum. I have melted lead and made sinkers but that is a different subject.

I've actually melted aluminum cans into ingots using only leaves and sticks from my lawn. Its amazing how hot things get using a leaf blower as the oxygen.This is pretty cool!

Some materials have a much higher fusion point that's all. The fusion point of water is 0°C, that of aluminium is around 660°C, iron is 1538°C, tungsten (used for the filament in light bulbs) is 3422°C and graphite (what this pot could be made of) is 3827°C. Note that if you heat them too much they might burn or suffer oxydation before they even melt. So the pot is either made of graphite or some ceramic or whatever that has a high resistance to heat.
@AflacMan13
@AflacMan13 11 лет назад
You know, you might be able to get a hotter burn temperature, if you add a blower into the back end of that burner tube, and point the end of the nozzle at a 45 degree angle in relation to the inside of the crucible hole, so as to get a counter-clockwise tornado like effect. This will serve to concentrate the heat along the crucible and decrease not only cook time, but also the amount of gas you need to perform a smelting.

A "caveman" version would be to use charcoal. What you do is buy some stump remover from home depot (potassium nitrate). Dissolve in water at a specific concentration, then soak the coal in it. Let dry. Stack the coal around the crucible then light it. Blast with air from a mattress inflater. Depending on the design, this can melt steel. If not, do a double soak with the stump remover... or pump in more air. Its all about the oxygen.

Hmm, I wonder if a larger metal tank on its side could not be used to run a multi furnace design. I am thinking maybe a 50 gallon oil drum cut like a BBQ grill would be, but lined with this ceramic stuff and a single burner tube running to 5 or 6 crucible slots. That way you could cook multiple types of metal at once or just constantly cook a bunch of different ingots, so that way you could produce your ingots faster without having to stop between each batch. Just a thought.
@Prophes0r
@Prophes0r 11 лет назад
Yeah I was tired and somehow missed that. The problem with cans is that the metal is so thin, it oxidizes from both sides as it melts. Years ago while I was still learning, I thought that higher heat always equaled better/faster melts so I was running a super lean flame. There was so much extra hot oxygen that I was losing about 35% of the cans to oxidation. I was also burning through my cast iron crucible which only lasted through 4 2 pound melts though...
@dragonwyck121
@dragonwyck121 12 лет назад
Opps pushed the wrong button . I've posted basic plans. using fire brick made the whole thing far less complicated to build. but I couldn't leave it at that. It had to have style so my wife wouldn't make me throw it out. The perlite works very good. Cans are a waste of time. I set a aluminum alloy wheel on top of my foundry and watch it get cut in half , then move it around collect the slag for remelting into ingots. A famcy medieval plate I'm casting. decorative foundry that won't anger wife

@lukadubak RLBOB 1 gave you good advise to remove the "useable" gas out of the gas cylinder, but after following his advise do the following. 1. Remove valve with appropriate wrench or tool. 2.Fill and rinse cylinder several times with water. Do this because even with the valve removed, the residue in the tank will be highly volitile.
@felsinferguson1125
@felsinferguson1125 Год назад
Simpler: After pulling the valve, drop a few good-sized (or as good sized as you can through the valve hole) hunks of it into the tank, then toss in a cup or so of water. The "looks-like-smoke"/fog rolling out shortly afterwards will tell you when it's full of CO2 gas, which will make it about as safe as it's possible to be when cutting on a tank that used to hold flammables. (I have yet to meet a fuel-gas that can burn without oxygen, and since CO2 is heavier than air, letting a few chunks of dry ice melt (Actually, sublimate, but we won't nitpick, will we?) inside the tank will fill it with CO2, driving out both any final traces of fuel gas, and any oxygen from the air - the water just makes it act like a "fog machine" to give you a visual indicator of when it ought to be safe to start doing sparky/flamey things to the tank without worrying about causing a KABOOMy thing to happen - trust me... KABOOMy things are BAD when they aren't meant to happen!)

I've always wanted to melt down my own aluminum cans for the ingots. I'm tired of paying my township to haul away my cans when THEY get paid twice for it. Once from the taxes and another for the aluminum they collect. As long as it doesn't cost more to do so. Why melt them down? Because I'd rather haul the reduced size ingots than the 20 garbage bags of cans to the recycling center. Plus metals will soon be a commodity for trade. Always helps to be able to condense the size of it!

@Prophes0r
@Prophes0r 11 лет назад
The answer is "You Don't". You lose a LARGE percentage of your melt to oxidation unless you are controlling the oxygen levels in your furnace. This is why it is better to run slightly rich even though it reduces your maximum temperature.

I am not sure of the profitability since it uses propane. No problem melting gold as far as the temp. The limit is the liner. KS4 is rated to 2,550F after that it turns to glass and starts running down the sides in brilliant orange streaks. Looks the color of brown beer bottle when cooled. Mizzou can run up to 3000F and might be a better option. Both sold by Harbinson Walker now called ANH Refractories.. Propane burner can ramp past both if you are not careful.

Necessary to remove friability of material and add durability. not sure of safety of ceramic particles floating around. respiratory hazard. Asbestos I understand seeing it under microscope.
